    interesting (this Ernst background).

penny-- I have been in Ballard over 10 years, Seattle over 20

GI - I have Acoustic Alchemy playing quite loud and that seems to be soothing my old boy. Good luck, I hope the pup does not suffer too much.

We took our dog to Gasworks to see the fireworks there -- less loud than staying at home, and I thought she'd do better if she saw all the people around with the noise. Maybe it makes more sense to a dog that way? Anyway I think it worked, except the one moment when someone set off a cherry bomb somewhere nearby. We had her totally surrounded so even that wasn't too bad. The Space Needle fireworks were less loud at Gasworks than the neighborhood ones are around my house.

I remember when the Ernst on 15th was built - and the old house on the far end of the lot that was a waterbed store. Ah, the 70s! I can't recall if that was a new Ernst, or moved from somewhere else. Anyone recall what was on the land before the Ernst? I know there was a second old house next to the waterbed store that was eventually torn down and the parking lot expanded, so the parking lot always had a strange little nook that didn't quite line up. "Ernst: We have a warehouse. We just don't make you shop in it!"

Limback's is near 24th & Market. While it's never been associated with Ernst that I know of, perhaps that's what OldGuy is thinking of?

I still miss the plumbing/electrical store on 15th where the Petco is.

I remember the pre-Scooter's Ballard Dairy or whatever it was called. More seating and bigger, cheaper burgers. My waistline is expanding just fine with the Scooter's size burgers, so the smaller size part is for the better. I worry that block will go the way of The Viking soon.

Based on the address in Walt's phone directory, the Ernst would have been in what is now Ballard Square (the BECU, etc). Interesting.

The Charlies on Seaview might not have had a lot of neighbors to disturb, but I believe it generated a lot of 911 calls.

Weird. Ballard Square was Penny's for a long time. When would it have been an Ernst? Certainly not after it was a Penny's. If it was before the Penny's that would have been very early, indeed. I suppose it could have been to the south where the pub and yoga studio are. To the north is the Kress building, which I assume would still have been a Kress store at that point.

That seems small for an Ernst, but there was an Ernst in downtown Seattle, too (6th & Pike, NW Corner, I believe), so they were on a smaller scale back in the day.

Charlies Resturaunt. it had an excellent Eggs Benidict. Used to go there for breakfast every weekend. Didn't know about that Ernst in the middle of Ballard. I wonder when they closed it? My guess is late 50's or early 60" in which case it would have ben easy for me to miss it.
GAM - the Petco location on 15th by Holman? Used to be a Tradewell there. I remember shopping at the Pennys there. No Ernst after Pennys left. I think it just divided up into the format you see now. Different businesses of course but the same idea.

My earliest recollections of Ballard are from the late 50's.... Ernst Hardware used to be where FedExOffice is now (17xx Market) until it moved to where Mars Hill is now (early 80's?) Before Ernst, there was a junk yard on that corner (south side of Leary, east of the bridge approach.) When Ernst moved from Market, it was replaced with a Sportswest store. Ernst, Sportswest, Pay 'n Save, Schuck's, Lamonts all belonged to the same family. Petco on Holman was an Albertsons, then a fabric store, then a Thurman Supply. Sears & Roebuck was on the NE corner of 22nd and Market. Wigwam was on the SW corner of 22nd and 56th (where Chase is now) until they built a new bldg and moved to where Joann Fabric is now. The QFC on 24th used to be an A&P.

I liked that Doc Freeman's moved into the old Ernst location for a while after getting run out of Fremont, but they didn't last long. Much better than West Marine.

I was sure this topic had come up before, so I googled it and it's kind of interesting that each thread was started in December. Maybe the holidays make people more nostalgic?

Yes you are correct, it was an Albertsons and not a Tradwell up there where Petco is. You know the names, Albertsons, Tradwell, they just sound so similar it's probably why I got them mixed up. I remember all the other renditions too.

bambooboy, here's a good account of what happened to Doc's, I was under the impression that they had been forced out of the Fremont location by high land values and gentrification, but this article makes it sound like the owners were trying to capitalize on the land deals.

Anyway, Doc's was a throwback to the old kind of parts stores (automotive and marine) that you just don't see much anymore. Thankfully SeaMar is still around.

Ernie - Ballard Hardware is still kind of like that. Used to buy parts at Doc's all the time when I was in the Marine trade.

Very interesting post about Doc Freeman's. You're right, not many stores like that around today, unfortunately.
