SAS may not be free, but they have lots and lots to choose from there. If you can't afford a token amount, you may have difficulty its food and necessary medical care. There's also PAWS on Roosevelt.

There is no free kitten. My two were 'free' but just getting them fixed was a few hundred dollars each. I think Nora was about $400.
In my case, I just knew people who had a litter of kittens to find homes for. One a coworker had rescued a litter of farm kittens, and the other was from my sister's cat's litter.

I volunteer at Seattle Humane & we have a promotion going on through tomorrow! Check it out!
    http://www.seattlehumane.org/explore/events/holiday#.UODUro45e20
AND...if you don't find the perfect match, fear not. There are often great promotions, particularly on cats one year or older!
    Good luck! MEW.

Free? Obviously someone has been caring for and feeding a kitten who needs a home. The thought that you would not want to offer money for them to continue tang in strays is indicative of someone who does not realize what they are doing.

Nora Bell, did you take your cat's to Swedish Medial center to get fixed? That's a really high fee to fix a cat. $50.00 or so is I think more typical.

I'm not a fan of this at all. Something doesn't sit right about someone looking for either free or cool. Especially when they don't bother to expand on what kind of cat they are looking for. A pet (whatever it is) is for life. How about if the free kitten doesn't turn out to be a 'cool' cat? What then? And...what is cool?

So what? Shame on you not getting your animal fixed in the first place. So do not lay that "oh poor me and the me cost I had to endure" crap for you over site. A cat is a cat. I am offering one a most awesome life. I refuse to pay a dime period.

Why do you refuse to pay? If it's an adult cat, it leaves you open to someone dumping their cat needing medical care that they refuse to pay for. If it's a kitten, that's fairly immediate vet care. How can someone know that you won't resell the cat to a lab or will get it medical care when kitty requires it?

I recommend that no one give any pet away for absolutely free. It is too likely to end up either some place you did not intend (a lab, another animal's dinner, etc) or to be given away, put down or dumped when it needs medical care. This may not be the case with Bitoa, but is a question that always comes up when "free" is specified. Asking just a small amount ($20, or a bit less for small furry) will help avoid the above problems.

It's also possible this is a troll though I like to think it's not. It does not appear Bitoa read the link that was helpfully posted.

Bitoa: We can be a reactive bunch sometimes. I do hope in reading the reasons why someone should not let their pet go for free, you can see why it is reasonable to offer someone a $20 for their cat or $10 for their kitten, assuming they haven't had their shots yet (perhaps a bit more if they have had shots, since it's a bunch you won't have to shell for).

I was serious when I asked you why you are morally against paying money for an animal. I am interested to know, and not just for an argument's sake (even if I do debate it). I bet there are others who feel as you do, and I'd like to know more.

My point exactly!! pennyhgir. I would not want one from you. I fear I would then have to deal with kitty post traumatic stress syndrome.

I could probably catch one of the 'outdoor' cats that regularly use my garden as a toilet.

however, I wouldn't give it up for free--you'd have to reimburse me for the peanut butter I use for bait.

Bitoa - with all due respect, really there is no such thing as a "free cat". The thing to do is to adopt one from a local shelter and pay for the spay/neuter, micro chip and license and support the movement to stop indiscriminate breeding of "domesticated" animals, PLEASE!

Bitoa - I think that the issue is really that we (and I am using the we assumptiously here) are thinking that if you don't want to pay (again in almost all likelyhood a token fee) for a cat, then you probably wouldn't want to pay for necessary vet care when required. A cat "is not" just a cat. It's a pet and like any pet demands a certian amount of responsibility.
If your statment was even close to true, it wouldn't have cause that much ire on the board here, think about it for a minute.

  20. I heartily agree with everyone here who, with good reasoning, chooses not to support you. Tis just isn't the way to bring someone into your family.

ttp://www.pet-abuse.com/pages/animal_adoption/free_pets.php is the link I think phoo was talking about

We are an animal lovin' group and animal lovers can be suspicious because there is so much bad going on out there.
People being misinformed and uneducated, people taking animals without a full lifetime commitment so that later yet another confused and scared animal ends up in a shelter or worse.
And then there are the very bad things that happen that are in the link above.

I'm sorry, I may be totally wrong, because I've never met you but someone saying they want a "cool" cat and will give them an "awesome" life and that a "cat is a cat" makes it sound like you aren't really thinking this out. Especially when you get angry.

My old dog had paralysis and while walking her someone stopped and scolded me for making my dog walk when she was in pain. I said she felt no pain in fact she felt nothing but when he apologized I thanked him for caring enough about a strange animal to be protective. As a fellow animal lover, be happy we care enough.

Please think about the next 19 or 20 years. If you can promise an animal that you will keep it for life and find a way to meet it's needs no matter what then I hope you find a wonderful cat to love.

Bambooboy, Family Vet. But female cats are more expensive, as its more invasive. Plus, they kept her a couple of days to monitor, as she had a previous heart problem.

    LIA - You rock.

Nora - didn't know they were that much. Boys are cheap. My last cat was a boy. I'm told I should et a girl cat so I might when I get another one. Not sure when that will be but I miss having one.

Oh yeah. The boy was cheaper by a long shot. He had no medical issues so just took him to the animal shelter to get chopped, and again its away less invasive procedure. But if you already have a fixed male a fixed female is the best fit. Fewer issues, in my experience.

As for the OP, he/she doesn't sound like he/she has the patience or temperament to care for a pet.

Frequently you can get it done cheaper through the animal shelter or some places will have "spay days" where there is a significant discount.

Nora, thank you, what a nice thing to say.
Bamboo, I'm so very sorry to hear it. Want one of mine? or two or... four? Oh crap, I was just ranting on about "lifetime commitment". I'm hosed. Guess I should just get about 20 more, paint my hair purple and watch the small neighborhood children cross the street and whisper when they pass my house.

Oh,yeah, thought about waiting for a 'spay day.' She's an all indoor cat, so no pregnancy risk in waiting. But she was so calm and relaxed with the vet at Family Vet that I decided to just let them do it.

There are cheaper ways to do it, but I stand by the statement that there is no such thing as a free kitten.

I do miss him. Problem is now I am traveling a bit and I can't do that and get a cat, or kitten without someone to watch him/her. Once I have them for a while I could leave but I would never just get a cat and then take off for a week, so I have to wait for a while

bambooboy - have you read the "Cat Who went to Paris" and his other books? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cat_Who_Went_to_Paris
I had a cat once that I took places with me and she was OK, we took a motor home trip to Yellowstone and let her out at night! In the park one morning there were three dead rodents at the door for us! Amazing cat and different times, this was in the late 70's, I doubt I would do that now, but cats are amazing in how they can adapt.

Ha! VB, I'm guessing that BB means traveling for work, now I'm picturing him feeding his cat scraps from the hotel's buffet after getting back to the room after a day of seminars or meetings......

Must have been a blast for your cat to try its hand at hunting in the wild, despite being squarely in the middle of the Yellowstone food chain!

    Posted 4 months ago #
  36. VB, in the 70s we used to take our cat camping with us every summer weekend. He would roam nearby all day, but we kept him in the tent at night.

HA! I thought I was the only one.
I had a cat that was really different than any cat I've had before or since and I used to take her everywhere too.
Id set her on the counter at the bank, she'd lay on my lap in the open kayak looking down at the water like a queen and I'd take her camping. There was this weird 15 minute time span at dusk where I had to keep her on a leash or she'd decide to be wild and run off but all the rest of the time she hung out in the camp. I miss her.
