Sure hope it's something like a chimney fire where the grease vents out and not structural. Really nice people in there.

I really like this place also--hope it's not too major.

certainly the 'asbestos-smoked' sockeye won't taste as good as alder.

A fire in a grease vent closed the Rickshaw for the better part of last year. A couple of months ago, an apartment burned right near Jensen's too. It's still boarded up. I give thanks to our local hillbilly fire dept for keeping the sirens quiet :) Either that or I've finally learned to sleep during the day.

teigyr -speaking of Rickshaw's. On my way home from seeing The Hobbit I was going down 105th towards Ballard. Saw that the Rickshaw was open (they had two fires last year) & thought I'd get a bite to eat. It had been years since I was in there & then only for a drink with a co-worker. I got the food to go, and when I went to eat it everything - and I do mean every food item tasted like old grease. It was all thrown in the garbage. What a waste of money. I'm still on the prowl for a good place in Ballard area for Asian food - Chinese.

gracie - if you find one, let me know. I do know one in Portland if you ever go down there. :)

phoo - I don't go to Portland (get lost every time I'm in that town with all those various ramps) but have a friend who goes there to shop all the time. Could tell her about it.
I did hear there was a good one at the edge of Belltown but unfortunately don't remember name.

Gracie, have you tried Greenwood Mandarin Restaurant on 73rd & Greenwood? We've had pretty good luck there. They share a parking lot with Ken's Market, so you'll usually get a place to park, too.

We're also fans of Jensen's, but don't go there often enough. Any updates?

gracie - I think it's called Om. It's over on 79th and Powell, right next to the Briar Inn. There's the seafood business (which was there first - Om seafood), then they decided to open a restaurant next door. You can get REALLY FRESH seafood there - as in, it's swimming in the tank. Not so much to end up on your plate, but for you to purchase. I never inquired quite how that works. At least you know the shrimp in their dishes is really fresh, because tomorrow's dinner is still looking at you. They even have live dungeoness crab. They are Cantonese and Mandarin. So much so that on the menu, the name of the dish is in english (if you pick up the english menu), but the description is not. I got quite a surprise when I ordered one dish!

It's actually pretty easy to get to right off the freeway.

Chef at Wok up at 125th & Greenwood ain't bad. I usually get it to go, for obvious reasons once you've been there.

In the tradition of Chinese vegetarian cuisine, we are pleased to offer tantalizing dishes whose origins go back thousands of years to China's early imperial dynasties. Before making his annual prayer for the kingdom's prosperity, the emperor was required to practice strict vegetarianism for seven weeks. The royal court's skilled chef created extraordinary vegetarian recipes, with the appearance, texture, and taste of the emperor's favorite meat, poultry, and seafood dishes.
We are pleased to offer you the same skilled techniques, exotic seasoning, and ingredients enjoyed by Chinese royalty. The Bamboo Garden shares the tradition of healthful delicacies with the finest and freshest ingredients. Our staff has recreated the authentic recipes and tastes that were once served exclusively at the royal court.

Thanks Chickster and Buffalo. Buffalo - I completely forgot about the Bamboo Garden. It is really good there.

Phoo - I mentioned this restaurant to her and she will probably check it out on her next shopping trip to Portland. Thanks!

At 12:04 p.m. on Wednesday January 2, 2013, the first 911 call came in reporting a fire at a 2-story business located at 10500 block of Greenwood Avenue North. Northgate Ladder Company 5 arrived first to find smoke coming from the rear of the structure. The firefighters quickly extinguished the flames in the outside generator. The flames traveled through the building’s ductwork. It took just over a half-an-hour to completely knock down the fire.

The damage was limited to the ductwork and the roof of the building. The damage estimate is $40,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents.

    There were no injuries.
