Trash along Ballard Ave and elsewhere

I've been walking by an overflowing trash receptacle at Ballard Ave and 22nd Ave for days now. Granted, New Years Eve probably contributed to the problem, but shouldn't the City (Seattle Public Utilities presumably) be on top of this? Does anyone know how often they maintain the receptacles? Also, does anyone know if there is a City department responsible for street cleaning along the street rights of way? It seems like littering and trash along streets is becoming worse and worse in Ballard. Whatever happened to community service requirements (litter cleanup)? Am I the only one that finds it unsightly and unsanitary to walk by trash everywhere...do others care here, or am I just cranky today? Basically, what's going on here?

Welcome to the New New Ballard. Trash is the norm. Bet you thought the nanny state at city hall would come and flush your toilet after they wipe yer littering as... never mind I should not say it... YOU A*S! Opps I said it, now all you libtards can point your finger at me while you sing Kum Bay Ya.

Please forgive me, I'm having Onederfullone withdrawl and needed a dose.

Just because there is a receptacle doesn't necessarily mean it will be emptied on a regular basis. My house was on a Metro bus stop until last year, there was a small trash can on the sign which wasn't emptied often enough. Constantly overflowing, I didn't always have room in my recycling/garbage to keep it under control, Metro finally removed it. People don't seem to care enough to take their garbage home.

Every weekend (i.e. Friday/Saturday nights) the visiting hordes of hipsters and wannabees fill the cans to overfulling. And (roughly) once a week they are emptied. With holidays last week and this week I think garbage collection is behind.

Last summer, I remember seeing a bunch of blue 'dog poo' bags on the ground around a metro bus shelter trash can. Wonder if the metro can emptiers got tired of a regular stream 'o poo bags in their cans... But, I guess this is a comment for another post!

I have been saying for years that we should have a deposit on all cans, bottles & plastic bottles. I believe this would eliminate a decent amount of garbage and would also act like a carrot for the bums to make some coin. They would actually have a goal to keep the neighborhood clean. It is a good thing ashtrays are not common in vehicles anymore since people would use parking lots to empty them.

better yet, a deposit on (full) poo bags.

you take them to where you buy your dogfood and they reimburse you say a buck a pound.

a small cottage industry could develop.

What about a deposit on grocery carts?

    Great idea, great idea.

Your idea solves the Honey Bucket in the park problem. Who's to say what kind of poo is actually in those bags? And who is going to check it?

    Just for everyone's reference...

Bus shelter trash cans (also graffiti, etc): 206-263-6369

    City trash/recycling receptacles: 206-615-1700

General garbage/litter not related to an overflowing garbage can would be considered illegal dumping—numbers and websites here.

BTW, the city's generic customer service line is 684-CITY. Probably a good number to have in your phone, right next to 684-ROAD, the pothole hotline.

    Absolutely, BuffaloHawk.

How about a deposit on grocery carts full of bags of indeterminate poo.

Careful though, most of them might be full of books.

MyBallard should have a knowledge base for all this useful information. I know I could look it up too but having the local Ballard numbers is useful.
