What did you make recently?

    The Kaffir Lime Leaves thread has devolved into a cooking thread, so I thought I'd move it here.

    Today I am making a version of moussaka and tomorrow I'll make a green pepper soup and a leek/parsnip/garbanzo bean soup.

    What are you cooking? It doesn't have to be anything fancy, sometimes the best food is simple food!

    A package of Ooey Gooey Chocolatey Chewy Brownie Mix just came out of the oven. It is from the Cravings Place company

    "Delicious All Natural Baking Mixes that are gluten free- wheat free -nut free -dairy free -egg free"

    I'll let you know if it's taste free.

    I'm eating the chocolate chunks separately. They're good. I don't like chunks in my brownies.

    I bought it by accident. I buy their pancake mix that is unsweetened so wasn't thinking and didn't read the ingredients like I usually do. It has beet sugar which I think is as refined as white sugar. I was going to sweeten it with a whole sugar like agave or honey which I seem to handle better. Anyway, it was already sweetened so there it sat in the cupboard. Humming. It won.

    What the hell, I'm still in holiday mode.
    Starting on Thanksgiving I go on a food free for all that goes until everything runs out about a week or so after New Years. I enjoy it thoroughly. Then I go back to my 90 percent health food normal eating. Which I also enjoy thoroughly until next Thanksgiving.

    It sounds like it has the potential for yumminess. I myself am in bed with the last few Godiva Chocolates from a gift basket I was given. Thank goodness I am running out of holiday treats.
    Tonight I made Eggplant Parmasean. I bake the eggplant instead of fry it and cut the cheese in half so it is a little better for me (I start from Martha Stewart's recipe and it is pretty good).

  5. I made a delicious stir fry of bok choy, peppers and onions in a garlic/soy/ginger syrup/Thai chili paste. Now enjoying a York peppermint pattie.

    Unfortunately, mine wasn't ooey or gooey and has a slightly weird taste but, hey, will I eat it?.... probably.

    A rear mudflap for my bike. I spent 2 hours looking on the Internet for the right sized "mudflap girl" emblem to put on it and didn't find one. I'm depressed. I may have to settle for reflective tape. Damn!

    Risotto - with pumpkin, sage, hazelnuts & pecorino romano cheese. Was good as Sunday dinner, but fabulous as lunch yesterday. I always make my own chicken stock. This weekend was the first time I used my new pressure cooker to make stock. Wow, just a half hour.

    Over the weekend, a thick, hearty wild rice and mushroom soup, and homemade bread to dunk in it. Had company pop in!

    And over the holidays....5 types of Cookies to deliver to our neighbors and friends, and Fruit Stolen, and a bunch of bread and side dishes for various gatherings.

    Next? Hopefully nothing more than canned soup! I am ready for a break from the kitchen for a bit!! <grin>

    Lasagne with spinach -- it was good, but due to my inability to operate a simple oven timer it was a little overcooked. Aren't the TV cooks always talking up "carmelization?"

    More recently, miso soup with udon which came out great. I'm now out of yellow miso. It was Westbrae Natural brand. Anyone want to recommend a good replacement? It was good, but there are so many I'm thinking I should try something different.

    I occasionally use my smoke detector as a kitchen timer! "Caramelized" doesn't sound too bad in comparison!!! <grin>

    Ha, the smoke alarm comment makes me laugh. My mother moved in with me when she was ill. When I would get home from work she would say "So, what are you broiling for dinner tonight?" then later, when inevitably the smoke alarm went off - she would say very sweetly "Oh good, dinner is ready"

    I'm making Momofuku's recipe for bo ssam, slow-roasted pork wrapped in lettuce leaves, for friends this weekend. I'll make rice, sauces and a few side dishes (banchan) to go with it. I'm looking forward to a rainy Saturday dinner party!

    LIA - it was the same way with my sister-in-law - God bless her soul. When the smoke alarm went off we'dall yell "Dinner is ready" just like you. I even found an opron and napkins for her with that on them.
    And what have I made recently = sad to say the only thing I've made, as far as food, is reservations at various restaurants. Haven't been in the cooking mood..and when I am it's stuff I shouldn't be eating.

    I am no miso afficiando, but I am enjoying this Kyo Kaiseki miso with dashi stock. My friend says the better miso always has dashi stock in it. It was $6 for a 23oz tub. That's alot of breakfasts. I've not yet made soup with it, but in Ballard Market I stumbled across pork bones for .99 a pound so that's the base for the two soups I am making today.
    So many yummy sounding dishes! Even the well carmelized lasagne!

    Gracie - speaking of things you shouldn't be eating.... deep fried oreos!

    phoo - you are bad! Actually I've never had them. Only "dessert" deep fried was long time ago - fried ice cream. It was beyond good. All the dishes mentioned here sound so, so good. You are all great cooks.

    Every year for New Years Day we host an open house for friends and serve chili. I make a big pot of chili con carne and my partner makes a vegetarian chili. Both get great reviews...we just combine the leftovers as we have very few food prohibitions. With this we usually offer corn bread and rice...I never had rice with chili until we combined forces. Apparently it's a Hawaiian thing!

  20. Everyone who has ever served me chili has prepared rice with it (east coast). Certainly not just a Hawaiian thing. I prefer to serve it with conchiglie pasta because it gets captured in the pocket which is delicious. Corn bread is a must also.

    gracie - I do like to be a corrupting influence on others. I have always wanted to try fried icecream but unfortunately will never get to try the original product now. The cookies are very straight forward. Just dip them in a batter and they come up nicely soft inside but not soggy. Imagine that cream all nice, warm and mooshy. I really never ate them beyond a taste, but made them twice for someone I lived with who LOVED them.

    It certainly would be interesting if we combined our forces. We could probably feed half of ballard if everyone donated spare ingredients in their fridge and we all got our heads together over what we could make out of them. Challenges are so much fun! We could have a helluva Ballard dinner if we found a big enough hall and kitchen.

    Did I mention I have a bag of french fries just waiting for me to go on a "bad food" binge which may never happen? Oh, I also always wanted to try a deep fried twinkie, but I never got around to it. :/

    Homemade roasted butternut squash and veggie soup. I make it constantly and my daughter and I devour it! Husband won't go near it (which makes me happy because if he knew how amazing it really is I would have to make it even more often than I already do)!

    Smartsy, interesting that it's an east coast thing too...I never knew. I do remember a place when I was a teenager than sold chili over spaghetti noodles, they claimed it was some Chicago style thing, and I LOVED it! But then, that was 30some years ago...I'd try it again tho!

    I think chili should only have beans and veggies in it (and maybe meat).

    once you add rice it's really more of a goulash.

    I got japanese eggplant for 1.39/lb at HT Mart! I forsee a helluva stirfry in my future.

    BnP: I also got a butternut squash, but I'm thinking more roasting slices with the foreman grill my friend gave me and eating it with something else.

    Also HT Mart I could not resist buying these coconut macaroons. I only wanted two, but they come in a big container? Anyone want a macaroon? ;) If someone wanted to play games thurs/fri/sat you could get free macaroons. I'll probably stick them in my growingly full freezer and try to forget about them for awhile.

    BTW, I made a leek, garbanzo bean and parsnip bisque. It came out TERRIBLE. Do not make a bisque with garbanzo beans! These are the adventures I thrive on though. It did in fact come out OK, but started awful. I had to use red curry to compensate along with other stuff.

    However, my "stuffed green pepper" soup came out great, though it turned out to be a HUGE batch. Like, I froze several containers and I could still eat it all week.

  29. Cinnamon rolls! Well that is very interesting.

    as for the rice, did I misunderstand? I know chili served OVER rice, not rice mixed in it (same for the conchigili).

    Years ago a group of us decided to go bowling late afternoon on Sundays, then take turns hosting dinner. Dinner had to be chili. It was a lot of fun sampling the many chili recipes and accompaniments. It was a fun winter!

    I did mean rice on the side or with chili over it. It's okay by me, but if it (the rice) weren't there, I wouldn't miss it.

    All I did was make the stove work by replacing a bad burner switch. Why is it that appliance parts stores are only open M-F 9-5? Couldn't they throw the DIY-er a Saturday noon-5 bone?

    Yesterday I made a vegan pho stock and made a bowl of pho with fake meat and veggies, turned out about as good as Pho Tran on the Ave, one of my favorite pho joints.
    Last week I blew a glass bowl down at http://www.seattleglassblowing.com/ My daughter, who was in town for the hols, and I took a glass blowing class there. Lots of fun and the bowl turned out quite nice, I almost used mine for my pho!

    Curtis.. I always heard that chili with spaghetti noodles is associated with Cincinnati, OH like chicken wings are to Buffalo, NY. I also grew up with chili, rice & shredded cheddar cheese served together with Italian bread for dipping.

    BH, yes I saw that once when I was passing through the cincinnati airport. I'd try it, but I can't help but think of it as kinda wrong. Not super wrong, just really odd. Outright wrong is what a fellow I knew did to his "spaghetti": curry, refried beans and any old veg (including zucchini and broccoli).

    I just took about 1/3 cup Nancy's low fat yogurt, put it in a big rocks glass, cut a big slab off the fresh pineapple I bought earlier at the farmer's market in Lahaina, chopped it up into small pieces and filled up the rest of the glass. Sprinkled a small handful of mixed nuts and berries over the top. Popped a Kona Fire Rock pale ale to wash it down with, and now lunch is in the record books.

    phoo - it was a lot of fun and very interesting. The bowls are thick because what we did was blow a big bubble and then flatten the end and then suck so that it ends up with the flattened end being inverted making a double walled bowl. Quite ingenious! And those furnaces are hot!
    I would do it again and might take a series of classes, maybe.

    Bamboo Boy,
    I cut up a 2 liter soda bottle for a buddy fender extension. Once you cut the shape you can pop rivet (3 pls) right to your existing fender.
    Bonus is you have enough material for at least 2.

    The last thing I made was Panko and herb crusted lingcod. I really liked the way it turned out with frying until the first side is browned, flip and throw in a 400 deg oven until finished.
