    Marketing meets a sell.

    101.

Predict yet another thread stating the obvious.

It is a cult, which, by definition means lots of folks are in lockstep.

I believe I saw someone mention how a pretty co-worker was a follower. Some folks can't see ugly, even when it slaps them. Even if they are pretty.

I know a lot of pretty liberals, go figure...

I mentioned a former coworker who goes there. I don't recall mentioning that she was pretty (though she is), just that she was a very sweet, kind person who was lovely to work with and never said a bad word about anyone. I was shocked to learn that she goes to Mars Hill.

I think more an advertiser than sponsor - I've seen other ads in that spot. This one seems to have been there for quite a while though.

Advertiser, sponsor - what's the difference?

Quite honestly, if this was my website I would refuse advertising from them.

My guess is the owners will take advertising dollars no matter who it's from and if there were to be any type of discrimination, Mars Hill has a strong legal team.

yet, you comment on the very thread about this church, thus generating them more money in the process.

would you really not run their ads compass rose?

I found it odd the other day that ESPN was advertising on Myballard. not that I hold anything against them (other than their poor coverage of hockey of course).
I just wonder what the threshold would truly be for most to refuse money from a potential (and influential) advertiser in the community.

    GI...

Religion is a tricky subject though. Taking advertising almost means that you agree with it. It would be like advertising an abortion provider or free birth control. You are bound to put some people off.

Hockey, on the other hand, doesn't draw so much ire, no matter how off-putting it is to some people.

There have been other churches that advertise here. I'm not extolling the virtues of Mars Hill, I don't like them one little bit but I don't think you can include some but not others. Heck, for all we know the Swedes are members of Mars Hill. I'd imagine a few people here are though I doubt if they'd admit it.

BH, not quite their demographic but if they were to want to pay for it, I'm sure we'd see ads.

Wasn't there a Mars Hill guy on here at one point who was defending them? Also (and I could be wrong) wasn't it Mars Hill that was offering free yard work and stuff by their parishioners? It wouldn't surprise me at all if this forum had a few of their people watching the topics.

Yes and yes. Someone (that we discovered was a Pastor) was on here defending them. He lasted about 2 hours. I think that Mars Hill are probably all over this forum. Not literally, but watching it.

Thinking about it, we haven't had a good Driscoll bash recently :-)

True except for it just brings more publicity. The little weasel seems to thrive on negative publicity and his membership (and real estate) seems to be growing.

Mars Hill: if Jesus was alive today he'd be a hard-rockin' MMA champ whose always available for (some kinds of) sex (house)wife wouldn't think of letting herself go (or else he could go gay).

So f-ing boring being an atheist - why didn't I sign up for the comic book ontology? ...

GI, how exactly do you think that me commenting on this thread would directly generate money for them? I'd be on the forum regardless; it's not like my commenting here increases readership, and I'm certainly not clicking on their ad.

Yes, I would really not run their ads. I wouldn't run a KKK ad either. I'm no ethical purist, but there's a line for me.

Teigyr, why couldn't the owners accept some ads and not others?

CR, maybe they can choose whose ads they run but imagine if they refused to run an ad for a Muslim company or a gay owned company, etc. Again I'm very clear on the fact I don't like Mars Hill but to discriminate against them is the same thing as discriminating against other groups and I feel it's wrong. I don't know what the law says on it but my guess is if a company refused to work with a certain group due to their religious affiliation/beliefs, that could open a whole shiatstorm of potential lawsuits.

(added to say it increases revenue for them because the more "views" the site has, the more they can charge in advertising. Every one of us here is responsible for it.)

It was the new "Ballard Church" that was doing the help your neighbor yard work thing. They were supposedly on the Suede's walking route and so got a whole bunch of free publicity. There was also some talk that Ballard Church was really just a mini Mars Hill.

The fellow who was a Mars Hill pastor was defending some 'meet your neighbor' campaign they were having, I think.

    Here it is...

I think MyBallard can refuse any advertisers then want based on the first ammendment:

"(blogs) & newspapers do have a First Amendment right to refuse letters to the editor and ads. Since they are privately owned entities whose editors have editorial control, they are free to promote whatever political, social or economic view they wish."

compass, I was trying to get the point across that teigyr made. each of our clicks on this site generates income (for the site anyway). maybe the church doesn't see dollars from this, but bumping the thread gives them more publicity.

GI, yes, bumping the thread gives them more publicity, but what advertisers are more concerned about are a website's overall page views and unique visitors. The posters on the forum are coming to the forum anyway. Plus, I don't even know if forum traffic is measured as part of a site's metrics, since it's typically the same 20 or so people posting in a forum - not big numbers anyway.

According to the fine print metrics below, there are 34,211 members of the forum. Over the last 57 months, there have been posts by 3914 members.

So yeah, I think we are helping them to make money by the ads.

Interesting, PL. I hadn't noticed the numbers. I'm surprised by the 3914. That's a lot higher than I would have thought. I wonder how many of those are regular readers versus temporary posters/trolls. Interesting.

I often read the forum and don't think about logging in. I forget when I am logged in as I close my browsers alot. So, I don't think the number of members online is quite accurate. Perhaps it should read "12 of them are members who have decided to login."

I found it odd the other day that ESPN was advertising on Myballard

The bottom ad on the right is an "AdChoices" ad meaning it is going to target advertising to the topic or (I think maybe) the user's interests. Maybe the ESPN ad followed GI here from his fantasy league?

I only noticed this because it was an ad for Angry Birds on the Angry Birds thread.
