July. August. Long days, perfect temperatures, and no humidity.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Oh, that's right. Those three weeks of sun and greenery.
Another possibility: masochism.

It helps save money this time of you since it isn't motivating to go out and spend as much. Then well the weather is nice you have the extra money to go out and enjoy it to the fullest. I love Festival Season and usual kick it off with the Folk Life Festival.

That's true, BH. While this weather could drive me to drink, I'm not motivated enough to actually go out to a bar when it's like this.
The flip side of that is that I work from home and can turn all Jack Torrance if I don't force myself to go out every day or so.
Posted 5 months ago # -
If you want to I will let you hang out in my chameleon cage a few hours a day to hang out under his light;)
Posted 5 months ago # -
No, we have greenery all year long - another plus. And it is at least 6-8 weeks of sun.
Think of this as the cozy time of year. Maybe a nice bowl of pho and a good book (and BH's lizard light) are what you need.

I'll add September & early October to Plantlover's list. Also, fabulous mountain views and hills. It's not too far of a drive to warm, hot places east of the mountains. And since it doesn't snow often, a real snowfall means no school for the little kids, no work for the big kids and the city turns into a giant off-leash area for dogs.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I have been having a hard time seeing the mountains through all this gray outside;)

Even in all this murk, you can catch a glimpse of the Olympics many days. Just a glimpse, not a gorgeous south to north full-on view, but enough to sustain hope. One of my friends moved here in the winter and it was typical rain/clouds for several months after his arrival. He went to Southcenter for something and when he came out of the mall, the clouds had parted and he had his first view of Mt.Rainier. He said he was stunned, he had no idea how huge it was IRL. That reminds me of another reason to like it here - seeing sun and moon rises & sets over mountains.

PL, I get into the "cozy" mindset in November. By January I'm starting to go a little insane. It's the greyness that gets me. I'd take sunny and minus 10 over this dreariness any day.

I love love love this weather... the cloudier and rainy-er the better, for me and my moss. Prob helps that I grew up here. Give me record rains any day over the nasty dry spell we had last summer. Just think about how beautiful the colors gray and green are! And the air is so darn fresh, I have to open a window for a bit even if it wastes house heat.

Oops! So enthusiastic I double posted

In the past I have likened Seattle to that bad boy/girl (your choice!) friend...for what seems like forever, moody and dark, cool and punishing, just generally in what appears to be a shitty mood, but then there's that beautiful day and everything is forgiven! OH! I love you! You're beautiful! I'll never leave you!
I did leave some years ago. I think it was 1999...it was that winter that we had something like 90 days of rain...continuous. Sold the house, sold most of the contents, quit my job and moved to Palm Springs! I LOVED it for almost 4 years. Well, here I am again...I finally figured out that there are those of us that need cloud cover, rain and as Treehugger mentioned moss!
I DO get weary of the grey right around January/February, but I know I can wait it out; after all, Seattle is my main squeeze!Posted 5 months ago # -
+ 2 treehugger.
this weather is the best!
I love how I can go out for a stroll or run and see very few people.
the darkness is daunting, but then I see my horseradish is coming up.

GI, the other crazy runners or cyclists I see out there are fun! There's a bond when the weather is crappy unlike with those fair weather runners/cyclists. Actually I haven't minded the weather so far, am about 4 years treadmill free and don't regret it at all!
Posted 5 months ago # -
I love it. I can't imagine living anywhere where the weather is the same all year round. While we're all indoors things are coming to life outside without our help. All of a sudden we will get those fabulous sunny (but cold) days in February and everyone will be out there in wellies tending to the yard.
I opened the back door earlier and looked at the rain for a few minutes. It was so peaceful in a weird way. Now I am waiting for snow!
Posted 5 months ago # -
as long as you're dressed appropriately, it's all good.
I think it was a cub snout leader or such that told me long ago, "there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad choices of what to wear."
in fact, the crappier the weather, the more I enjoy it (negative ions & all).
Posted 5 months ago # -
It hasn't been that cold though, not really.
Posted 5 months ago # -
wait until tomorrow night & friday!
looks like it'll be hovering around freezing (but a nice, clear day on friday).
Posted 5 months ago # -
I am predicting a little bit of snow in Hillbilly land.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I have the little one this weekend and hoping snow closes 65th between 3rd & Phinney for sledding
Posted 5 months ago # -
I just hope there's enough that the hounds can bring snowballs in on their coat. That would be an inch or two :-)
Posted 5 months ago # -
I feel like our chance of lowland snow will be far-and-few this year.
they say the snow level is ~300' and I believe I am about ~150' above sea-level in ballardland.
Posted 5 months ago # -
GI and Teigyr and Penny...I agree with you fellow crazy runners and cyclists! i dont mind the dark and rain so long as I get out in it every day. Its when I don't get out in it that I start to feel it. The commute to the office and back every day no matter what the weather is good. And like you Penny, I love the variation here! As much as I loved HI, the weather, even at 4,000, was too static for my long term tastes. 12 years of that was plenty.
Cheers all!!!

6-8 weeks of sun?
Not in the last couple of years.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Were you somewhere else this summer racerX?
Posted 5 months ago # -
haha...yeah! Wasn't it something like 85 days?
Posted 5 months ago # -
Really? Not even a sarcastic mention of legal weed yet? I'm turning my basement into a Bed & Bakefest.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I spent a couple years in Bend OR, sunny dry and hot all summer, sunny dry and cold all winter. Drove me crazy after a while. Occasionally I'd go over to Eugene or Corvallis and throw myself down and roll around in the wet grass like a dog.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I like this weather. I love being in bed at night and hearing the rain. I like puddles. I read and weave more in the dark time of the year. And we have passed the corner, each day is just a little bit longer.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Darn, I had hoped to walk LB in the snow. I hope we get some this winter.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I have to side with the weather lovers, even though I am a total weenie about going out in the rain on foot, especially if there is a wet dog to be toweled off after AND it is windy. But moist and moody grey sky is beautiful, and the occasional slant of sunshine to set it off is a lovely bonus. Not to mention the sound of the rain on the roof.
The long dark kind of gets to me some winters, but this one was OK for some reason.
I enjoy a snowy day, but would not like winters that have many days in the teens. Now, talk to me during one of our summers that never quite shows up and I might sing a different tune. I like to have a spate of days warm enough to go swimming.
Posted 5 months ago # -
You have 6-8 weeks of sun in summer, the week of clear cold weather in late January/early February, and the middle two weeks of May before Junuary sets in. There's usually some nice days in April as well. Plus, no major accumulations of snow, no humidity, no hurricanes, little ridiculous heat (and dry when it is hot). I guess I'm a weather lover, then.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I live here for the beer.
I don't mind the weather though. It can hamper my running, not always, but I don't mind it during the week. During the weekend..... I want snow or sun.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Well, you all managed to get me out of my weather funk. Thanks!
Mr. Rose and I used to go running at 5:30 a.m. and I liked running in the dark and getting back just as the sun was coming up. Going out and embracing the dark weather made it a lot better. Now that I work from home, I've gotten too spoiled to get up that early.
And Penny's right - there's usually that one sunny, warm weekend in February that makes you feel like spring is just around the corner.
I do love the changing colors of the sky and water here, especially when I'm out on the water. And the change of seasons. I'd never want to live somewhere like Hawaii.

It just started snowing here at the office in Lynn-Hood:)
Posted 5 months ago # -
Buff - snowing hard or just spitting stuff?
Posted 5 months ago # -
Buff - I think you live close to where I grew up. I lived on Sycamore (two blocks up from 3rd) Every year it snowed 65th was closed and we'd be out there sledding for hours. We'd have a lookout on 3rd for any cars. We also made "ski jumps" and would go over that in tobaggons and some on skis. First time I tried it on skis ended up with my ankle facing one way & my leg the other. Great fun.

It was pretty puffy with no stick but over now. I can't wait to check out Seattle Snow Day on Saturday. It look like a great time.
After a series of hilarious phone calls, we’ve finally figured out how to transport 162,000 lbs. of snow from the mountain passes into Seattle Center. Local organizations will use the snow to build forts and castles in an epic competition against snow kings and queens.

That is so cool, BH! This is the first time I've heard of it. Seriously cool. And it's sold out. What an awesome idea for a fundraiser.

Ooh! A few snowflakes up in Hillbilly land this morning!
Posted 5 months ago # -
So many that the FAA grounded all brooms today?
Posted 5 months ago # -
Yes. And the daily shipment of boxed wine to the Hillbilly QFC was cancelled.

I drove to Anacortes and back this morning and just got back. There was snow falling on the hills between Lynwood and Everett and between Marysville and Mt. Vernon, but it wasn't sticking. It has been a pretty consistent 36 degrees. Interestingly, it was warmer by a whole two degrees in Hillbilly land and going North on 3rd than it was in lower West Ballard this morning.
For the record, I like snow, and I like sun. I spent 3 hours yesterday on a roof top on Mercer Island with a fantastic view of the lake Washington and terrific vistas of dark belching clouds and fog banks interwtining against the slate grey sky and it didn't make me feel any better about being soaked to the bone through my 'rain proof' clothing and boots.

I'm in the pro rain camp. Always liked the sound, and the sight of the unprepared diving between dripping awnings.
But the idea of snow in Seattle drives an ice pick through my heart. If it sticks we either have icy slush, ice, or both.Posted 5 months ago # -
If I don't have to drive to work I would much rather prefer snow over rain. When I first moved out here and saw people freaking when it snowed I thought they where over reacting. I soon realized with a hilly landscape as opposed to flat land condition are night and day.I also like that when it does snow the neighborhood still has a lot of places to go within walking distance.

I love snow too, though it can be an obstacle to bicycle commuting. From Shilshole Marina to downtown wasnt bad with snow, but I think from West Seattle to downtown is gonna be a bit beyond what my life insurance policy will support.
I loved the winters at Crater Lake. X country skiing out your second floor door! Skiing around the lake in the moonlight or through the trees by headlamp. Sledding down the road from the rim after it had been plowed and closed for the night! Magical place to live. Oh yeah. And the endless rounds of shovelling. Oh well. Guess I kinda forgot that part. <sheepish grin>

Compass - funny you mention Hawaii. When I worked tech support, I got calls from all over the US. The people from Hawaii complained the most about their weather (too nice).
I really like the fog. We are close enough to the water, so we get really socked in. This was a big plus for me when we came here from the midwest.
Posted 5 months ago # -
I'm on Maui right now. No complaints from me.
Posted 5 months ago # -
That's funny, jburgh. I suppose people will complain about the weather no matter where they live.
I have friends who moved from San Diego to Seattle because they hated the weather there. They like having four seasons, as do I.
I'm guessing you don't miss the cold of the midwest. Was it humid where you lived?
I like fog unless I'm out sailing. Then it's just terrifying.
Posted 5 months ago # -
People complain about their weather no matter where they choose to live. Weather reporters make a big deal about weather no matter where they are. In VT it was the snow, here the rain, southerners about the heat, and I am surprised to learn that in Hawaii it is the nice weather!! ain't we a peculiar species!!

"I have friends who moved from San Diego to Seattle because they hated the weather there. They like having four seasons, as do I."
If they wanted four seasons, why the hell did they move here??? LOL! That is some funny ass shit right there. :p

Friday morning - full on view of snow-covered Olympics as the sunrises. Worth the wait.

My cousin has been working Crater Lake trail crew the last two years.I tried to make it out there during the summer but had other things come up. I want to check it out this summer and he said it is gorgeous. I miss him working Mt Rainier because it was an easy road trip due to location. I love going to the parks and getting away from reality, traffic & electronic devices for a weekend:)
CR
I remember when Eli Manning refused to play for the Chargers if they drafted him. My mother was like how could a young kid with millions not want to live in San Diego.
I remember a comedian saying that when the news starts out with crimes no one flinches but if the weatherman calls for bad condition people want to kill him.

I get worried whenever we lose our protective cloud cover and dread what may become of us if it persists, but it always comes back.
Since September, I've only used 60% of my five gallon bucket of SPF 3000.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Every place has its "seasons"...my inlaws living in Honolulu always are so concerned that we only come visit in the winter! I've tried telling them over and again that their winter is usually better than our summer!
Posted 5 months ago # -
Curtis, have them visit you in early June sometime, when it is still raining like crazy. That will cure any issues they have about "winter."
Posted 5 months ago # -
Today was gorgeous. It was my blue sky February weekend on a Friday in January.
Posted 5 months ago # -
pg - you are right, today was a beautiful day. I walked the pooch down to the Ship Canal and saw an eagle, lots of feeding sea lions and a harbor seal plus many assorted ducks and other feathered friends. And the magnificent Olympic mountains covered in snow.
