Happened on story over on KOMO this morning re: a recent rash of smash/grab thefts around 80th and 24th - all caught on video - the one that really got me was a Real Estate agent having all 4 of his wheels taken off his car....really? the wheels? I know they are expensive but that seems a wee bit extreme to me

    Story here Ballard thefts

We have mentioned it before on here and I realize it has been done in other parts of the city. They police department needs to set up a pawn shop to lure the thieves. They also might want to go in and audit some of the existing pawn shops inventory and hold the owners accountable also.

As part of our block watch, we check this web site for information: http://web6.seattle.gov/mnm/policereports.aspx

You'd be surprised to see what's going on around the corner.

Don't be surprised by the wheel theft. This was common when I lived back in the snow belt. After a blizzard, thieves would strip vehicles at night. They quickly put the vehicle on blocks and removed the wheels. They sold the snow tires almost as quickly.

Here locally, vehicles with tire air pressure sensors and/or expensive tires are up for grabs. My neighbors (80th and 8th)lost all four a year or so ago. Later that summer we found several of their lug nuts when weeding out flower beds. I was surpised the thieves bothered to throw them away, rather than just dropping them on the ground.

there's another wheel theft on the home page:

    http://www.myballard.com/2013/01/11/thief-makes-off-with-car-tires-while-residents-at-home/

it looks like the car was parked on the driveway. I can't believe there would be such brazen thefts where not one neighbor would've seen this happening.

by the time the thief drags a few blocks over, then removes all the lug-nuts, it's got to take what, 5 minutes?

Bizarre - kinda wishing we hadn't just gotten new tires on one of our cars ;o) - the store mentioned they've been having problems with people using stolen credit cards to buy tires - guess this is faster.... what a world. And I guess surprised isn't the right word - I read the news for living (sigh) and have seen weirder things - but somedays the human species just baffles me....

There's a huge underground market for car parts. If you look at this chart, you'll see auto theft is very common.

  9. Every 7 or so years cars are so redesigned that parts for older models become more expensive or harder to find, so there are more thefts of older models for the underground parts dealers.
