I just saw a drawing of the proposed new stadium. It instantly reminded me of those steamers you place in a pan and the individual pieces spread out.

That is the EXACT same thing I thought. A vegetable steamer! ha ha, what an ugly design

Do you mean that orange-y thing atop the building? The shape sort of reminds me of the black water spouts at the park by the Bremerton ferry dock, which actually spout water now and then, and are pretty cool.

But yeah, in the artist's renderings, it does resemble a metal steamer. An ugly copper colored one. Hopefully, CH and the other owners will consider all design options.

As for this renewable business, I think its funny that it will trap rain water and generate heat. In that regard its just like a turd.

I thought it looked more like a basketball being used like a bread bowl for chowder and/or ranch dressing.

I think the orange should be changed to a dark shade of green to incorporate the Emerald City and Evergreen State. I don't mind the design but the orange really throws me off.

I am digging this part of the design and want to see better pictures of it.

The latest designs for the proposed Sodo arena show shimmering walls of water along the west facade and on the stepped plaza to the main entryway.

This appears to be a food-inspired stadium design.

to see it from the angle shown in the rendering, you would need a helicopter.

from the street you won't really perceive that top piece.

I don't really care what it looks like as I judge my sports arenas more by the experience/view-lines inside.

the orange is kind of dopey--maybe a bone they threw the Port to sign off ("we'll match your cranes")
I like buff's idea of some sort of green, which would probably be part of the teams' color schemes.

The design so far is pretty ugly. I'm more interested in the inside and the accoustics. I'm sick of seeing music in the key arena, happy there will be a better venue for major tour stops.

AHEM! Harrrumph! Some of the best concerts I ever attended were in the "Key Arena".

Except, yeah, some of the worst also. (cough)

I'm a bit tired of every channel leading with "The Sonics Return Is a DONE Deal"

    My ass.

Maybe Chris will tweet "Screw you all, I gave it my best, stfu already!" soon, but it's far more likely to happen, fwiw.

Anyway, I meant to say stfu first, glad I beat the millionaire genius to it.

Yeah, according to certain talk radio stations it was a done deal days before it became a not so done deal.

The deepest pockets will win though. They always do.

When I saw it was a sustainable stadium I thought that referred to the players? I assumed they had figured out how to raise them in a sustainable manner. That way we would have hockey and basketball players forever and save the planet too! Wow!

On the other hand....the steamer is an interesting concept. How do you maintain a frozen hockey rink in a vegetable steamer?

And for that matter....hockey and basketball in the same stadium? Do they make the basketball players wear hockey skates? Or do the hockey players wear roller blades? Hmmm.

    iPlod,

Do you want to start a betting pool? I bet that even though they are holding all their events in a vegetable steamer they will offer no vegetarian dishes in the concessions?

I'll take some of that action, D!

the veggie steamer is lovely the more that I think about it.

it would be especially cool if they could collapse it when not in use.

D - Safeco Field has a number of veggie and some vegan items on the menu so this new stadium probably will have veggie food. Maybe "steamed". :)

Maybe they will serve Rocky Mountain oysters. I remember when Coors Field first opened and some people where upset since they thought they where real oysters from fresh mountain water.

Since 1995, sliced bull's testicles, battered and fried to a golden, chewy crisp, have been available at stand 144 in the ballpark, where they have a "small but hard-core following," says Aramark regional manager Richard Hesse. Play ball!

I am a self admitted not knowledgeable about sports on many levels. This back and forth you got the team, no, you don't, is irritating. Now here's my dumb question - how did we acquire our first basketball team. Was it a team we bought or was it created by recruits from other teams. If last option, why can't Seattle get players from recruiting & create a new team and not deal with this situation with Sacramento. And last dumb question, how in the heck did we lose the Sonics playing here? Was it a stadium issue that wouldn't be built?

I don't know how the Sonics started and I'm not certain w/ the NBA, but the NHL and most other pro sport leagues are pretty maxed out team-wise and oppose expansion.

the only way you get an NHL team or NFL team, etc. is to re-locate from another city.

and yes, the Sonics left when the owner(s) demanded a new arena with much greater public financial backing.

The Sonics where an expansion team and it all started in Seattle until they relocated to Oklahoma City. The Sacramento Kings would be an existing franchise relocated to Seattle. The Kings have been relocated several time since they started as the Rochester Royals 1945-57 Cincinnati Royals 1957-72 Kansas City-Omaha Kings 1972-75 Kansas City Kings 1972-75 Sacramento Kings 1985-13(heHe). I don't feel so bad since they have a long resume for location. If the league was to expand(create new team) it would also mess with alignment since it would create an uneven number of teams. I personally believe creating more teams would water down the product since there is only so much talent available.

"...water down the product since there is only so much talent available."

    Good piece of research, BH.

As I understand it, the Sonics were lost because of poor attendance and lack of support for their demand of public money to upgrade.

Now, we're being told private money will provide the upgrade but here we have this vagabond "team" taking up residence.

After the initial local euphoria of "having a team!" in a new stadium wears off, if they don't win often, (do you think they will?) we'll be back to the apathy that spelled doom for the previous Sonics.

What do you think about the long range prospects for an NBA team in Seattle?

    very true Iplod.

a poor product on the court (or rink) won't pay off, unless the niche is so well-defined that people will go anyway.

there's a certain 'hockey bar' nearby that I've gone to a number of times and been mostly disappointed. however the place is often packed so they've obviously identified a crowd that will gravitate there regardless of the piss-poor service.
