Any recommendations for a local hardware store that sells wax rings for toilets? We're putting down a new floor and have to lift the toilet, and wanna be prepared incase the ring is not so nice.

Whippet every hardware store in town - big, small and in between - sells wax rings, and more than one type. If you remove your toilet you MUST get a new wax ring or it will almost surely leak. Wax rings are only good for one use and that's it. A few tips: scrape the old ring off the floor and toilet well; when reinstalling use a taller ring if the contact point with the floor is recessed or the suface is uneven; definitely let the wax ring come up to indoor temperature before trying to reinstall; after you set the toilet down on the new ring gently rotate it (just a little bit, a few degrees) back and forth until it is totally seated against the floor; after that don't mess with it -- get that first solid worked-in seal and then bolt it down and let it be, more twisting or adjusting will only lead to woe and sadness.

Oh and buy an extra wax ring. They are cheap, and if on the first attempt the eagle doesn't quite land you'll be happy not to have to drive back to Morgan's.

reread what I wrote last night -- note that the wax ring goes on the toilet first, then you flip toilet over and lower it over the bolts -- didn't mean to imply otherwise. Good luck

every hardware store in town EXCEPT crown hill hardware. As far as I can tell, they haven't restocked anything since 2011.

I'd expect Morgan Plumbing to have them, but probably worth calling first. Like Ballardemician said, you need to replace it every time you lift the toilet. It's not that bad to replace one, and the wax peels up pretty easily with a putty knife. If you're squeamish, use a plastic one you can pitch afterwards.

Thanks everyone! Thanks Ballardamerican, We got the toilet back down with the new ring and the bolts were rusted, so now there's a whole new ball of wax... Pun not included.. :)

If the toilet was installed correctly from the start the rusted bolts should just slide out of the metal receptacle ring. These bolt should be on a "T" slot along the diameter of the metal ring. If the bolts are rusted check the condition of the metal receptacle ring. The bolts may be rusted from using floor cleaners and such and the ring protected by the wax. Check the condition of the floor around the ring for rot too.
Otherwise, my suggestion is to try the wax bar on 15th.
