Sorry Cate, Hattie's Hat isn't old Ballard anymore much less gritty.

Yeah, take it from Plod, he knows.

Hatties is great for brunch but there are so many it is hard to know where to start. Does brunch include drinks?

So Iplod where do you go to get your "gritty" brunch?

I'd be curious to hear of where in Ballard you get a stronger screwdriver or Bloody Mary with better food and better service than Hattie's.

What are you talking about, iplod? Hattie's is as old Ballard as it gets.

I say Volterra or Portage Bay Cafe if it's a nice date; otherwise, Hattie's. Senor Moose is good too, but there's usually a long wait.

And it's still pretty gritty and been around long enough to be considered old for sure.

I'd say it depends on the date. What is he/she like? Would he/she appreciate gritty or would they like more of a dress up place? What is the desired reaction? Do you want "wow, this place is excellent" or "wow, this person knows the really cool places"?

I'm really partial to Vera's, but not sure if it's date-worthy. It's pretty great though.

Gritty, yes, but the food is really good. I'm just bummed that they took the smoked salmon club off the menu. I asked them why, and they said they smoked the salmon themselves and not enough people ordered it. Smoking their own salmon - that's pretty impressive, especially for a dive bar. I love that about Seattle. Some of its dive bars have terrific food.

I took a date to Hattie's Hat once because I like the atmosphere. We watched a large rat walk around the room while waiting for the food. It didn't bother me but it was the one and only date I had with her.

Take her to The Viking, if she's too good for a Sloppy Sven then she's too good for you.

assuming it is on a Sunday I say Bastille. It is a great mix of upscale food but normal brunch fare as well. Then you can walk around the Market, maybe get some fresh donuts or Cider. Even set her up for a second date by offering to buy some local goods and cook her a meal. Afterwards you could take her back to your place and f@@k the s@@t out of her.

    It would be very romantic.

that kid looked very bitter that he was moved to the mid-west.
