If they installed this on Aurora I think I would be addicted to watching it especially at night.

Neighbors who are fed up with crime in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District are taking matters into their own hands by installing nine new security cameras and a surveillance system.

“We have a lot of people walking around, kinda look scary for the seniors. We felt like we need to do something,” said Nora Chan, with Seniors In Action Foundation.

The project has taken the group of senior citizens and businesses three years and costs around $100,000.

It will be interesting to see how many people get arrested for pooping in public. The documentary might be a good selling point for the Honey Bucket in Ballard Commons;)

Maybe it would help us catch the person stealing rocks and bird baths!!! Seriously - I would be totally ok with lots of cameras on my street. I wish there was a police officer who lived on my block so they would park their cruiser right outside my house.

Since the whole nation has gone reality TV I am sure you could get a production company to pay the surveillance cost for the footage and rights.

Meanwhile, in Berlin, people are making a video game out of destroying surveillance cameras:

FYI - in the UK there are almost 2 million CCTV cameras installed on the streets! If you travel in the UK you can be sure you were on camera at some point.
They do work to stop crime because the authorities can get a good idea as to what is going on in the community by reviewing the the footage.
I don't object and in fact would welcome it in our cities here. If you are not doing anything wrong then you don't have anything to worry about.

Popping up in our neck of the woods, too.

Depends on the definition of "wrong", doesn't it?

Being gay is "wrong" in some places...

We had an officer who kept her cruiser at the house a block from our old residence. You could see the police car from my house. Our cars were still rifled through regularly. We didn't keep anything in there to take, but would still come out in the morning to see our miscellaneous glove box papers (tire warrantee, insurance card, manual, flashlight, fast food napkins) strewn over the passenger seat.

I actually did see someone just come out of the bushes after pooping the other day :( At least I think he was pooping, he was pulling up his pants. I didn't see him wash his hands either, maybe he'll get the norovirus.

I saw a crack head going down on another crack head the other day, but this was Not Ballard Related. Did I mention this already?

I spent hours disinfecting my eyes.

P'Daddy, A friend of mine actually lived a few doors down from a State Patrol officer who parked his squad car in front of the house. Every night teenagers would drive by honking their horns and screaming obscenities. Be careful what you wish for!

    More cameras!

    Cameras are for the innocent!

Except with all these cameras, even the innocent will soon be found guilty of something or other sooner or later.

(YOUR HOME HYGIENE COMMITTEE HAS NOTED YOU DID NOT FLOSS LAST NIGHT. AS YOU HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY INFORMED, ANY EGREGIOUS DISRESPECT OF CIVIL DECORUM INCLUDING NEGLECT OF FLOSSING WILL IMMEDIATELY RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC DEBIT OF $1400.00 FROM YOUR "GOOD CITIZEN" ACCOUNT. THIS NOTICE IS SERVED TO INFORM YOU OF SAID DEBIT. AS PER RCW 1.MO.BS-STATUTE, ANY PROTEST WILL RESULT IN FURTHER AUTOMATIC DEBITS OF $1400.00 FOR EACH VIOLATION.)

I'm with Midwest on this one. Like what if you're "different" in some way?

I had this argument with my sister-in-law once on the ride home after crossing the US/Canada border. She said that no matter how invasive the security was it is worth it for "safety". I said that's easy for you to say as you are a middle aged soccer mom from the Midwest, I think she would feel differently if she was a 25 year old Muslim American male who is detained every single time they go through security. (This conversation took place in 2002).

    Slippery slope IMHO.
