I just had it reported that it was BRIGHT sunshine and blue skies over on Market and 15th. Well, I'm up here at 65th and we've still got Eeyore skies. In fact, often when I see or hear about sunshine in Ballard, I have Eeyore skies. Is my weather just getting trapped by crown hill? What are some of the other idiosyncracies that nooks and crannies of greater Ballard have?

phoo - I am on 62nd and 28th and the sun was shining here for a bit, but not now. It is bright out at the moment and I am thinking the cloud layer is thin.

Bright sunshine here in hillbilly country. Heading out for a long walk with my dog Mynah.

There is a hill at the the base of 28th where it meets 56 and 57th. In the early morning water, mist and ice sometimes accumulate in different places along the approach to that slope. Depending on how far out you are from where that slope starts (east or west), your car might be total covered with frost, or only on one exposure, or covered in water or totally dry.

Edog is right about the biggest influence on microclimate in Ballard -- the south sloping hill. It snows more at 15th and 80th than 15th and Market. Mostly south exposure in Ballard, so not too much effect from slope aspect, but still it's usually just a little warmer away from the water, protected from wind, open to the afternoon sun, and not on the cold-air-sink flats down by the ship canal.

But over all the climate in Ballard is pretty homogeneous? Magnolia is a different story - usually 3-5 degrees warmer on the south end than at the foot of the north slope (fronting the ship canal). Doesn't seem like much but we have so many marginal temperature days in Seattle, and 67 feel more like picnic weather than 63. Queen Anne is somewhat the same as Magnolia. Wallingford is the banana belt: well-protected, cold-air-draining, south facing bowl far enough off the Sound. We should tear down all the houses and plant Wallingford with Pinot Noir!

  6. A beautiful day. I finally got over to watch the snowy owl and saw it fly from treetop to rooftop. Lovely view of the olympics with low puffy clouds. Lots of little dogs passing by for Lillie to play with. Florious weather!

Indeed SmartsyArtsy. In the words of Lewis Carroll "O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! ...."

Mynah and I missed the owl, walked from hillbilly land down to 32nd and 70th before turning back. Lots of dogs out. Might have even seen you. Stopped and chatted with various dog owners out along the way, but my dog is big!

    "Florious weather!"

    I love typos.

Say that again when the flowers are blooming smartsy. You made an adjective today. :D

  10. Not so glorious or florious today. Sure tricked me. I was all ready to wonder through Discovery Park in the sunshine.
