I'm with Joe on the shot gun thing. Not because I voted for this administration, but Dad always said the further you live from law enforement the more you need a shot gun around the place. In that sense, Joe's comments resonated deeply with me.

When it comes to brass tacks, if I lived in the stixs, I think I'd rather live with two BIG dogs than worry about ammo.

Edog.....since you mention it....brass tacks might not be a bad idea either? Strewn around the doorways? Or some caltrops? Sharpened? Should get quite a yelp from the miscreants as they try to enter. An old trick used by sailors at night in pirate waters.

    Paranoia Will Destroy Ya....

I suppose if I lived out in the country where some knuckle-dragger might come a-callin' I'd consider a shot gun.

50-plus years here in the city and not a single occasion where I felt that I ought to have a gun around.

Edog - both would be good! But for home protection for the average person a pump shotgun with "000" buckshot would be very effective against "bad" people. And a box of shotgun "slug" shells just in case one needed to shoot down the street at a zombie or two.
Average folks would have a hard time with an assault weapon. So Joe is probably right. Both make a lot of noise and both have kick back so if you are not ready you could get hurt.
And most dogs are only good for letting you know there are possibly "bad" people nearby, most "bad" people can take care of a dog if they want to get something.

Also a shotgun is cheaper than and AR-15. Ammo is cheaper. A pump shotgun can be modified legally to hold up to 9 shells, so what more do you need.

Makes total sense to me. If the animals don't survive we won't be far behind. But I tend to have conflicted feelings - I usually cheer for the bears and sharks and the occasional mountain goat.

Don't misunderstand me, I am all about saving the wild animals of this earth and not annihilating them! But if there ever comes a time in my life when civilization collapses and the food supply is gone, then I will procure and eat anything that keeps me and my family alive.

I have been told on good authority that the only safe place in the event of a zombie apocalypse is a North Sea oil rig :-)

pg - until someone flies in that is infected or as in the series just dies and comes back! Ahhhh, we are screwed! Have you watched the series pg? I got so hooked on it, very addictive.
Oil rig! no where to go if a zombie does appear. I am a lousy swimmer in open water so I would soon be a zombie. :)

We will have to snag a helicopter up in Scotland. When we get there those things are so tall that we can shoot them on arrival. Sorted.

Romeros last film has a scene on a ferryboat that's the closest thing to an oil rig I think has ever been zombie dramatized.

pg - I think I would like to just take over a wee castle in the glen (Monarch of the Glen type) and hold them off there. Lot's of deer and fish and other stuff to eat. I think the oil rig would freak me out after a few weeks of isolation, how the heck do you get off those things in a wild North Sea storm and no helo? Argh! And if in a castle one could take run to get supplies of single malt from somewhere, I am sure. :)

Do you remember "The Thing"? That would be like an oil rig - isolated, no hope for a lone ranger to come riding along and that monster was pretty much like a zombie.

I'm not trying to be snarky, :) just seriously surprised at the level of popularity that zombies have in our culture all of a sudden. FWIW, I don't get PBR either, it tastes like piss, if it was $.50 on happy hour that would be too much.

Ernie - I know what you mean about zombie popularity. I never watched those types of movies and when I used to see all the zombie outfitted folks at Fremont I never understood the appeal but then my daughter mentioned The Walking Dead and I started watching and got totally hooked! Just something about the way the series is setup got me addicted to it.
My thoughts on the popularity is that the whole "end of the world" thing, last year, got people thinking about possible scenarios for the Apocalypse and zombies fits right into that.
We are like sheep in that respect, one goes and most of us follow.

Try and find this online: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Set

As for the whole 'zombie' thing, I think the film 28 days later had a lot to do with it. That's well worth a watch if you haven't already seen it.

I recall explaining the wisdom of a shotgun for home defence years ago here.

I do own a 7-iron. You'd be wise to drop when you feel the shotgun, fwiw.

AR-15 is over-rated, talk about a pea-shooter, maybe it's good for slaughtering children, mall shoppers etc.

Sorry for that, but it is true.

Stopping power, several rounds, slugs or flack, shotgun. Period.

Then, call serve-pro, 'Like it never even happened", fwiw.

I am manic insane for good a Zombie film!! The concept moves me like no other. Problem is the concept is frequently misunderstood. (I think the zombie thing has been simmering for a long time and well predates the hipster kids.) Sean of the Dead is a great film but its a blip compared to how the Walking Dead comics have moved and contributed to the genre. Maybe I state the obvious but a "real" zombie film is science fiction first and horror second and that's what makes Romero the god; he nails that point. The gore and horror usually contribute more to the comedy than the fear. The real angst is derived from the collapse of civilization for whatever reason. It can be a metaphor for many things but its mostly about natural limits and what point we lose our humanity. And I think it's that idea that makes these films so popular today. In many different ways its hard not to look at the world and wonder how long this can go on. The opening credit sequence of the Dawn of the Dead remake that came out around the same time as Sean of the Dead did and excellent job of illustrating the theme in a brilliant montage that left me in a state of total euphoria.
