I was just reading the Populuxe Brewing has passed its final building inspection 1/28 and Health Department inspection (which has to do with their tasting room) was supposed to be Friday (2/1). They were brewing last Saturday the 29th, the same day as the Ballard Tribune article about their progress and and posted on their FB page that they are a few weeks behind but it looks like they should be open this month.

Meanwhile Peddler Brewing posted on their FB page yesterday that they just passed their final building inspection and their glassware and chairs arrived. They are planning on opening by the end of the month.

So here is where we will be by the end of February (hopefully)!

    West of 15th:
Ballard Urban Family Public House (2012) -- 5329 Ballard Ave. NW
    Hilliard's (2011) -- 1550 NW 49th St. (between 15th and 17th Ave.)
    NW Peaks (2010) -- 4912 17th Ave NW (17th Ave. @ 49th St.)
Peddler Brewing (2013) -- 5914 Leary Way NW (Leary on the West side of the Ballard Bridge)

    East of 15th:
Maritime Pacific (1990) -- 1111 NW Ballard Way (between 11th and 14th Ave)
    Reuben's Brews (2012) -- 1406 NW 53rd St. (between 14th and 15th Ave behind Bardahl)
    Populuxe (2013) -- 826B NW 49th St. (between 8th and 9th Ave.)
    Hales (1995) -- 4301 Leary Way (Leary @43rd St.)

While last year we did a brewery crawl of 5 breweries on my Birthday (Hales, MP, Hilliard's, MP, and UF though they weren't brewing), this May, we are doing all 8! Hell yeah! I may be dead before 30.

I am digging SEdholm brewery crawl idea. We can have a MyBallard crawl and then when it is over everyone can go home to there parents basement and PUI on the forum. It would be epic to read the next day especially when editing is expired

When we did it we walked from the bridge to Hale's and through to UFPH to my apartment on 24/60th and it was 2.5 miles or so. A bit more walking now with Populuxe and Rueben's, but maybe 3-3.1 miles? It isn't bad really. Though MP got mad at us for bringing 12 people in at a drop for a drink. Their server was angry that day though as the bartender was fine with it all.

    Why not? Bloat = float.

What's sad about Boris floating? We can rig him with colorful lights first.

Nothing wrong with him floating I suppose. With a bit of luck he'll end up on one of the islands.

ks - thanks for posting that information. As a beer aficionado I enjoy tasting any new brews.
I am hoping we can coordinate an afternoon/evening walk by MyBallard Forum members to all 8 of the establishments when they are all open and sample a beer at each one.
Who is up for that? It would probably have to be in March or April depending on when all of the newer breweries are up and running.
Bike riding would be the preferred mode of transport but I am not opposed to walking. :)
We could meet near the Ballard Bridge and walk/bike from there.

I would be up for a brewery crawl. Since SEdholm and I are neighbors we could even plan some special send off or maybe even get my wife to ferry us all back from Ballard's nether regions. It would be worth asking anyway.

Populux posted on 2/10 that the paperwork and inspections are done and they are brewing. They currently have an ESB, an IPA and a CDA in progress. Planned opening is first week of March.

Peddler posted on 2/10 that their tasting room was finished and they are getting close.

An article about Peddler on the Cascade Bike Blog is reporting that opening will be by the end of February.

They also report that Peddler has a seven-barrel brewing system and there will be eight taps. Unclear exactly what they will start with but they mentioned an interest in "Belgians, IPAs, Kolsch, Caramel ESB, tangerine wheat.” Hours as supposed to initially be Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Mmm, I'm all for Belgian style, and the ESB could be good too. I'm curious to try their tangerine wheat, since I've tasted two good ones - but I couldn't drink very much of either one.

    From Populuxe:
People have been asking which food trucks will be joining us for our founders openings. We are thrilled to have Skinny Phoenix on 2/28, Diablo Food Truckz on 3/1 and The Jerk Station on 3/2. THESE OPENING EVENTS ARE BY INVITE ONLY. We will announce regular operating hours on 3/3 and can't wait to meet all our neighbors!

Peddler links to this article from Craft Brew Monger on the opening set for March 8.
    http://craftbeermonger.com/2013/02/25/peddler-brewing-is-set-to-open-on-march-8th/
    From the article:
Starting out with a 7-barrel brewing system, Peddler can brew up to 14 kegs per batch, and plan to open with 8 beers on tap including:

    Kolsch
    Caramel ESB
    Pale Ale
    IPA
    Tangerine-Wheat
Snow Beer’d (A Dark Winter Beer)
    Belgian Lights (A Winter-Spiced Belgian)
    Coffee-Saison
Patrons can enjoy tasters or pints at the brewery or take them to go in 32oz bottles and 64oz growlers. Peddler does not currently provide any type of food, but any outside food either brought or delivered is always welcome. Come on out on March 8th and welcome them to the neighborhood.

Also I was in Urban Family Public House a couple days ago and got some news.
They are looking to move the brewery out to a designated brewery space to increase production. The pub will use the space for kitchen improvements, more keg space and more seating. They didn't give me the exact brewery location but it will be in the warehouse district of Ballard.

I stopped in at Reuben's the other night and they had tapped a new brew called Bourbon Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout.
Not only a complex name but the flavors from this brew were amazing. A brew with chocolate and coffee flavors up front, vanilla undertones and a bourbon finish. WOW!
This whole Ballard Industrial Brewery idea really puts a new twist on taking the dog out for a spin.
I just wish they would tone down the spot lights inside and create a more comfortable atmosphere.

I'll definitely try to get down on the 8th. If not on the 8th shortly thereafter. My favorites in the Fremont/Ballard area are Reubens and Fremont but I probably patronize UFPH/Brewery most often just because it is on Ballard Ave. I do get to Reuben's and Fremont regularly ... NW Peaks and Hilliards periodically ... Maritime less often and Hales only very infrequently. I have been to Outlander only once so far but I liked what they were doing. Need to squeeze in another visit sometime soon.

Did anybody get down to Peddler or Populuxe?

We stopped at Peddler about 5 minutes after they opened and there were already maybe 15 people in there. I had the coffee saison. Nice. I thought the coffee characteristic was subtle. I am not really a stylistic expert but it was a little below the IBUs expected for saisons and I got a lot of banana esthers. Large crowd filled the place and out the door by 5:30-6p. I was reading that they poured 1200 tasters over the weekend (I don't know if they mean 1200 individual 4oz tasters or 1200 8x4 oz taster assortments). Either way they obviously sold a lot of beer in their opening weekend.

We walked down and was glad I didn't ride. The bike rack area was difficult to access with the crowd. People were standing in every available space by the time we left. I am sure that when the crowds level off this will work great.

I was a little surprised to see the tasting room in what was the brewery portion when Maritime was there. It was unclear what they were using the old pub portion for. Does anyone know?

I enjoyed both. I tried to go to Peddler first, but was too packed so I went to Populuxe. They blew through one beer fast so I had the IPA while my fiance had the Euroblonde. We both agreed the IPA was better. I wish they had more than 3. I liked the venue a lot, especially the back area outside.
Turns out our decision was right as we got to Peddler's and was able to get in. Wanted a sampler, but wasn't going to attempt to carry one through the crowd. Had the IPA and sampled the Snow Beer'd. She had the Tangerine-Wheat and sampled the coffee saison. The saison was interesting, probably wont get it again. She loved the T-W, I didn't. I love the IPA though, better than Populuxe. The Snow Beer'd wasn't bad at all.
Both great places. I may visit more to Peddler's due to it is 5 minutes closer and they have more beers

Tried the CDA at Populuxe...three times. It was great. I have only had three of them in my life now, so I am not capable of commenting on where it stacks up in comparison to other brewery's CDA's or the style in general. Can't wait to try the IPA someday when/if they can keep it in stock. It would be really cool if Ballard became kind of comparable to what Woodinville is for wine.

Update on Bad Jimmy's. Their opening is on track for late April or possibly early May.
    http://craftbeermonger.com/2013/04/04/bad-jimmys-progress-update/

I also finally got over to Populuxe. I met Pete and his wife Amy. I love the intimate tasting room. The beer was good. They were doing an English-style Bitter Ale (The Burke-Gilman Bitter I think) which is not that common a style here. The only other one locally I can recall seeing is the Big Al ESC Brougham Bitter. I also had the Beer Snob Brown. They were playing old school hip hop on a Pandora channel and I talked to Amy at some length about punk rock back in the day. Good times.

New brewery Stoup Brewing is coming to Ballard this Summer. They are going to have initial production capacity of 15 barrels.

AllisonNW was this the brewery you mentioned above?

Here is the FB Page for Stoup.

Stoup will be at 1108 NW 52nd Street (basically 11th and 52nd) about .3 miles from Populuxe (49th closer to 9th than 8th) and about .2 miles to Reuben's Brews (14th and 53rd). Nice!
