Many years ago I had a Korean coworker who shared his lunar new year slightly-sweet bean curd treats with the office. As lunar new year has rolled around again, I wonder if anyone has seen similar treats on sale anywhere locally (greater Ballard area). I'm not concerned about getting specifically Korean vs. Chinese, Japanese, etc.

Happy Lunar New Year to all!

Not exactly Ballard but Uwajimaya, HT Market, or Central Market probably carry the item you describe.

If HT Market doesn't have it, there's H Mart way up in Lynnwood. It's across the street from Alderwood mall (in the back). They are huge and some of their items are cheaper than HT Market (but HT market is generally cheap too). It may take you forever to find what you want, but it should be in there somewhere.

How about that Tokara up on Phinney. I see it all the time but haven't been in. Here's a link I found:

Keep in mind that if you don't find your product where it looks like it should be, try another aisle. Sometimes things are sorted by cuisine (both at Hmart and HTMarket). Curtis, that is a very interesting confectionery store.

    From the site:
"Tokara holds an open house on Sunday of the third week of every month. For $11.00 (+50 cent / box) you can enjoy a special box set including 3 types of sweets made especially for the season at hand. Tokara will welcome bringing your own containers."

In the ID not Ballard there is this wonderful tiny Asian Bakery by my work. It is on 8th S between S Lane Street and King Street, east side if the street. They do a few French type things but most of what they do are wonderful buns stuffed with all kinds of good things including sweet bean paste.

All good ideas, thanks! I've done the Tokara monthly special and can vouch that her creations are amazing! I gave some for Christmas gifts a few years ago and had some Japanese thinking I must have been to Japan to be able to get the "real" thing.
