This was sent to block captains. I think it's fit for wider distribution.

    Let's be careful out there!

    ***************

    Dear Block Captains/Contacts:
We wanted to notify you that there have been three separate sexually-motivated attacks on women across the North Precinct. The descriptions of the suspect vary, as does neighborhood, time of day and day of the week. The common threads have been that the women were either walking or running by themselves, and were approached by an unknown male. Two of the incidents occurred next to wooded areas. SPD Patrol officers and Detectives are doing all they can to identify and apprehend the suspect(s). I will keep you informed of our progress. In the meantime, please review these personal safety tips:
Awareness and avoidance: Keep alert and tuned in to your surroundings.
Do you know your location? Do you know the street names, hundred block? East, South, West, North? Could you tell the 9-1-1 call taker to where they need to dispatch responders?
Trust your instincts! If you have an uncomfortable feeling-honor it! Leave, cross the street, double-back. Forget “being nice”. If you feel uncomfortable, move! Don’t hesitate to make a scene or scream if necessary.
Try to get good descriptions of anyone acting suspiciously or threatening. Start from the head and work down. Most likely you know your height, so use this to gauge theirs.
Try and stay on streets where you can be easily seen by others. Well-lighted streets are best.
If traveling alone, take a charged up cell phone with you if possible. Know what is available to you along your route. What time does that store open or close? Does that apt.bldg. have a security guard? Is there a payphone?
Ipod earphones, etc. may prevent you from hearing someone approaching. As does texting while you are walking, waiting for the bus, etc. You need to be aware when out if public spaces.
Traveling with another person, is tried and true in reducing street crime. Going with two others reduces the risk even more.
Carrying a minimum amount of possessions is advised when out and about. It isn’t necessary to carry all your credit cards, check book, cash, and so on, every time you go out. Take what you need for this trip. Keep valuables close to the body, in inside pockets. This frees up your hands and does not invite pickpocketing.

Body Language: Stand tall, walk confidently with your head up, eyes open and constantly scanning the surroundings.
Try not to show fear. Keep a neutral face that shows you are “in charge”.
Wear appropriate clothing for the street. Shoes that are comfortable and allow you to run if necessary. Choose clothing that allows you to move, and does not block your vision.

And as always, please call 9-1-1 for anything suspicious or to report a crime in progress.

Do not hesitate to call me at the North Precinct if you need more. Also, please check our website for more info. http://www.seattle.gov/police
Thanks for sharing this information with others on your distribution list.

We have had 2 in the space of 24 hours. An attempted kidnapping at 85th and 3rd at 8pm last night and an assault at Greenlake at 7am this morning. These are both brazen attacks. Stay safe, be aware of your surroundings and keep your eyes and ears fully open.

And while I'm not normally one to let the actions of others deter me from going about my business, for now I say - ladies, whenever possible walk with someone. If you can't, be on high alert.

I am surprised they don't post that info on the homepage of the North Seattle neighborhood blogs. I think it is a lot more important than other info posted especially that horrible cartoon that was running.

Such a cozy little part of the city where everything is within walking distance, as long as you don't get dragged into the woods, beaten and raped.

I got a little peeved on the other thread because Phinneywood put more importance on other things. Sorry about that - but we should be aware. The folks who visit that site would actually have to dig to find the (not updated) info.

I think all these forums display stories strictly in the order they were posted. I agree there should be a way to bump and maintain important stories to a prominent area.

On the news this morning they said now there has been four incidents. The one in Greenwood was right by Fred Meyers. Be aware of your surroundings! And I was told don't wear earphones while walking/jogging because it drowns out your surroundings.

Good advice on maintaing a high level of situational awareness.
I hope this is resolved soon, I've always considered Greenlake pretty safe. The incident in Greenwood was close to home and quite disturbing.

Looking forward to returning to a fairly quiet neighborhood with an occasional drunk and sidewalk problem.

I dunno, I think that this kind of thing has become so commonplace in the neighborhood that it's actually NOT big news. Let's review the last year, shall we?

    Shooting at car wash
    serial rapist masquerading as cop
stranger on my porch late at night/outside my bedroom window a few days later
    serial rapist/massage parlors
    hostage situation above Gorditos
serial abduction/attempted assault (and from the descriptions, good chance there are two or more guys)

SO...I'd say that we have a pretty bad everyday crime situation on our hands in this neighborhood.

I think there has been a big uptick in crime in the Greenwood neighborhood and it surprises me because McGinn lives so close. I think the only reason we are hearing about this is because people are blogging about it. I've rarely heard about serial rapists or numerous break ins unless I read it on this blog -- then the news picks up on it. We sure aren't warned by the cops until there have been at least 10 rapes over a nine month period. I only heard about the issue of break ins when people were home by going to NPAC meetings - and then come to find out the perpetrator was 19 years old, well known by the cops, and had been in trouble for the same thing when he was a juvenile. I like the article on the Ballard News Tribune about a person well known to the cops for drug related issues and having 50 narcotics arrests in his past. What does it take to take these guys off the street when they are either burglarizing homes and businesses or mugging people for the money needed for drugs. Something is really haywire with our lenient judicial system just because the kid had a bad childhood.

Norge - you can thank the prosecutors and/or the judges. They make the final decisions on these creeps as far as what time they serve, if any. 50 arrests is ridiculous. That has to change.

The one who had the extensive juvenile record, if it's the same one I am thinking about, was quite proud of his exploits as evidenced by his Facebook page. His father was also proud of his sons exploits, he seemed to think it was getting back what the "man" took away. The kid even posed with some of the stolen items. I guess they (the son and the father) weren't so big on privacy settings.

Everyone should be held accountable and penalties should be stricter even for juveniles. It's sad though that there are some kids who will probably not have too much of a chance for normalcy due to parental crappiness.

Gracie don't forget juries. I was on one that was way too lenient on a serial sexual perp that nearly killed a woman. Of course hard core drugs were involved. Probably the worst three weeks of my life.

MIttens - you are right. I did forget juries. Thanks for pointing that out. And teigyr had good point too about parents. I know before (not sure how the law is now) but if a juvenile stole a car and got caught. Went to Juvenile Hall and then was released. No time and it was almost like the juveniles knew it and was "in your face" about it. They knew there was no punishment. Like I said, not sure how it goes today but one thing is true need to be stricter on punishment for juveniles in the judicial system.

Yeah, pointing a finger at anyone is difficult when everyone is culpable.

Everyone counts on a pass from everyone else. It is pretty sad.

If you do not take your personal safety seriously, you are not helping.
If you do not take the personal safety of all others seriously, you are definitely a problem.

Oh well, I've beat the skin off of this drum already, and it does no good.

Lets talk about the seven stages of every society again, for a chuckle.

    head trauma victim? lol

The post office has been hemorrhaging billions since even before Publisher's Clearinghouse went completely online.

They were required BY LAW since 2004 to ACTUALLY FUND employee retirement accounts.

Of course, they blame that law, which means, they don't steal enough yet to break even.

Maybe, if they could just print money, or better yet, print even more junk mail, they'd be okay too, and you all can say 'what debt? where's my carpet cleaning discount this week?' or even, 'what?! you can't deliver junk six days a week?!!'

Anyway, your precious little flowers will get yet another bail-out. cheers.

I blame Ally's direct deposits and online shopping, fwiw.

I have to kind of agree with 1der here. The post office delivers the junk mail, therefore technically they are responsible for it. Or am I missing something? Is someone holding a gun to their head? Are they obligated to deliver junk mail?

I'm serious here. I don't know the ins and outs of the post office.

Not murder mysteries. J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle Earth. Hobbits are gentle quiet folk who are difficult to see when us big folks are around. They like two breakfasts, tobacco and fireworks. And they have hairy feet with soles like leather and usually are barefoot. They are blessed with a gentle kind of magic that makes gardens grow well.
