Tonight around 8:00pm there were 5 police cars in front of the Majestic Bay theater. Does anyone know what happened? Curious as it was quite a show of force with lights and all.

i heard an employee went nuts. i saw him park backwards (against traffic) on 56th street near the golden city. he was visibly distressed.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Wow! What happened with the employee? Anyone else have more info?
Posted 3 years ago # -
i hope he's doing okay.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Maybe he was upset they were going to play that hamster movie there?

not enough vegan options at the snack bar

LOL.
WWF - I adore your icon, by the way.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Seriously, though, what is up with their crummy movies? It's mostly kid's stuff and chick-flicks.
Posted 3 years ago # -
thanks Silver! :]

MyMallard, I don't know if it's necessarily their choice as much as it's the crop of movies out there. Then again I did just watch Harry Potter there, so what do I know...

SPG, you might be right....I might just be seeing what I'm looking for, but I think there's pattern here! We'll give it some more time :)

The Bay tends toward family-friendly fare, and nerd movies. Last summer they ran midnight showings of classic Gen X movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark. Not sure if they're doing that this year.
I sometimes wish the Bay showed more edgy flicks, but then again, I kind of like their warm & fuzzy policy. And they *do* show geek flicks. :)

I'm a big fan of the Majestic Bay, but with these caveats...
1. Don't bother going if it isn't on the main screen. My TV is bigger than their upstairs theater.
2. They really, really need to fix that seizure inducing flashing Elltaes Theaters promo and turn the volume back down from 11 to match the other trailers.Other than that, the screen is big, the sound is good, the theater is close to home, AND NO COMMERCIALS!!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Yeah the Elltaes Theaters promo is ear shattering loud. It's a bit much. haha
Posted 3 years ago # -
My favorite part of the whole esperience is that vintage black-and-white mini-film that always plays before the flicks with that little narc kid ("What happens if you see someone smoking? Go get an usher and rat him out!!!"). For some reason it never fails to crack me up.
I also appear to be in the minority - I really like the frame-by-frame video of the running horse. There's a great backstory to it.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I like that part too. So, what is the back story to that?
Posted 3 years ago # -
I don't dislike the video...I dislike the VOLUME OF THE ELLTAES THEATRE WELCOMING YOU. Get my point? hahahahaha

again and Again And AGAIN
I like the horses and the trailer.

I really only like to see movies in the big theatre. The small ones aren't terrible if you get there early enough and can grab a seat in the back, but dealing with the eye rollers who feel so put out when you have to walk past them to get seats in the one aisle theatre. If you don't want to be climbed over, sit in one of the empty seats between yourself and the wall. Otherwise your heaving sighs and big production of (barely) moving your legs only encourages me to spill my popcorn on you. (not that i have. popcorn's expensive!)

The still images of the horse running is widely considered the genesis of the moving picture. Two bored rich guys were trying to settle a bet over whether all of a horses hooves leave the ground while running. They had the money to set up a series of cameras with wires to trigger them as the horse ran by and broke the wires.
It's a cool concept and all, it's just that the FLASH! FLASH! FLASH! in a dark room along with an obviously pisspoor audio mix at 50% higher level than anything else is shockingly annoying. All they need to do is tone it down a bit. Less of a jump in the brightness on the flashes and turn the F---ing volume down and everyone would enjoy the promo and those of us in the business get to see a clever homage to the beginning of motion pictures.Posted 3 years ago # -
That's a cool story. I guess the twenty or so years of rock bands in my past kind of skew the whole volume thing for me...I like to feel it, still, I understand that it could hurt.

The problem isn't really with the running horse image, just all the flashing and the volume. 'Seizure inducing' was actually a pretty good description. I feel like that darn horse is running through my head like it's the Derby.
Posted 3 years ago # -
To deal with the flashing, I simply close my eyes. The volume thing, though, is annoying.
Posted 3 years ago # -
A promo is counter productive if you have to close your eyes every time.
Posted 3 years ago # -
wow, listening to people complain about the quality and the sound. yall sound like a buncha elderly
YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN
Posted 3 years ago # -
Oh you kids! No, I actually work in media and know the difference. Maybe we sound like a bunch of cranky critics.
The Elttaes promo was made by a local company who dropped the ball when it came to finalizing the project. They don't do big screen stuff so they were tempted by all the cool toys and overused them when making this spot. It must have seemed really cool at the time to crank up the volume and use the surround effects, but it's pretty lame for us to have to suffer through it again and again and again and ...Posted 3 years ago # -
You Kids Get OFF THIS FORUM!!
Is this thread still going on?! ;)
Anybody remember the old Bay? Yikes.
Posted 3 years ago # -
When my ears bleed it's time to lower the volume. hahaha
Posted 3 years ago # -
For the Elttaes horsey part, and and friends look as dorky as it gets: fingers in ears and eyes closed. Other than that, I love that theatre. Yeah, the movies are often "family fare", but it's family owned, it's a one-off, not a chain, and the counter-tops are amazing.
Any typography-heads out there? the most annoying part of the gallopy loud thing is the text for "Feature Presentation". the last word looks like "P resentation". makes me nuts. but I'm just being sensitive, I guess.

Area Man - you read FARK, don't you?
And you're a font fetishist.
And a geek.
Are you single?
(Just kidding!!)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Silver, your previous post perplexes me.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Oh ho! lakreitz... I almost replied to Silver to say I understood and agreed. I love it when someone can spot an extra space! Or, heaven forbid, just one space between sentences instead of two.
Some of us are too excited by the small things in life. (well - not those small things)Posted 3 years ago # -
Area Man <-- onion thing.
Fark <-- for 4chan wannnabes.
encyclopedia dramatica for lyfe.

Silver...geek from way back, but with an active right-brain. These are traits I share with my other half.
speaking of geek, anyone else notice that the bay's website was infected for a while? one of my browsers kept telling me that it was a malware vector. I called to tell them and they said that their "web person" was on it. I checked a week later with no change. Seems ok now though.
========
oh...
I do love typography, though I'm a hack (not specifically trained that way)I {heart} the onion! I never saw anything on 4chan worth returning for. then again, don't read fark either. I'm too selective, maybe
Posted 3 years ago # -
lakreitz - Pshaw! It's perfectly parse-able!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Okay, yeah, I guess that The Onion uses "Area Man" more often that FARK does.
Despite my brilliant geek cred, I only recently discovered 4chan! I was watching some YouTube vids about the history of various internet memes by "Rocketboom" and a lot of the memes trace back to 4chan. Impressive!
These days I try to avoid sites that can eat my life.
Except for this one, of course. ;-)

The first movie I EVER saw was at the Bay: Lady and the Tramp. Obviosly this as imprinted on my brain...see Dog Days of Ballard.
This is when they had a balcony. I'm happy with the selection of movies- don't forget, that there are a lot of little kids in the neighborhood. Did you know that Ballard had, at one time, a bunch of movie theatres? One on 14th,one on 65th and 8th a couple on Ballard Avenue, the Baghdad in the Ballard Building...
Posted 3 years ago # -
PS, I think the Elttaes thing is too loud...and I didn't realize it was "Seattle" spelled backwards for the longes time. Duh! I am TIRED of the kids in the black and white trailer- really, can't they make a new one sometime?
Posted 3 years ago # -
maybe someone can point me to the better neighborhoods within 4chan...I'm willing to give another chance
