  2. Your "Job Description" doesn't include a description of the job. Not one word. It's just a run on of required work habits.

Even in this climate, applicants deserve to know what their responsibilities will be.

A pay rate might be nice too.

Isn't this more "Classifieds" material anyway?

In their defense, all they are asking for is a non-slacker.

Hmm. They are a mailing store, looking for someone who has run a register, used a computer, knows a little about customer service, can follow direction, and occasionally lift things. I bet the job has something to do with helping customers ship items, making sure the items are properlypacked & labeled for shipping, using the FedEx/UPS websites, taking money for the service, and putting the packages somewhere to await FedEx/UPS pickup.

Maybe you also have to sell stamps, arrange some coffee cups and candy bars that are for sale at the counter, and sometimes take a turn cleaning the bathroom.

It is rare indeed to post the pay rate in this sort of ad. I wish people did that, but they don't, so you can hardly fault Ballard Mailing for following the herd.

I was thinking the same thing, Angeline. iPlod too. It's a small office so probably a variety of tasks are required including (gasp) maybe making coffee. The art of being a team player is somewhat lost and I think they are looking for attitude more than actual skills. Skills can be taught. It's a local company (seems like a decent company) looking to hire. Why go all snarky on them?

Ballard Mailbox is a good company. I had a mailbox there many years ago and often mail packages from the store and enjoyed the friendly service. They are a local company is involved with the local people and they support the local community, so let us support them. All they are doing here on the forum is trying to hire a local person to work in the store.

  8. I critiqued their want ad. That has nothing to do with wether or not they are a good company, and it doesn't seem like anyone here would even know if they were a good company to work for. One of the biggest issues leading to job dissatisfaction is unclear responsibilities.

I get the impression it's not a career (probably?) but more of a part time job while going to school or maybe just to supplement another income. Probably responsibilities (along with pay) would be discussed during the interview or by e-mail. Job responsibilities sound like they'll be whatever needs to be done and in return, the company (which sounds wonderful) will accommodate school or personal schedules. There aren't many companies like that anymore, it's unfortunate.

I'm also pretty sure the job responsibilities would be clear before hiring therefore if the person was unhappy with the responsibilities, they could choose to not accept the job.

I'm blown away by the criticism. I hope they are looking at this thread and laughing. I also hope that the right person makes their way to the job opening.

racerx, yeah I thought that right after I typed it. There are genuine and helpful posts though that should be immune to it all and the OPs post is one of them.

I'm assuming their ideal applicant has enough intelligence to figure out what a customer service position at a pack and ship would involve. Or if they'd never encountered a pack and ship, they'd be resourceful enough to email them to ask for clarification.

"Hire for attitude, train for experience" is the mantra.

However, you need to be an experienced, competent & compassionate trainer to make that mantra work for the benefit of everybody, customers included.

I'm delighted to see a local business posting an open job here. I'm sad to see them jumped on by armchair critics, however. I usually hold my tongue, but when someone gets criticism simply by posting about an open job...sigh.

Hope you find someone great for the job, Ballard Mailbox. I have always encountered helpful and kind people when coming in to mail stuff.

  17. We are looking, and laughing... :) We are a very locally dedicated company that has been in the Ballard neighborhood for over 30 years. Our intentions of posting in a local, community forum was to attract applicants that share that same value and live in the area. Thanks to those of you supporting our business and understanding what we're all about. Those of you who couldn't help but be negative... good luck on improving your outlook on life and please do not apply.

I've got about 4 years recent experience stocking shelves at a grocery store. My job duties included facing the aisles to make the shelves appear fully stocked...replacing items from the back when the shelves were empty. Mopping.

You really should hire stopgo if you need your carpets mopped.
