Chopper, please show up early at the judges table (about 2:15 or so if you can) to go over the judging criteria.

Thanks to everyone who is helping out, and all of our fabulous sponsors!

Sounds like fun, but how are you going to know if a dog is from Ballard or not?? Also if by happenstance someone is out and about in Ballard with their pup and they stop by, what are you going to do??? Kick them out??? I would hope not, I wouldn't want to give the impression that Ballardites are exclusive and unfriendly.

Looks like that's explained in the Ballard News Tribune article, MissK.
Do you have all five judges, Jules? Just curious, I'm not volunteering (I would if it were a cat show, but what do I know from dogs?).

    Jules,

Are you going to have the Geeky Swedes plug it on the front page?

Thanks for organizing, should be fun!

Hey Jules, how will this work. Do we enter our dog in specific categories during registration. Thanks for organizing. It sounds like a lot of fun. How about a category for Most Recently Adopted from a Shelter?

Underpants Gnome; you don't have to enter your dog in any category, JUST SHOW UP. You'll get a number, and we'll announce winners. Only categories where we have to see them all in one place (ie: Longest Weinger dog or something like that) will we announce over the PA what to do.

Well, that could be a great category!

I'm hoping the Geeky Swedes will move the event and poster to the front page when it gets closer to the date.

Lakreitz, I need it by about 2:30 the day of the event, so if you want to just come down early, that would be fine OR I can get it from you beforehand. Please write your name on some tape on the back so you get it back!

With all this advertising of the event....you might get a person and their dog from...eeek Shoreline. If you wanted it exclusive the less advertising the better. I guess I don't agree with the exclusitivity of it all. At first I was excited and was going to invite my brother and his pup (non Ballardites.) But once I saw that it was ONLY for Ballard peeps, I was dismayed.

Miss K- the reason we didn't put it in the Seattle Times, for example, is that we wanted it for the neighborhood. All the sponsors are local....and this isn't Seafoodfest. Miss K, since YOU are from Ballard, then you can bring along your brother and his pup...and you can enter the pup. Also, anyone with a business in Ballard (who may or may not live here) is welcome to show up. One of the reasons that the local merchants were so extraordinarily generous (in a recession!)was that is is a local event. Since the two zip codes include over 50,000 people, I'd say we can safely say one-quarter of them have a dog...how many will show up is anyone's guess. This is intended to be a neighborhood event; not a city-wide event. We have to draw the line somwwhere.

Now, we're not going to be too Draconian about this. We have 200 goodie bags and about 100 prizes. If for any reason there are left over goodie bags, we'll take those to a dog shelter. Since we are not doing advance registration, we have no idea how many people to expect but my hope is that EVERYONE will go home with something.

Hey Jules...may be a little later than 4:30 today, just FYI. Kinda busy at work today, may not get out on time, but I will have the leashes in tow! :)

I can bring my own clipboard, if I borrow the one I have at work for the weekend. Is that cool?

PS Miss K- all the advertising says it is for Ballardites. It was only advertised in Ballard.

When I was a tiny child (and the earth's surface was still cooloing) I remember my mom (who was the PTA president at the time) helped out with two Easter egg hunts- one at Golden Gardens, one at Loyal Heights. My brother & sister and I went...and kids were trucked in from all over town for this event. None of us got a single egg...and were very dissappointed...and never forgot it.

I don't want a repeat performance of those events. I intend that EVERY kid who shows up at this event with a dog FROM BALLARD goes home with something. My hope is that everyone who shows up, will in fact, go home with something.

    We have:
    200 goodie bags
    95 prizes
    @100 tennis balls.

We should be able to ensure that no one goes home empty handed.

(BTW, many, many thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors...and to two of our judges, who, with me, stayed up late last night packaging up all the goodie bags. These ladies deserve a plaque,a cash award, and a free beer.Oddly, all three of us are canine-companion free ata the moment.)

Will show up early on Sunday. I checked my basement and I have two, so will bring both. Need any Sharpie marking pens, tape, a folding table or chairs?

We've met BTW - a few months ago over at the UVillage in the furniture store.

I have a few tennis balls too.

Aha! Lakerietz, a your clipboards, a couple sharpies, some tape (duct tape?) would be good. Parks & Rec is bringing the tables, chairs, tents, and PA system. We are in fact, donating all the leftover bags (about 200) to the Ballard Commmunity center for them to use for their programs.I'm also bringing a ton of plastic bags for any ...accidents.

IF anyone of the strong and burly variety would like to come and help with "Security" I'd appreciate it. Strictly speaking, we just want to ensure that
    1. no one walks off with the prizes and
    2. any disruptive "elements" are politely asked to leave...by that I mean mainly the couple with the pit bull, who will see this as a golden opportunity to panhandle and generally make a nuisance of themselves, and any of the local homeless engaging in any anti-social behavior. This is a safe, family-friendly evemt; small children do not need to be exposed to this. It's only for 2 hours, anyway.

Is there a drinking fountain at the park? If there is, it might be nice to have a container of some sort for the dogs to drink out of if it's hot.

This is going to be so fun! FYI - the spray fountain water has a bunch of chlorine and bleach added to it. I just found that out yesterday, and could definitely smell it once I realized it was in there. (Yikes, puppy had been drinking that every time we went through up until yesterday!) Just a word of warning for people like me who didn't realize.

If people had bowls they could bring that would be great - or better yet big buckets that wouldn't get knocked over. I think we have a home depot bucket, if I can find it we'll bring it.

Jules, if you want any more help please let me know! myballardsammy@gmail.com

That's cool you got all those tennis balls. Maybe if the dogs play with them there we could swap before bringing them home. For some reason he loves toys that another dog has already played with, maybe just the extra scent on them, who knows?

That's why cat shows are done differently, Chopper. We don't show our cats, we simply play with them in front of an audience. ;-)
I have a metal water bowl I've had outside for walking doggies and wandering kitties, I can bring that.
See ya all at the dogie show!

Mine would enter, Nora Bell, as long as they don't have to show up (telecompete?). The nap schedule must NOT be compromised, or interrupted in any way! But perhaps we could do a kitty photo contest.

I think I have at least one clipboard that I can borrow; I'll bring however many we can get our hands on. I'll try to remember to bring some Sharpies, too, as well as extra pens for the sign-up table.

The tennis balls that we're contributing have only been touched by my DH and his tennis partner, so hopefully Penny won't object to them too much. Is she an Australian Shepherd?

Hah! Cats do NOT nnjoy the company of other, strange cats and they are not "pack" animals. They enjoy strange cats about about as much as they do a long soaking bubble bath.

Of course, my cat would win Prettiest Calico.

Jules - Your extra bags for 'accidents' reminds me that at the shelter's Furry 5K each year, there are never enough big garbage cans to take the stuff that is collected and bagged. Should I bring a 55 gallon can with liner so that we don't overwhelm the park's trash bins?

Jules - Cats aren't pack animals but they are social. It's just if two males are together you have problems, especially if one or both aren't fixed. But if you have a fixed male and a fixed female they actually enjoy each other's company. It gives them some one to play with if I'm not here to toss fur mice for them.
Anyway, enough with the cat show. I'm sorry I even brought it up. See ya all with the dogs. :-)

Before I offered I considered eventual disposal, realizing it could be me. But, the memory of good dog owners at the Furry 5K scrambling to find a trash can overrode my common sense.
