Need to clear some space on your bookshelves?

Spouse grumbling about the piles of books on your floor?

Let your neighbors access your excess!

Bring a bag of books to a bar and trade/sell/give them away!

Where? A Ballard Bar (to be decided)
When? A Tuesday evening (to be decided)

Brought to you by Ballard Books & Booze, a non-existent nonprofit.

It's... it's like you have cameras in my house! How did you know?! ;)

Aster, maybe? Or KISS Cafe? Old Town? Somewhere that'd be kind of quiet on a Tuesday....

Forewarning: I'm a giant nerd with a giant nerd's literary tastes.

Fabulous idea!! And *this* spouse has been grumbling to dear hubby. Just this past weekend as he was attempting to buy more books, I gently reminded him he does have a library card...

Conor Byrne's might be more roomy than Old Town on a Tuesday. But I'll go to any Ballard bar with my mountain of old books. I also should cop to having a nerd's collection, though.

Yes, Michael, you can donate them to the library. But as someone who worked 15 years for the Seattle Public Library, I can tell you that they probably won't end up on a library shelf. The cost of prepping a non-library book to go into the collection is almost more than buying one new! The library buys it's books from special library suppliers.

If you choose to donate your books to the library, just be aware that the vast majority will end up at their (semi?) annual book sale. Not that I have any objection to that!

    Ballard Books & Booze: Timing

How does Tuesday, September 1st, work for everybody?

I'm thinking 7pm so people can eat dinner first, if they want.

    Your thoughts?

Should check to see if conor byrne has a event that night. So people wont have to pay a cover to get in.

    CB's website says this:

Tuesday September 1 - Ol' Time Social, hosted by members of the Tallboys.

Perhaps I should give the manager a call?

Sept. 1st @ 7 is perfect for me. If Conor Byrne's has a cover for the Tallboys thing is there an alternative venue? The only other place I can think of with that much space is the Smokeshop. They're really good about allowing events but they might be a little too divey for some.

I'm in. My preferences are a relatively quiet venue (read: the ability to have a convo without yelling) and sells hard liquor and isn't just for high rollers. Of course, majority rules. :)

I don't mind divey because the MyBallard group will make their own culture. Heavily divey just means free entertainment!

If CB doesn't work out -- what about the People's Pub front room? I'm not sure how that is on Tuesdays, but seem like they have the space & quiet & beer.

Donkey balls, indeed, Phoo and Chopper! And I may need to borrow that phrase on occasion, Phoo. :-)
And, Ballard Dad, as the daughter of a former music teacher I salute you, Sir.
The front area of People's Pub might be big and quiet enough. And German beer. Win, win.

I second the suggestion of the People's Pub. There are good size tables there and beer is great! Just be clear, the idea to swap/sells out books to each other while drink and be merry? What could be finer? Sounds fabulous!

    The Peoples have spoken.

The People's Pub sounds like it has the environment we need for Ballard Books & Booze.

How *do* you people keep coming up with places in Ballard that I've never been to?

Anyway, the PP has this to say about Tuesdays at their establishment:

"TUESDAY- Small Batch Bourbon, $1.00 off." I don't know what this "bourbon" thing is, but it sounds like it would go well with books.

Phoo, Chopper and Ballard Dad - we should make sure that the next BB&B is scheduled so that you can all attend. In the meantime, there is the Post Pooch Pubcrawl (PPP?) on the 23rd, right?

Yes, XL, that is exactly the idea. ;-)

Happy Hour at the People's Pub is from 3-7pm. Should we shift our start time to take advantage of that?

Chopper, that is probably the least offensive of my "colourful phrases." If we ever get a Tuesday where we're both free, I'll introduce you to some of my other internet sailor phrases. :D

I suspect that there will be other MyBallard events. 8x10 photo swap? Weird Diet cookoff? Technical book swap? Pimp my shoes?

Yeah, bourbon goes well if anyone has any Dashiel Hammett.

I am definitely interested. Thanks for getting this started Silver! It would be nice to shift the time earlier to take advantage of happy hour. Maybe 5:30? I imagine people will be milling around for a while so people who can only come later will still catch people.

What an awesome idea ! One (or even two) of us may be there. Now...what books from the many to bring ??

We tried to sell on Amazon but no takers. We keep buying more bookshelves.....
I am trying to train myself to use the library more...really, I am trying.

Ballard Dad...(or anyone who can't make it) don't want to you to go without !! Anything in particular you looking for...a favorite author ? We have so many
paperback and some hard cover by

    David Baldacci
    Janet Evanovich
    Patricia Cornwall
    G.M. Ford Kellerman
    J.A. Jance
    Nevada Barr, etc. etc

I just finished hard cover "firefly lane" by Kristin Hannah, paperback of "Songs In Ordinary Time" by Mary McGarry Morris and Amy and David Goodman's "Standing Up To The Madness"...

I'll be there. I don't think there's a cover for The Tallboys at CB. Depends on time you go, too.

Chopper - Don't get me started on the swearing thing...I already sound like a sailor. You'll find out Sunday. hahhahaha

Silver - Yes, please adjust the time to be a little earlier. I work at 7am, so 7pm I am in my jammies in front of the couch!!! :)

did the last one go over well? was it worth it? were you indeed able to get rid of books and make a bit of beer $$ at the same time?
