Is there somewhere in Ballard, or elsewhere in Seattle, that collects recycled wine corks? Was there an article about a park that was taking recycled cork? I am not able to find it online now when searching...

Whole Foods on Roosevelt has a recycle bin for wine corks.

Thanks Zeef ! I will check it out. Maybe the new Whole Foods in the Interbay area will have one also.

I collect wine corks - not the synthetics. Then I recycle into bulletin boards, and I have taught a wine cork recycling class through Seattle Free School and am tenatively planning another for the first week of December at the Cascade Peoples Center. What kind of quantaties are you talking about?

My mom's neighbor, Vince, collects natural/wood corks for a walkway project he's been working on. Really... he's gonna need a lot. The Ballard News Tribune featured an article on him this summer. http://www.ballardnewstribune.com/2009/07/02/features/large-ballard-uncork-it
He's on the corner of 75th & 22th, kitty corner from the SW Loyal Heights Community Center playfield. I know he would appreciate them, a handful or a bagful, whatever you can share. And it's such a cool idea.Posted 3 years ago # -
I just have one bag....been saving them for a couple years. They would probably fill a gallon and a half if placed in empty milk jugs. I am fairly certain all are real cork.
cc if you want them I can drop them off for you. If not,I will donate them to Vince.
Thanks for the post BallardPride...that was indeed the article I was looking for.Posted 3 years ago # -
Give them to Vince. Sounds cool.
But if you have more in the future, I will be around.Posted 3 years ago # -
Ok, so there's an article to back up BallardPride's suggestion...but I'm picturing an unsuspecting Vince coming out to his yard to find a bunch of corks. The next day, a bunch more. Then a handful in the mailbox. A couple of days later, a few bags of them.
"WTF?" Vince asks himself.

cc...I have about 40 corks that I was going to toss over Vince's fence tomorrow.
Are you still collecting corks for your work and teaching ?Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm so glad you bumped this post up. I hadn't seen it before and will start saving my corks for Vince and ask friends to do the same. Very cool!

Hey there 44. Still collecting but haven't planned any holiday classes this year. Is Vince still working on his walkway?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Just imagine how many you could get from a wine bar!!! If you ask they might save them for you...
Posted 2 years ago # -
cc..yes, I think he is. I didn't make it out today (busy in another pre-holidays de-clutter mode) but plan to head over to Vince's this week.I haven't dumped corks off there for a year now so *hopefully* he is still receiving them.
I like collecting corks....I don't why...I don't have any use for them but to keep them out of the landfill.
SeattleRichardson....yes, a wine bar would have a lot and it makes me wonder what the local wine bars do with their corks ?

Wow... recycled wine corks. That's rich, that's rich.

I'm concerned about the superheated C02 I've been exhaling my for almost 52 years now, how does that get recycled?
And corks, are we talkin' plastic or corkic?

CO2 is used by plants in photosynthesis. Pretty cool. Wikipedia explains it pretty well.

Yeah, I've heard about that too, but I always considered that a commie plot.

I am collecting them also to make a much-needed anti-fatigue mat for my kitchen. If anyone else has a number of them, I would really welcome them!
Posted 2 years ago # -
SmartsyArtsy, that sounds like a cool idea! I could certainly use one of those myself. How are you planning on putting the mat together? Do you have a pattern of some sort that you might be willing to share?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hi Fliegenpilz, I just noticed your post. I have a concept of how to produce a mat but I usually learn a better way to do things when I start to put a plan in action. So, things may change, but my plan is to
1. Cut them in half and use the larger half (cut is horizontal), putting the smaller halves aside.
2. Drill two holes through it, again, horizontally, forming "paths" for joining them maybe 1/3 down for path1 and 2/3 down (path2) perpendicular to path1
3. Gorilla glue them side to side
4. Run something-hemp?vinyl cording? through them in 2 directions ( path 1 & 2 )
5. Maybe use the smaller halves as a border which might make sense as a gradual slope to the flooring.I haven't decided on the size, but it will be a simple rectangle
Think about finishing choices: leave as is, paint or just tint with oxides, what else?Posted 2 years ago # -
We put them in the food processor and mix them with our granola.
