    Hi Everyone

Wanted to put a warning out there to all of you about the walk up BofA ATM on 57th. You know, the one that's connected to the drive-thru?

My ATM Card number and PIN were stolen at that ATM (Bank suspects a card reader) and money withdrawn from both my checking and savings account.

The bank is working to resolve my personal account but told me they've had others report the same so they are investigating.
So my suggestion would be to stay away from that particular ATM and use the ATM on market or better yet, go inside the bank if you don't have the time to find another BofA ATM.

Thanks for the alert. I have used this ATM before and will stop using it now.

Thanks for posting this. My account was also compromised, I received a call yesterday. I have to wait for a new bank card, but apparently I do not need to close this account. I had to close my account a few years back due to a mass compromise some BOA customers may remember.

I assume this is where my account was compromised, I almost used this ATM exclusively. I now know... I used it last on 11/10, and 10/20 before that.

Ack! We use that regularly. I hope this gets posted on the main website.

When you tried to use, I assume you were able to get cash out even with the reader there?

Anyone reading this who has used this ATM should get a new PIN and card regardless of whether they have been victimized yet. The thieves could have more card and PIN data and be waiting to use it later. An ATM in Enumclaw had a card reader in it for a short time early in the year. The thieves waited several months until a three day weekend to strike, when the likelihood of bank accounts being monitored by their owners was the lowest. A lot of people lost money on that one - so much that the local rags reported on it. This forum is the first I've heard of the BofA incident in Ballard.

I am a Boeing Employee CU member. BECU is in the process of upgrading all their ATMs to the type that has a green light flashing around the card reader. If not flashing, then there is a problem. These are the only ATMs that I use now.

Thanks for the warning! I use that ATM often enough that I'm going to get a new card.

Anyone hear about similar problems at other local ATM's?

Yes I noticed absolutely nothing different about the behavior of the ATM when I used it.
I think it happened when I last made a deposit there and withdrew about $100 about 3 weeks ago.
the fraudulent withdrawl(s) happened on 11/29.

It's crazy because they tell you in order to avoid these readers that you should use your bank's ATM exclusively - guess they were wrong.

I suggest going as far as to ask the bank to replace your current ATM card and get a new PIN, ASAP.
I am just thankful that the bank has limits for withdrawls, otherwise they would have drained me!

I had $500 fraudulently withdrawn from my account (the thief used an ATM in Shoreline) on 11/24. Luckily BofA called me right away and took care of the problem, but they could not explain what had happened. I use the ATM on 56th all the time and am wondering if I was a victim of the card reader too. Scary.

If you are concerned, call BoA and ask them to put a hold on your account until you can get to the branch to change your pin number.

    Kelli!

I had the same amount swithdrawn from both my checking AND my savings = $1000.
While I know it is most likely the withdrawl threshold they impose that makes our amounts the same, the situation is too similar for comfort - - wow so it's not just Ballard then. Scary.

I guess I should clarify, I wasn’t told I was part of this breach, but only that I was part of a “mass compromise”. But I almost exclusively use this ATM for deposits and withdrawals. Once, in the last couple of months… I walked up to the drive thru part since the walk up ATM was being used. So if there was a skimmer, I don’t know which part had it.

I consider myself very observant and tech-savvy… so I am having a hard time believing I didn’t notice anything weird about the ATM.

To those of you still following this story, here’s an update…

I was told I was part of this “mass compromise” and that there was a “restriction or hold” on my ATM card, but I could keep my account open, I just would have to wait for a new card/number in the mail.

Today my new card came. It was the exact same card/number as the “compromised” card. I called and went on hold for ages, (for the second time). I was told the hold was never placed on my card, and so not only do I need to wait another 3-5 days for a new card… I guess the crooks could have potentially taken my money, since the hold was either taken off or was never there to begin with.

    WTF???

Identity theft comes in many forms, but one of the most common types, and also, one of the most destructive, is ATM fraud. We may think we have protected our self from ATM fraud, but the reality is, there are so many ways in which an identity theft can steal our details and therefore commit this type of fraud, that we may not have protected our self against every eventuality. Good to more about it.

Wow. I can't believe BoA hasn't done anything about this yet. A friend of my husband's and one of his family members had their accounts drained over year ago after using that ATM.

So be careful and check your account as it may not be just recent activity at that ATM.
