My kitty is in desperate need of a teeth cleaning, I just called the vet we had been seeing (Phinney Ridge Animal Hospital) and was quoted $375 plus a $50 office visit. Does anyone know if this is the going rate? Does anyone have any recommendations to a more reasonably priced vet? I was a bit shocked, I don't even think my dental appointments cost that much.

That seems about right. I was quoted around that much by Cats Exclusive in Shoreline for my cat. It's expensive. Even for my own teeth without dental insurance it was around $120.00. (I exhausted it when I had my wisdom teeth pulled.)

That sounds like a lot but I've never had a cat's teeth cleaned. WebMD has a pet health section with a link for looking for a vet. Maybe call around and compare?

That price sounds pretty standard. Unlike people, cats have to be completely anesthetized for teeth cleaning and that's where a lot of the expense comes in. Their jaws and teeth are very fragile and easily broken so it's more of a delicate operation than what us humans are used to. If the vet ends up having to extract diseased or rotten teeth, it will be even more expensive. Have you been told by a vet that your cat's teeth need cleaning? if it's just tartar they may be able to hand-scale it off (much easier, less expensive).

I believe the family pet is more like 300. Kitty has been there twice to get her teeth cleaned.

I have had to get my cats teeth cleaned every couple of years, the first vet that I had said that this cats teeth are just bad. The last time I had their teeth cleaned when I lived in California I remember it being around $200 total. I initally thought that maybe prices have just increased the 3 years since I had it done last but I just called my old vet and they quoted me $150.

$300.00 is what we pay before pre and post exams. Anything other than just cleaning and you can expect to pay a couple of hundred dollars more. It's expensive, necessary for the quality of any pet's life. I amoratize it in my mind to spread out over the life of my animals. My last five cats each lived long, long lives. My current cat is 14, had his last cleaning in February. Crown Hill does a yearly discount price for cats and dogs dental work. Might call them--we really like the vet that specializes in dental surgery. Ask for him.

For your senior pets, etc, Downtown Dog Lounge (on Elliott) has a service where your pet is totally awake the whole time. They use like ultrasound or such. It's two technicians. They first interact with your pet to get them at ease. Then they sit on the floor while they do the procedure. Less stress especially for the senior or have some medical condition. Might be worth giving them a call.

I think that price is pretty standard. We were quoted a similar price not too long ago.

We ended up not paying for it, but I sometimes wonder if I could just do it myself with a little patience. We already have dog toothpaste (which I believe is for cats & dogs) and our cat isn't the swatting kind, she's more of a squirmer. She already puts up with allergen baths, so I might be able to get a couple quick strokes in.

I'd rather be kicked repeatedly in the head than try to clean the cat's teeth. We take her to Cat's Exclusive out on Aurora, and have her nails trimmed at the same time. (yet another job that is too perilous for an amateur to do at home; at least on our cat.I might lose something I might need later; like an eye.) $300 is pretty standard, since they have to anesthetize the cat. BTW, the cat is 20 years old and in great shape, thanks a lot in part to Dr. Lester at Cat's Exclusive. We started taking her there instead of the local dog/cat vet, because it was so stressful for her to be in the waiting room etc. with dogs. Just smelling the dogs stresses her out.(after the 2nd time a dog owner let their dog (on a retractable leash) go up and sniff her cage, sending the cat into low-earth orbit)(Note: I am a dog-lover myself, but I wish people would be a bit more respectful at the vet's office; I don't care if your dog is "just curious"...my cat is wigging out. Thank you. )

I guess I'll suck it up and pay the $300. I think I'll give Cat's Exclusive a try, I've heard multiple people say good things about them. My cats aren't the swatting kind either, I can handle the nail trims and baths but I'm talking about the deep down scrap the tartar off kind of cleaning. However I know if I got in the habit of brushing their teeth every day I could delay the deep cleaning but I'd prefer not to do something to them that they hate every single day.

PLEASE do NOT try the Shoreline Dental Vet Clinic (on Aurora, a bit south I think of Cats Exclusive). They bill themselves as "the" place for dental work on cats in the Seattle area, but as a result of both their carelessness & lack of communication, our baby ended up blind, epileptic & brain-damaged. She had a reaction to the anesthesia (which they gave her despite having abnormal reactions to the tests we paid extra for BEFOREHAND, to determine if it was safe to do...) but worse than that, they never bothered to call & tell us what had happened - they just waited for us to call about picking her up, and then said, "oh, yeah, about that..." They have NEVER apologized, never paid one penny towards the thousands we had to spend in emergency care the same day to save her life - they didn't even have the decency to transport her to the ER themselves. Hours & hours were wasted & she'll never be the same. I was in the middle of suing them when I had serious pregnancy complications & had to just let it go for my own sake. I would never let Dr. Dupont or Dr. DeBowes near an animal I cared about again...
