Man, Ballard so sucks what with mean motorists, folks who can't spell Capitol Hill 'cause they're too smashed on cocktails, batty bicyclists and now dippity dogs at the Ballard Market--I've had enough, yer all poo-poo heads so I'M MOVIN' TO CANADA. AND TAKIN' HILDA WITH ME. AND MY ALLCAPS KEY.

TumTum - Good article actually. I think, as some have pointed out, a companion animal is very different than a edible animal. The prospect of eating my beloved and spoiled cats is nauseating.
As to the dogs at the market, it's all about being good owners. If they do good for their dogs, their dogs will do good for them. I've seen people walking their dogs who hurry along, pulling the dogs behind, not letting the dogs stop to do their business. That annoys the heck out of me. Like the walk is just to get from point A to point B, not to let the dog do what it needs to do. I don't even care if you pick up after him (though that would be lovely) but let them do what they need to do.

I have owned them and will own again the future. When I go out I leave them at home. Dog parks and walks around the neighborhood are what I consider appropriate. But that's just me. This is nothing more than an opinion. I just don't understand the need to force them on other people, which is what a lot of dog owners do.

My point is that there is a time and place. Mixed crowds are not it.

I'm with ya Jonathan!! Stoopid Peepull! You know cats would be at the market too if they even cared about what their owners wanted to do outside the house.

Sorry go off-topic, especially to a tired topic, but Jules, I'm really surprised to hear a dog-savvy person like you say you'd support a breed ban. There's a lot of evidence to show they don't work. http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/dog-bites/dog-bites-worldwide/ But if a pit bull ban passes I guess they can count on your help to rehome or euthanize all the displaced pets?

I don't think the dogs are anywhere near as annoying or as rude as the new parents with their SUV sized strollers. People in general are only aware of their own space, if that. And no I don't hate parents or babies. But over sized cunsumer products with selfish drives, hell yes.

I almost always swing through the market when I'm out walking my pooch on Sundays. It's true there are a lot of smells and when it's crowded it can be a right challenge keeping him at my heel, but it's one of the few places dogs and their owners can socialize. It would be fun to see a "Yappy Hour" at a local café/bar when the market closes at 15.00, by the way - are there any going in the area?

Yappy Hour!?! I don't even have a pet and I like that idea. Maybe a Whiskers and Whiskey hour for the cats.

  10. In theory, I would support a ban on Pit Bulls mainly because the shelters are absolutely CHOCK FULL of them. Not many people want a discarded Pit. As they say, it's the owner, not the dog, but with an abandoned one, you have no idea what might have been done to the poor thing, and what little thing might set it off. Living a live in a shelter is a cruel life, and many dogs go crazy in one way or another from it if left there long enough.

I have a friend who has a wonderful, sweet Pit... and I was also chased on top of a car by some truly blood thirsty ones that had to be shot to make them stop attacking. I don't blame the breed nearly so much as the breeders and owners, though as much as my Jack Russell may want to kill me, unless I laid down and let him gnaw on my neck for 15 minutes, he'd never be able to, unlike a Pit.

Perhaps something like the laws around Ferrets could be enacted. All Pits are sterilized at birth unless you pay extra and register as a breeder. That would control the population, keep the incident of unwanted dogs lower, and raise the price, perhaps forcing people to put more thought into their decision. Also the gang members and felons who use them for protection and intimidation might not find a gelded dog so appealing. (This happens down in LA, perhaps not so much up here) Not allowing Felons to own a Pit might removes some of the appeal as well. It's illegal for them to carry a gun, but not a dog trained to attack, so it's become a tough guy thing to own one in some circles. Poor things.

I second the oversize, SUV-style "stroller" being as annoying or more than the folks that meander w/o looking where they are going! WOOF!

Guilty as charged on both the stroller and dog counts. Although, I don't think our stroller was very big. In fact, its quite small. Anyway, the stroller has been outgrown so I guess I won't be pissing anybody off with that one anymore. But I'm going to continue bringing both my daughter and my dog to the market no matter what anybody posts here. I appreciate people having the forum to vent about peeves, but I'll be turning a blind eye.

Yes, I do support a pit bull breed ban. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

Jules did you also support the doberman, german shepherd, rottweiler, mastiff, shiba, akita and chow banning movements.

It is not the dog, it is the human pieces of trash that decide what their "Bad ass" breed of the month is.

Do nothing to the dogs, but educate dog owners, children and the elderly, enact strong criminal laws prohibiting dangerous behavior on the part of dog owners, and gather more information about the problem.

I'm betting most of you can't even find the Pitbull on the following webpage

my SUV sized stroller has enough flashing lights on it for you to see me coming from a mile away. If you haven't moved by then, you're out of luck. =)

Hey Mongo, I picked the pit bull the first time. Not that hard. And I used to own a German Shepherd. It's mainly the owners, I agree.
