Perhaps fencing is the answer (no not buying/selling stolen goods -- nor I am I suggesting running them thru with my steel). Convert one side to a little off-leash dog park. Fence another side off for the kiddies so parents don't have to worry about them running into the street or getting nabbed. I suspect that people who aren't so well intentioned would be less likely to cross a hard fence line, and if there are people undertaking more nefarious activities they wouldn't want to be stuck without a good line of escape should an authority figure show up.

I'm certain that I've seen drug deals/use occur behind that electrical box. Generally the non-skater kids and the older bums. One way or another you've got to get rid of good hiding spots in public places. Unfortunately the comfort level of Ballard Commons, combined with a bit of secluded space & wide open access makes a perfect combo for undesirables.

It won't be secluded for long. I have speculated in other posts that this activity will find a new home once the QFC opens and the apartments are occupied.

Yeah, I have a hard time seeing the QFC management putting up with that for long. I wonder where they will go next, though?

Enough calls to the police and they'll have to do something. When you see something, report it. I'm not just talking about the bums either. Seattle Police aren't really set up to regularly patrol, but rather to be a response when called and an emphasis in areas that have repeated problems. The more calls about the park, the more attention it will get to solve the problem.

To the devil's advocate earlier...I get that the homeless don't have homes so that any drinking becomes public drinking, but for the most part the homeless that are drinking are the drunken bums, and not the "down on their luck" homeless types who want to have a single beer every now and then.
There's quite a bit of services intended to get people off the streets and into stable housing, but the people we are having problems with have no interest in that. They're out there in the park drinking and fighting because at some point the drinking became more important than the rest of their responsibilities and now the addiction is keeping them down.

To the comment about the Pit Bull's jaw being able to lock... Not true. The jaw of the Pit Bull is no different than any other breed except that it is stronger than many other dogs so it would be harder to pry the dog off, but then again if you've ever had to pry any large dog off of something you'd realize that it's difficult no matter what the breed.

Maybe the Geeky Swedes can help us get the word out and we can start a “take back the park” movement...
