Fire is responding to reports of an accident at 15th Ave West & West Ruffner. This is south of the cloverleaf that is south of the Ballard Bridge.

Lots of accidents being reported all over the city right now. Keep a safe following distance and expect the other drivers to do stupid things!

I heard engine 20 say that they would need at least one backboard. That doesn't sound good.

Can anyone advise if this is in the North or Southbound lanes?

This is in the far left lane going North. I must've gotten there minutes after as I was reaching just as the first fire truck got there. I think there were 4 or 5 cars involved, 2 or 3 were pretty crunched :(. Hope everyone is okay.

Silver. Are we going to have to organize an intervention on your scanner habit? Can you go 3 days without turning on the scanner? Be honest with yourself if you may need help. It is a slippery slope madam.

It's not a scanner habit, motormouth....er, so sorry.....motorrad ;). It's a public service. Jeez, we have a 300 mile drive south tomorrow. Sounds to me as if we may not make it past the north end of the Ballard Bridge.

Mr. Motorrad, I appreciate your concern.

I do admit to turning on the scanner first thing in the morning, to wake up.

I do not usually hide my scanning behavior.

    I do sometimes listen alone.

My scanner monitoring does sometimes cause friction with my loved ones.

I sometimes can't remember what I did while I was listening to the scanner.

I tend not to shower, or shave my toes when listening to the scanner.

I can quit listening anytime I want. I just don't want to.

Do you think I have a problem?

The first step is admitting you have a problem. :-)
Her scanner habit keeps us informed and entertained, anyway.

As long as you have it under control. The shaving toes is borderline TMI.

I was walking a baby and ran away.

Silver-I have been fighting the urge to get a scanner for years. I know I will be addicted and it will take over my life. I would justify it by saying that it is for my photography but I know it is more. That said, is there a decent unit that runs on batteries or by plugging in to a car?

There are a lot of variables with scanners. If *I* designed them, they would be MUCH easier to use. ;-)

It sounds like what you want is a "Handheld Trunking Scanner" and that phrase can be used as your search phrase. Amazon has some, as does Radio Shack. Start reading reviews and asking around. Maybe get the folks at Radio Shack to show you how they work?

I've asked for a handheld for X-mas. After the recent power outage I knew I would go crazy without a battery operated scanner in an outage. ;-)

I'm happy to chat with anyone who gets a scanner. I'm not a professional by any means, but I'll do what I can!

I can just imagine you with head in hands, weeping during the blackout, knowing there were things going on that you knew nothing about. It must have been horrible. Just shaving your toes by candlelight and a bottle.

Where I grew up it was illegal to have a scanner in your car. But when I am out and about with my cameras is when I really want one. I wonder if it is OK to have one on in a vehicle in Seattle.

    Shaving your toes?! OH.MY.GOD.

That's by far the funniest thing I've read all day :) Thanks for that!

Motorrad - I'm shutting my curtains right NOW.

I don't know if portable scanners are legal to have with you in a car in Washington State. My understanding is that it is a state-by-state thing. I'm guessing that it isn't really enforced much. Suppose I ought to look it up though, huh.

Getting back to the original subject of this thread. I happened to drive by and there were two cars there, crunched pretty badly, and the worst - a small motorcycle down.
I know this is from yesterday but just logged on today.

did my 'walking the baby' reference go over heads or was it so obvious it was stupid? Or just obviously stupid. Cracked myself up for awhile.

(shrug) I got it. It was 'spit take' funny. But if I commented on every post that caused me to wipe down my keyboard you people would get more tired of me than you already are. :-)

Just for some scanner law clarification....
I struck up a conversation once with a King County Sheriff's Deputy who noticed I was listening to a scanner with headphones at a coffee shop (not a regular thing for me...well the coffee is...just not the uber scanner nerd out in public role...but whatev...
So anyway he told me that as long as the scanner is not being used during the commission of a crime its perfectly legal to use it whenever and wherever. So if you are speeding down the highway and get pulled over and theres a police scanner sitting in your lap you'll likely get cited.

So Silver, Would scanning be as enjoyable with headphones out in a public area drinking warm or cold beverages, posting on wifi from a laptop? Or is it better alone in your personal cocoon?

8o86-Thanks for the info. But if you did it once in public, I find it hard to believe you wouldn't again.

8086Child - is your pseudonym a reference to a family of microchips?

And they call me a geek!

I've informed my family that I want a metal detector for my 60th birthday.

    I'm shameless.

I can't remember where, but I thought I read in some profile of
you that you collect office machines. I have an adding machine
that you can have, if you want it. Nothing fancy, but it works.
If so, let me know how I can contact you.
