I am now throwing metaphorical brussels sprouts at you. There's got to be a better use for them than using them as food.

Kohi, thank you for spelling those little bastards correctly (please don't take offense, Allison).

Poor Brussels...I have no idea why such a stinky vegetable would be named after it.

Kohi did you happen to eat a lot of paint chips as a child?

If not paint chips, perhaps licking rusty vents? If I could package my Fatty Monster's stinky boy farts into a little bag and painted them green, I could probably market them (read: pass them off) as a calorie-free substitute for this nasty little vegetable. They certainly would smell the same (Nanuq's farts may be better ... actually, I'm certain they are).

Roasted brussels sprouts are really good. A great popcorn alternative snack while watching a movie. I cut them in half and toss them in olive oil and salt. Roasted kale is great as well. I cut the stems off and chop into bite size, again toss in olive oil and salt. 7 mins on 425 degrees, toss, and then another 3 mins. It's tasty and crispy goodness.

I will have to try roasting the kale next time. I steam it or put it in soup. Last spring I decided to plant my own kale. I should have read the label. I had 6 plants and they grew and grew and grew. They ended up growing 5 feet tall!!! I was giving it away to anyone
who was willing to take it. I looked at the label one day and saw that it was a giant kale. I bought the plant up at Sky Nursery. Next spring I will plant normal kale.

I agree - they really are good roasted with a bit of olive oil and liberal salt! No bacon required :)

Just Me - I'm picturing you in your garden with your giant kale! Next year, if your normal kale gets out of hand, let me know. I only use it in a soup, but my best-tasting batches are when I've bought it from the Farmer's market.

Anyone care to venture what the initials of Brussels Sprouts may be? Could it be...BS?

Anyhoo, I despised the aroma/taste/weltanschauung of brussels sprouts for most of my life. Yet today I had them in my lunch - a pasta with squash, onions, bs, butter and cheese - scrumptious.

The turning point was realizing that perhaps dear mother was wrong in boiling them until the HazMat team needs to be called in to fumigate the kitchen and also wondering what to do with the cat that won't come into the kitchen to eat its own food - felinely wondering what unmeowable nonsense is going on in the previously wonderful Room of Kibble.

So now we saute the sprouts in Bacon and Butter. The wonder-aroma of Bacon overwhelms any hell-sulfur smell emanating from the sprouts - and yes, the cat can come back. Even the very next day!

Count me in on the BS! I made some this Christmas for the fam from an epicurious.com recipe that involved fried shallots and mushrooms sauteed in butter and wine. Yum!

I love brussels sprouts as much as the next guy, but as a substitute for popcorn? Dude....that's just wrong!

Chef Wahoo....I will give you some kale next summer. I am thinking about planting a giant one again only because I have a friend
who juices and loved when I brought her bags full of kale at a time.

Just me, your kale sounds like my zucchini last summer. I LOVE zucchini, but by the end of the summer, ugh...too much!!

BS lightly boiled, then coated in a mixture of canola oil, wasabi, black pepper and rice wine vinegar. Broil at 425. Stanky goodness!

    Here you go:

    Wasabi Brussels Sprouts
    2 pounds of sprouts

    Marinade:
    Salt + pepper to taste
    1/2 cup canola oil
1 heaping teaspoon wasabi powder-won't be spicy unless you double or triple
    Few spritz rice vinegar

Clean sprouts, cut X in stem ( to aid even heating)
Steam sprouts 7-8 minutes or until they just lose the bright green.

Pre heat oven to 425 F
    Whisk marinade ingredients in bowl.
Marinate hot sprouts for approx. 10 minutes

Spread sprouts on large baking sheet
    Bake approx. 7 minutes @ 425 F
Broil approx 5 minutes or until leave are sizzling

I've managed to develop a liking to just about all the veggies I hated as a kid, with the exception of two. Mushrooms and brussels sprouts.

    Never, No way, No how.

    So I have to share...

I just found some unfortunately forgotten brussels sprouts lurking in the depths of my refrigerator from circa New Year's Eve. Even the most well-intentioned, bacon-laden, butter-saturated sauteed brussels sprouts are evil after that long. Trust me on this one.

If you had told me, as a child, that I would grow to love brussels sprouts, I would've hooted you down in about 2 seconds. My brother and I used to literally run out of the house holding our noses when my mom cooked them.

But yes, now that my golden years are approaching...I love 'em. Had dinner at Ray's last night and they were one of the best things on the plate.

Funny to see this thread resurface. I like Brussels Sprouts roasted, or with bacon, or a couple other ways ... but the best I've ever had was deep fried from Hallava Falafel, a food truck down in Georgetown. Unfortunately it isn't always on the menu.
