nasty cheese

This kind of goes hand-in-hand with a previous thread about where to buy groceries. Anyway, I've been shopping at Holman QFC for the last couple months since the 15th QFC closed. One of our family staples is cheddar cheese and we usually just get Tillamook. But the last loaf of colby/jack cheese we got from the Holman QFC a couple weeks ago had a really weird, crumbly texture that cheese gets when it's been frozen. I figured, "Ok, they froze the cheese on accident. No big deal." It didn't taste that good and the texture was weird so we didn't eat it even though it wasn't "bad" or "spoiled". But then last week I bought another loaf of Tillamook colby/jack cheese from the Holman QFC. It didn't have the weird crumbly texture but when I ate a bite of it it tasted like rancid milk! It was horrible! I gave a little piece to my husband just to make sure I wasn't imagining things he said, "Oh god! That's awful! Throw it away!" The expiration date isn't for a couple months so I don't know what they did to it.

Anyone else have nasty cheese from that store or from the Tillamook brand? It seems weird we just had two bad loaves right in a row like that. I don't know if it's Tillamook or QFC not handling it correctly.

I know I shouldn't expect much from Tillamook - it's not a gourmet cheese or anything. But that last loaf was not just "average cheese" it was really really nasty. Just curious if I just accidentally bought the only two crappy cheeses or if Tillamook is having problems or QFC on Holman is poorly handling its cheese.

You should take it back to the store and talk to them. Otherwise, contact Tillamook.

I might venture to say that maybe they froze all of the cheeses, etc...during the move down to the Holman store and maybe it ended up affecting it in a yucky tasting way? I would for sure take it back to QFC and just kindly explain what you wrote above in your post and I am sure they will exchange it for you.

Best of luck with that, yucky cheese is really no fun!

That is awful, Ballardmama! I've never had that happen with a Tillamook product, but I guess it certainly could. On the other hand, I became very conservative when it came to pull dates on anything from the old QFC on 24th, after buying a super stinky chicken and slimy wonton skins. Both should've been fine, they had days left, but they SO were not.

Anyway, I would hazard a guess that it could be a problem with the temperature of a reach-in or walk-in refrigerator. I don't remember seeing much dairy when the old store was on its last days, and I figured they had sold it to customers. If Holman Rd had a malfunctioning unit, the store probably wouldn't admit it if they did know.

Did you keep the nasty co-jack so you could take it back, or did you toss it? I agree with Dinogirl, take it back if you can. Make sure they take a nice, deep smell. And/or, to be safe, contact Tillamook directly. They'll make damn sure that QFC doesn't have a problem with maintaining safe temperatures.

I need to sign off the interwebs for the night. I just finished reading a story that coliform bacteria had been found in many beverages dispensed from soda fountains in Virginia. Ick!

I haven't taken it back yet but I will. Ok, this is totally paranoid but I was waiting to make sure we didn't get sick from it before I took it back (if you get really sick from suspected food they like to test the food itself). That's a good idea to contact Tillamook. Honestly, we've been buying Tillamook products for years and have never had a problem with any of them so I'm guessing it had something to with transportation or storage after it leaves their factory. I'll see what they say at QFC. I hadn't thought of the issue of transportation from the old store - that would make sense.

I shopped at same store, bought same product and thankfully everything okay. Tillamook may not be 'gourmet' but I do like their cheese - the Colby/jack and smoked cheddar. Haven't tried the smoked cheddar - hope it's okay.
Like others said - definitely take back to QFC. It might be something they are not aware of.

It is also possible that they could have come into contact with some brussel sprouts. This would account for the rancid flavor.

As an aside, I bought a baby loaf of Tillamook Co-Jack at Ballard Market on sale for $4 off the regular price. Not sure if it's still on sale, it was last Sunday. A great deal though, and it tastes great.

I think Frayed Knot is right on the mark. Either that or it came in contact with beets.

QFC is really good about returns. If the cashier won't do it I would ask to talk to the manager.

I always buy Tillamook and I did have a problem with a block a few years ago. I just took it back and they said that happens once in a while. I've never had a problem since - but I do taste differences from time to time with different blocks (none are "bad" like that one time - just sharper or milder). Definitely take it back!
