I need to move a couple pieces of furniture about 20 blocks. Can you recommend a discount moving co? Or somebody with a truck?

If you rent a UHaul truck for $20 a day, and then go to Home Depot and grab some of the many folks out of work, you could do it for really cheap. Otherwise, I got a bid a couple years ago to move a 2 bedroom apt. about 10 blocks and it still cost us $400-$500.
Can't Stop Moving is a great moving company. But I agree with Kyle - rent a truck for $20 and get some friends to help if it's just a couple pieces of furniture.
You can rent a truck from Home Depot as well, I believe their rates are very cheap for an hour or two.
I know a young man with a truck who would like to earn some extra money. Before I talk to him, how large are the pieces of furniture (size and weight)? Are there stairs involved and if so, how many?
I had an old friend who used to run a small Seattle moving company called "Man With Truck", simple and brilliant. But I've lost touch with him over the last couple years and googling his business has proven unfruitful. But here is something that sounds similar...
I highly recommend Mountain Movers. They are based in Ballard and are fantastic! They have a minimum one-hour rental of their truck/+ 2 skilled movers, which as of October was $100/hour.
They are fast, knowledgeable and might even be part-magician with some of the items I though impossible to move.
Shout out to Kenyada!!
Added: They are also licensed, bonded and will take care of your items (like wrapping them up) to protect them during the move.
boardbrown, have you gotten in touch with your Man With Truck friend?
Ohh the movers my family hires are run by a lady owner who is just a sweetheart! The men that move for her are so fast. When we've hired them it's only cost us $200 for the whole cost. If you look back at my other posts on this forum, you'll see a post I made about a storage facility that my family had problems with....well the lady of this moving company fought for my mom and got her stuff out of there and was ready to call the police herself and show the cops that the guy couldn't keep her stuff. Well, this is the moving company and I highly recommend them..... now if I can just find the name and I always forget it.....brb
Ok, it's 'Half Price Movers' in the phone book. They are awesome!:)
Hi, I am wondering if, as a result of this thread, anyone has used the mover referred to by boardbrown above. Or any other student or "man with a van" kind of mover?
ditto "Can't stop Moving" They were great and very reasonable!
I realize this is a 2 year old thread, but I want to throw in my hat for Can't Stop Moving being awesome.
I could only afford 3 guys for 3 hours when I was coming from a 3br, full basement and garage with the lion's share of the stuff. I assumed there would be a lot of stuff left over. There wasn't. In 3 hours they moved, unloaded everything and managed to assemble my bed that they'd never seen before. The rate they moved at was astounding. I should say this was a confusing move - some things were going, others were staying. There were a couple items accidentally left behind and one heavy item that made it to the new place that should have stayed behind. That is actually pretty darn good for the confusing move it was.
Some businesses can deteriorate (or improve) over time and I can say CSM still rocks. This is the first time I've paid for movers and I just don't have a lot of cash to spare. Can't Stop Moving was worth every penny.
We also had a great experience with Can't Stop Moving, including moving the heaviest upright piano on earth.
Got a bid from Mountain Movers, too, and it was comparable (would have had to get separate piano movers with them, though). They did a great job moving in our neighbors. We went with CSM because MM was booked the weekend we needed them. I don't think you could go wrong either way choosing between these two.
Good Luck with your move.
I will be moving in the next six months and will be asking the same question. Let us know what method or business you used and how it worked out. I would be very interested.
hauling bylouie at the g male. He is wonderful and very reasonable, efficient and so very nice. He has moved my home and studio.
btw, I'll put rates right here so no need to google. It is 100 per hour for two people, 2 hour minimum. however, i think it's generally more efficient to hire 3 for 130 per hour. And they work their butts off.
Oh, there was one surprise I got. they said they charged me 15 minutes for travel (within seattle). I didn't remember seeing that on the website, but didn't quibble because it was a small amount and they got WAY more done than I ever thought they could. So just bear that in mind when setting times.
