For those of you who want to opt out of receiving a phone book, Rep. Carlyle just posted some helpful links on his blog.

    http://reuvencarlyle36.com/2010/01/27/phone-books-opt-out/

If you don't want to read the post, here are the direct opt-out links to Dex and Yellow Pages.

    Dex:

Yellow Pages (select 'Greater Seattle, WA' - they are making this intentionally difficult):

Thanks for posting this. I hate getting phone books and have had little luck finding out how to opt out.

  3. Last time I saw the kid throwing phone books on people porches I sure didn't see any list in his hand. Can anybody report success with using these forms to opt out?

Those archaic phone books are one of my biggest pet peeves. I can't fathom using one in this day and age.

They go right from the porch to the recycling bin.

I will definitely try this opt-out you describe. Thanks for the heads-up.

I really don't believe that this will have any affect, what-so-ever. The distributors of the books blanket their entire assigned region. That's how they get paid. Have any of you recieved the multiple phone calls that follow the deliveries? "Did you get your *fill in the blank* phone book?" I get them every year, from every phone company.
It's like opting out of junk mail, good luck with that one too.
It's the biggest waste of paper and add revenue that occurs in this day and age. Some day one of these marketing morons will figure that out, until then, please recycle.

Sometimes I think about gathering up a big bunch of phone books, seems that nobody wants them, filling the back of a pickup truck up with them and dropping the whole mess off in front of the Dex or Yellow Book office.

Apple- I want to do the same with the flyers & brochures that people leave on my door. Tired of the needless waste.

I think we can even take this a step further.

Rather than just drop off those phone books, we could build a barricade around their office with them. Or make phone book igloos over the employees' cars maybe.

I wonder if the advertisers actually think this sort of marketing is paying off.

GreatIdea- I like your line of thinking but a pickup can only hold so many books. Maybe it would hold enought to block the entrance/exit though.

Good luck with this. They'll never stop dumping this trash on your home. A legalized form of littering.

As a young girl I remember when getting the "new phonebook" was a BIG deal! We couldn't wait to see what page our last name appeared and how many people had our same last name. I remember when the city of Denver got so big the phone book became two books - the white pages and the yellow pages. That was cool back then. Oh, and there was only one brand of phone book - not all these random crazy brands. Phone books were actually used back then. Why, I wonder, are they still printing phone books? Do people actually use them anymore?

I used to read the phone books! It came in handy once when I found a dog on the freeway that had been hit by a car, I knew where the closest 24 hour vet was. I'm strange that way.

I know someone who leaves a copy of the phone book on her porch so they don't leave more.

I'll try the link, what the heck. Thanks for posting it.

did anyone else have to sit on a pile of phonebooks as a kid to reach the dining room table in a "big person chair"? that was the best use for a phone book ever. now they have all sorts of fancypants plastic overpriced marketed "stuff" you can buy for you child to sit on.

i liked the stack of phonebooks idea myself.

Julesage- your post made me laugh! I remember using them to hold the blanket on my fort down. One phone book for every chair did the job just fine!
