While I was running my errands this afternoon I saw some folks with a card table on the sidewalk outside Safeway on 15th and there was a photo of Obama hanging off the table with a Hitler mustache. I didn't have time to stop and find out what they were up to - does anyone know? Is it the LaRouche people again?

Sounds like some people that have never left the US and have NO idea what a socialist state is actually like... ignorance on this level is infuriating.

I usually have to steer clear of those tables because my husband loves to get into it with them. Ugh.

Larouchies are nuts, basically a political cult.

"Sounds like some people that have never left the US and have NO idea what a socialist state is actually like"

Well, I lived in one and I can tell you, it's a pain in the arse. If you want 50% minimum taxes on your salary and stifling labor laws, be my guest. Americans all seem to think it's always other people who will be paying the taxes to keep a welfare state alive.

Obama's plan isn't socialism because it would only put 5% of the population into government health care and will not create a massive NHS-style monster. Quite moderate by anyone's standards.

These guys are visionaries, and you will all come around eventually.

Hitler killed millions of people in the gas chambers. Obama tried to give everyone health care. Exact same thing.

Thank god these patriots are willing to bravely stand up and expose the truth to Americans stuck at the stop light at 15th and Market.

Actually he isn't. Many uninsured people (like under 30 hipsters) will be forced to buy health insurance.

But keep hope alive, it's all you've got.

So you're saying Obama is worse then Hitler?
We're through the looking glass on this one, people.

Huh, where did I say that?

I'm saying Obama is a moderate and not creating some crazy nationalized, single payer health care system like Canada or the UK have and the looney left in Seattle wants.

    Xtophe,

Canadians (been there recently, and they DO say this) LOVE their health care system. "Crazy" that they are, they like having good, affordable health care. A lot.

The UK has the NHS, folks love that, too. Been there recently as well. Steven Hawking has been kept alive by the NHS for a long, long time, given that he's got ALS.

Maybe they know something we don't? Experience something we don't have..?

The US is the only Western Democracy in the world that doesn't provide Health & Education like all it's peers.

Pay-as-you-go, Die Quickly. Wow. What a plan.

Well I guess you should have voted for Ralph Nader not Obama like I did because Obama has never promised a single payer or a nationalized system. I bet you feel stupid voting for him now!

I also don't want Canadian or British taxes. I had UK taxes for a decade in the late 60s and 70s.... no thanks Mr Wilson, even the middle class were loosing 50% of their income. I lived under the NHS but only survived because my family had BUPA private insurance.

You can have whatever health system you want.
    Pay for it yourself.
    Freedom.
Now, if they wanted to improve upon that model, I'm all for it.
    Problem is they don't.

What we really need is to get ourselves healthier and lessen our dependence on the pharmaceutical and insurance companies. Some ideas for ways to move in that direction -eat good food that is not full of antibiotics and preservatives, exercise more, put less toxins into our bodies and the environment, replace our fast food intake with more "slow food". As a nation, we need to change how we support real farmers (vs agribusiness) by voting with our forks and end subsidies to fast food suppliers (corn/sugar). Studies show that societies with fresh food diets live healthier and spend less money on health care.

Freedom to die if you have a "pre-existing" condition or don't have a job that affords you to have/buy health insurance.

    Exactly Ballardmike.

It seems that people who don't support basic health care for all don't understand this: the more people who are ill or diseased, the larger the chance they will infect/affect the rest of the population. For purely selfish reasons (at the very least), we should all be as healthy as possible to preserve the whole. We're a system, we affect each other. The chaos and confusion that will reign as regional health centers try to cope with a plague, say, or some other huge disaster - the ability to pay is nice but the disease that spreads to your drinking water or food supply or public transportation is not discriminating. EVERYONE is at bigger risk unless we take care of Everyone.

    I said improve upon...
If all the crap we had to buy wasn't mandated by the state for every policy, insurance could be VERY affordable.
As far as the pre-existing conditions, I do see reason to cover them. We have to pay for them either way already. The overall cost for insurance would still be dramatically less, and the choice would still be yours.

And if you can't afford? I guess you just get to die? But before you die you get to take an ambulance to the emergency room and have the bill paid by the taxpayers anyway.

Sounds a little crude to me.

cd6 I appreciate your humor even if Xtope didn't get it. and Xtope, oh really........my niece (very young) was tested for the breast cancer gene and was found to have it in both breasts. Immediately she was schedule for EVERYTHING, the tests, the radiation, the surgery, the reconstructive surgery, the chemo, and she goes to RETREATS to destress AND we didn't have to have bake sales, and car washes and jars by the register at the local store to raise the money to save her. WHY? Because she Canadian that's why. Big bad Canada ooooooooh. We should all be so scared of single payer health care. BAH. and onedurfullone thinks if you can't pay for all that yourself then you deserve to die.

In France and Canada, they force you to be able to go to the hospital and get taken care of.

Only in America, you have the FREEDOM to die of easily treatable conditions because you live in poverty or have a pre-existing condition.

That's just the way George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln, and Jesus wanted it when they founded this great country.

    cd6 I appreciate your humor

Thanks, I'll be here all week. Remember to tip your waitress.

Don’t worry folks single payer will eventually come, when enough people get tired of supporting an industry that charges for nothing. It’s not far off. Each year more and more lose even the poor excuse we have for private insurance more and more will start demanding a different system. Americans are just a tad slow on the uptake.

We boomers will soon all be on Medicare which will cover less and less. The technology revolution is full throttle and as it eats more and more jobs each year fewer and fewer will have employer offered plans. It’s coming don’t despair.

As for the lunatics at Safeway? My daughter always stops and asks them why they have Obama disguised as Charlie Chaplin.

That's so excellent!!! I think we should all say this from now on when we see them. BR's daughter will have started her own tiny revolution.

Charlie Chaplin, eh? Pretty funny, but ballardmama, I don't think being a smart-aleck makes Briar's daughter a revolutionary.
