This isn't strictly Ballard; but it's close. The Swedish Club (Swedish Cultural Center) puts on a pancake breakfast the first Sunday of each month. For $8 ($6 for members, $4 for children) you get three Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and lingonberries or strawberries, a slab of ham, orange juice, unlimited coffee, AND a ticket for seconds on Swedish pancakes. There is FREE parking in one of their three lots. (one is kitty-corner to the Center, the other two are next to it.) It is from 8 AM to 1:30, 1920 Dexter Avenue North. There is also live music. This has got to be the biggest breakfast bargain in town. See you there!

It's also very easy to get there by bike for less guilt with your whipped cream. It's uphill to get there, but it's a nice coast down and home with a full belly. :)

We used to go there for breakfast sometimes when I was kid - I'd totally forgotten about that! Thanks for posting.

they also have a GREAT Happy Hour every Friday(actually, hours- from 5 til...whenever they close), wine is $5, and the greatest view in Seattle. (Canlis and the Space Needle also have great views, but you'll pay a whole lot more for drinks AND parking.) In fact, I am going there tonight.(Voted Best Scandinavian Happy Hour by Seattle Magazine.) Every Friday they have lunch, a movie series, dinner, various smorgasbord sandwiches and desserts, as well as Happy Hour. Really, it's a steal.
Re: Pancake breakfast- where else can two parents and a kid get breakfast for $20? ($16 for members.) without paying extra for parking? The memberships are also a great value:
Individual Membership: $45
Household: $65
(Includes two adults and children under 21 who live at home.
Non-Resident (more than 50 miles from Center): $35
Student: $15 (Student members are younger than 21 years of age, or enrolled as full time students in an accredited institution of higher education.)That's a YEAR, not a month.

Jules - when I was a kid you had to be of Swedish descent to join. Is that still the case? Not a factor for me because of my Swedish immigrant grandparents, but could be for many on the forum.

How many Scandinavian Happy Hours are there in Seattle?

That does sound like a good deal. What’s the live music like? I had breakfast at the Sons of Norway once and one of the members played his accordion for us. Now that’s an authentic Scandinavian breakfast!

You don't have to be Swedish to join. When we were kids you not only had to be Swedish, you had to have a sponsor AND women weren't full members until 1989. (they were members of the Ladie's Auxilary.) Today, you just have to be interested in things Swedish, and many, if not most members are third, fourth generation Swedes, many, like me,are not all Swedish. We also have a large contingent of Norwegians, Dane, Icelanders and Finns who are members, as well as just your Heinz-57 mix generic Americans. The Swedish-Finn Society has its offices there as well.
Reader's Digest Condensed report on last night's event: I went with a friend (who is, BTW, 100% Norwegian AND a member of the Swedish Club), had dinner (meatballs, yum!) and went to the talent show, which was fun- there was a jazz combo, some beautiful Swedish dancers (he did a couple one-handed handstands in the dance, while she kept dancing, amazing) the Swedish Women's Chorus, Norwegian Ladie's Chorus, a violin/accordian duet, many wonderful singers who sang a wide variety of songs (ABBA,Patsy Cline, rock & roll, show tunes) and it was a gas. They had a little raffle, and I won a bottle of Aquavit! Amazingly, a guy we went to James Monroe Jr. High with BUT who went back to Iceland in High School was there; he donated a handmade Icelandic sweater for the raffle. All the proceeds went to help restore a hundred-year old loom at the SCC.
Well, there is also the Happy Hour at the Copper Gate and the Sons of Norway.

actually I just checked my schedule and I have Saturday, not Sunday off. If it's just us 2 we could indulge in The Dish, if we have friends we can find a place less popular. How bad is The Dish lately?
