I'm going through a New Orleans phase since being down there in fall to visit the relatives and just spent way too much money ordering Cafe Du Monde coffee with chicory and beignet mix from New Orleans to be shipped up here. My friend says there is a store at Southcenter in Tukwila that sells their products - does anyone know anywhere closer to Ballard? I so far haven't found anywhere. Any store that sells Cajun food would be nice actually because I'm having trouble finding that kind of stuff at the grocery stores here.

I seem to recall seeing some at the Fisherman's Terminal of all places, but I don't totally trust my memory. There was something from NOLA there that I was surprised to see. I am down there frequently. Next time I go, I will bring some back for you if I remember.

schaaster - if you see some beignet mix I'll try to make the beignets and serve it with some of the chicory coffee for you!

Safeway sells/used to sell a brand called "French Market" coffee which you could also buy at the little markets in Jackson Square. The French Market brand is very similar to the taste of the Cafe Du Monde brand. When I lived in Columbia City, the PCC at Seward Park, carried Cafe Du Monde and the beignet mix (oh, my...yum). Perhaps the Fremont PCC might have it.

You can also try purchasing your own chicory (stores with bulk spices tend to carry it) and mixing it yourself. Which makes me think, call Ballard Market or Central Market and see if they have it (the chicory and the Cafe Du Monde).

BTW, you might also look for coffee under the label CDM. It is the same thing. They tend to sell it under CDM in the grocery stores and Cafe Du Monde at the cafes.

I don't dare try to add my own chicory to coffee ... I am still trying to figure out how to cook, let alone mess around with stuff I know nothing about like coffee beans!

I have heard of the French Market brand but never had it. My relatives all drink the Cafe Du Monde brand. I'll give it a try. My husband hates chicory and thinks I'm nuts. He also has warned me that it is harder to make beignets that the directions on the box make it sound. Hmmmm ...

100% sure that World Market in Lynnwood, next to Target, carries Cafe du Monde mix, saw it there a week or so ago.

Fred Meyer and almost every other grocery store carries French Market coffee.

Amazon.com - yes I know, not in Ballard proper, but a lot of people who work at Amazon live in Ballard.

Just search for Cafe du Mode and you'll get several listings. Looks like it'd be ~$11 to your door so maybe not the cheapest, but certainly nice and easy shopping!

World Market (on Western) had the beignet mix ($3.49), but not the coffee.

I found them very easy to make -- getting the oil the right temp is always tricky for me. But bottom line: it's hot, fried dough with powdered sugar!!

Ballardmama - Funny you posted this...we just finished our beignet box mix from Cafe Du Monde. I was in New Orleans for buisness last year. Also I just empted the coffee can this week that I bought there. I took the coffee out and put it in a bag to save for my garden. We liked the coffee ok, but it wasn't as good as at the cafe (maybe the freshness factor?) and it sat for a long time. We saved the Cafe Du Monde coffee can and put our "coffee bean du jour" in there for storage. It's a fun way to remember that trip and it looks nice on the counter.

Anyway good luck...and let us know what you do.

Just saw it at Cost Plus World Market in Bellevue for $6.99. I would assume the one on Western near the Pike Place Market would have it too. They also had Cafe du Monde French Roast in a blue can that looked tasty.

Check http://www.worldmarket.com/ to get exact address.
