Hi, everyone! As I've mentioned before, I'm training for my first sprint triathlon this summer. I've been putting off buying a bike, but I think the time has come to get off the exercycle at the gym and get on the road. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend, so I am wondering if anyone has any advice on places that sell used/refurbished bikes, or if you know of anyone wanting to part with theirs for cheap. I'd also love advice on type and brand of bike and any extras you'd recommend, and what to look for when shopping for one.

    Thanks!

Well, I have a bike that has just been sitting in the corner since my brother bought it for me from REI. It's a guy's bike with the rod going across the top and would really like to get a more girly bike with a basket to ride around ballard in but I haven't thought about selling it. I think what I'd want for it umm someone wouldn't pay at least enough to get the girly bike I want lol. Good luck!:)

Go down to Recycled Cycles in the U-district. They have a lot of good and constantly revolving stuff there. You could also try the bike shop in the back corner of Second Ascent on Ballard Ave. They don't have a lot of used bikes there, but they might help you find what you need. The staff at both places are knowledegable and friendly.

craigslist is a great resource for finding used bikes.

while they'll be more expensive, gregg's cycles in greenlake is a great bike store. their bikes may be more costly, but if you get a good bike that fits you well, you might be more likely to use it a lot and get your money's worth.

bike sport on 24th just north of market is decent too. they've got a pretty detailed bike buyer guide on their website.

If you can make it down to Bike Works in Columbia City, they are really friendly and helpful. Very small inventory but you can probably get them to keep their eyes out for something for you, if you are looking used. Recycled does have good deals; I'd suggest going with someone who knows what bike will fit you well. Also, the Bike Expo this weekend cascade.org/expo

Fit is the most important part of buying/riding a bike. You may be able to find a good deal on craigslist or recycled cycles but if the fit is compromised or you don't like the type, style or even color the bike will just sit in the corner as mentioned above.
Go to any shop and test out the different types/styles of bikes.
Alpine hut on Western probably has some closeouts/last years bikes at a good price (my favorite is Don Love at Bothell Ski and Bike) They usually have closeouts too.

Don't be so cheap! (a Ballard business told me that once) If you are serious about this triathlon then get serious about buying a bike.
It is mostly true that you get what you pay for when buying a new bike.
Good used bikes can be found but you have to kiss a lot of frogs to get the right one.

I wish you good luck in your search and hapiness at the finish line.
