This is NUTS! We saw two raccoons running across 56th to the Denny's parking lot tonight. I didn't even think we would have raccoons in Ballard. Nuts!!!

Plenty of 'racks' in Ballard. I live close to the railroad tracks, and 'mine' live near them. Everynight, they are in my yard, fussing and chirping around a water feature in my yard. Right now, the mother is showing her two babes the ropes of foraging. They look pretty darn cute, but that warning growl is pretty scary. I am not one of those people who feeds them.

They are resourceful and can find safe places for their nest(or den, or whatever it's called) just about anywhere. I used to live on 9th and saw them regularly there too.

  3. Yup, we have a marauding raccoon in our neighborhood. He's figured out how to squeeze through the neighbor's cat door.

We have a couple raccoons that hang around our street corner at night, tormenting the neighborhood cats and creating mischief. One night last week we made the mistake of leaving the kid's inflatable pool in the back yard w/ water in it, and they decided to have a 'Coons Gone Wild party back there and ripped the thing to shreds.

We had a raccoon on our patio a few weeks ago - I've seen them around when I'm driving home at night too.

Lots of raccoons in Ballard. Watch for them, city racks are tough and not afraid of dogs. I lost a cat to a rack several years ago - our vet said it wasn't unusual for a rack to take on a housecat and win.

But the raccoons that have moved in to the old Denny's lot are a RARE and ENDANGERED breed: Benaroyus Thwarticus. I'm pretty sure the area will have to be preserved as a national park or something.

Yeah, that's it. A national park!

I need to amend my earlier 'rack' post. I do not intentionally feed raccoons.

Last night my cats were hovering around, looking hungry (this pair hasn't figured out they can meow to get attention, lucky me). Their bowl was gone. I accused my spouse of moving it. This morning I found the empty bowl just outside the door. Those racks came in the house and dragged the full bowl several feet across the room and outside.

    Whoa.

    Scary.

Time for one of those locking cat doors that open only for critters wearing the collar transmitter!

On the other hand, some geeky raccoon would probably hack it. ;-)
