What's the deal with Chase?

  1. This isn't a rant about them as a bank, rather it's a bit of a rant about how the branch on 22nd does things. Just wondering if this happens to any of you who bank with Chase. This has happened the last three or four times in a row.

I walk in and note that there are two to three tellers at their windows. Often, only one of them is open and the others are either obviously doing some kind of work or just kinda hanging out chatting with one another. Usually, there are fewer than five customers in the teller line and everything seems to be running smoothly. I also see a six or eight other Chase employees stationed at the desks in the lobby area.

The desk-jockey nearest the little deposit slip station sidles up to me and says "Hello. What brings you in today?" which just seems creepy to me. I always answer "Just depositing a check, thanks." to which he replies "Come on over. I can take care of that for you."

I finish filling out my slip, while he waits, and then we take three steps over to his desk, where he brings up my account and verifies ID, signatures, paperwork. Meanwhile, there's a second desk-jockey sitting in a chair next to him. He asks me if I need a balance or anything else today. I decline and he says "Okay, that'll just be a moment." And then he hands my deposit to desk-jockey #2, who the walks it over to desk jockey #3, who walks it over to a teller who actually processes the deposit. Then desk-jockey #3 brings back my ID and receipt and hands it to desk jockey #2, who hands it to desk-jockey #1, who slides it across his desk to me.

Just a couple months ago I'd simply fill out my deposit slip and go see a teller. Now, it's like a seven-layer dip of banking. Maybe something has changed in the way they do things in the office, but since I only go in every other week on a Friday morning to deposit a paycheck, and the occasional birthday checks, etc., maybe I missed the memo. I used to use the branch closer to home, but this branch is right along my path to work each morning, so it's convenient. But it's really starting to creep me out and I feel like it's a huge waste of everyone's time.

I wonder, only half-jokingly, if this is my punishment for telling them we don't do direct deposit every single time I go in. I get that they want to provide this great service to give me access to my money a whole 9 hours earlier than I get it now, but it's not an option for me, so no thank you. Anyhow, is my experience common, or am I somehow being singled out by the Gods Of Chase?

I fell for that once. There were only a couple people in line so I sat down while he took my deposit up to the teller, who by that time had more people in line, and I had to wait even longer than if I would have gotten in line.

    Odd!

I'm not sure which is worse...your story...or when I banked with Bank of America YEARS ago, and every week I'd go in and deposit my paycheck, and EVERY week, without fail, the teller would say something snarky like, "It looks like you tried to deposit a check in the exact same amount last week...." And I'd have to reply every time, that yes...I didn't TRY to deposit a check of the same amount last week, I SUCCESSFULLY deposited a check in the same amount last week - because it's my PAYCHECK...and I work the same amount of hours every week, and the check is always the same. It seriously became such a snark fest that I decided to take my banking elsewhere. Not sure if that was MY punishment for not depositing my check via the ATM?

Odd. I used to bank there when it was WaMu and had some weird experiences like that. Now, I'm at US Bank on 15th and have had no problem. The weird thing there is that when you walk up to the teller there is a plaque-thing (official term, I'm sure) letting you know the tellers name. Here's the odd part of it: under the tellers name is his/her likes & hobbies. For example the teller is "Jim" and "Jim" likes skiing, photography, and his favorite color is blue. It felt like a personal add or something. I laughed the first time I saw it and I think the guy was a little offended, but it was just so ridiculous. I don't need to know that my teller likes the color blue. I just want him/her to deposit my check. Funny.

I worked as a bank teller in the mid 90s. Dont blame them. They have very strict rules laid down my management and dually enforced by the computer system.

It's basically a fancy retail job. Shitty pay and zero room for decision making or thinking outside of the box.

The Bank of America in the U-Dist at 47th & the Ave is exactly the same way, it works my last nerve.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  7. Barney, I figured they had a script of sorts, kinda like "do you want fried with that?"

I don't blame them, not at all. I'm just really weirded out by it, especially when it all seems like a time waste for everyone. I suppose that's how Chase wants them to spend the time, though.

We left Chase for BECU a couple months ago and are so glad we did. Awesome interest on the first $500 in your accounts and affordable overdraft protection and policies make up for the lack of traditional tellers at BECU. If you're thinking about switching you should check them out!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  9. I get the feeling that they want to look into your account to see if they can offer you other services, lines of credit, business account and the like. What would happen if you declined their offer to help you and just remained in line?

I've had that happen at B of A and US Bank too.

I got the overly-friendly thing when I closed out my account at the Chase in Fred Meyer (I prefer not to deal with out-of-state megabanks). Then they sent me a certificate good for $150 if I re-opened the account, so I did (I'm not an idiot, I do like free money), and got the overly-friendly thing again.

My theory is that somewhere in the marketing department at Chase they know that their bank does not have the best reputation for customer-friendliness. Instead of changing their policies, however, I'd be willing to bet they sent all of their employees to seminars and workshops to teach them how to be overly friendly. It isn't working because it comes off as forced and insincere, almost creepy.

They absolutely want to look at your balance... Key sales tactic. If you have large cash balances they want you to move your money into market rate accounts, cds etc...

I actually had a teller physically walk me over the cash machine to show me how to make a deposit. I was very annoyed by the whole scenario. Just wanted to make a quick deposit through the window. Talk about jeopardizing your own job security.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  12. I'm not sure why, but I feel kind of trapped when he comes over to offer to help me and instead of saying "Nah, I'll just hit the teller real quick, but thanks!" I get sucked into his vortex. Next time, though, I'm gonna try to break free of his magnetic field or whatever it is. Like Barney, I just want to make a deposit and get my ass to someplace I actually want to be.

Mr Crankypants - what those desk jockeys have is called an "event horizon". The trick is if you see them coming you can need to move away from them. If they still come toward you, move away again. Make sure to stay at least four feet away from them at all times, otherwise if you get too close they will suck you in. But if you stay outside the event horizon you will be safe. And if you continuously physically dodge away from the desk jockeys they will get frustrated and move on. And it will be funny for the rest of us watching :)

I know about event horizons because my cats have them ... but only when they're on the bed.

I think Chase is a great advertisement for other banks in the area. I usually use the Chase branch on 15th north of 85 street. I now just make a game out of guessing how long it will take me to make a simple deposit, since it used to really frustrate me that there were many employees sitting around at desks, tellers at windows not taking customers, and when I finally would get to the window the process still took ages.
I have accounts at Bank of America, too, and find when I need anything other than basic services it is super frustrating. Really want to take my money out of that bank. I have found Wells Fargo to be quick and be open longer hours than the other banks. I may switch to them for convenience. We also have a whole bunch of change waiting to be deposited--thinking we will go to Viking bank and open an account with them since we've heard good things and they are local.

My bank (was Frontier last week, now is Union) is normal, friendly but very efficient service. Our other bank, Key, you always have to wait in line to get the one teller who is working. There may be 4 or 5 other employees doing stuff and avoiding eye contact, but only one teller at their booth. Both banks ask if you want your balance and don't do it if you say no.
What does grate on my nerves is the "customer service" at Safeway on Market. Every time I use the Safeway card the clerk demands to know how to pronounce my last name "so we can remember next time"-which they never do. They don't care, it is management making them ask this. I just want to pay for purchases and get out of there ASAP, that store has always felt a bit creepy.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  20. gordy, I know what you mean about Safeway. My last name is mispronounced almost 100% of the time anywhere, so I hardly even notice anymore. Funny thing is, our Safeway card is in Mrs. C's maiden name, which is a name I can't for the life of me understand how people could mispronounce, but they do. I do get a kick out of it when they call me Mr. Hermaidenname.

Funny you should mention this. I was in the Chase near my office downtown last week (the one on 3rd & Seneca) and the same thing happened to me. I was startled b/c I was daydreaming in line and the guy came up behind me. He told me he often gets that reaction (well then perhaps you shouldn't come up behind people, dude) and he also told me that he went to some sort of training seminar in Chicago and in Chase branches on the East Coast and Midwest they don't even have tellers standing behind a counter - they are all at desks and you sit down with them for every transaction. So they are directing the staff out here to do the same thing when the lines get too long, or something. He also tried to get me to roll over my 401k with them and open up a savings account. Made me want to use the ATM for future deposits.

I went in there late one Friday afternoon and it was super creepy! Not only was I the only one in there (which in and of itself was strange, considering it was a Friday afternoon), but all of the tellers were clustered in groups, and not one of them made a move to help me. It sounded like they were making after-work plans, so I guess they were busy. As I was trying to get someone to stop talking and help me, I realized they were wearing hideous uniforms of some kind, which I don't recall ever seeing in a bank before. It had the vibe of stumbling in on a secret Moonie convention. I couldn't get out of there fast enough!

The Wells Fargo in the Safeway on 85th is the absolute worst when it comes to forced customer service. Sorry pal, how about instead of focusing on forcing a conversation with me, you deposit my check and let me get the hell out of there?

I used to work for Wells Fargo, that company was the worst when it came to the CS crap they made their employees do. And they always had the worst corporate acronyms to sum up whatever program it was. Awful Management 101.

I've had it happen to me.

I'm there once a month; I only go to Chase to make my auto loan payments. It saves me a stamp, lets me verify that the correct payment is being made (and ontime) and gets me out of the office (I work 10minutes away walking).

In order to avoid dealing with swarmy banker at the desk, I've nabbed a few extra payment slips and pre-fill them out. I walk in and get immediately in line; no chance for them to hover over me like a vulture and waste my time. (There's no way I'll ever join Chase for my regular banking needs; I love my credit union)

I worked for WaMu for a very long time, then for Chase until June. WaMu did the same thing, actually. I do know that the personal financial reps are supposed to help out those in waiting in line if they don't have a customer at their desk. It's meant to be helpful, but it's not especially effective in my experience (as with yours). It would be good feedback for the manager of the branch. You could indeed also say "oh, I'm fine here, but thanks" and wouldn't offend anyone. I think they might even understand why you're saying it. I mostly use the ATM to deposit checks now, but perhaps that isn't your favorite method of banking.

As soon as I run out of my checks with the WaMu imprint, I'm going to switch...likely to BECU. I'm sentimental and since WaMu was my bank and then my employer for such a long time, I'm hanging on to the last illusion of WaMu.

Funny as it sounds, I've been avoiding BECU b/c there isn't a local branch with staffed workers in the area. Even though I rarely go into a bank, I have this illusion that i'll be taking my daughters to their local bank to open an account when they are old enough. By the time they are actually old enough, there will probably only be online accounts anyway :)

Oh Pennygirl- so were we. So were a LOT of people.

I worried about that too jj - but you know they do have a neighborhood branch in the hood now - well...not branch - but a place where you can open an account. You can deposit through ANY credit union ATM - even at 7-11. I feared it wouldn't be convenient, but truly it is.

And...FWIW - my debit account number has been stolen twice now -and both times BECU credited my account the amount that was stolen immediately while they worked it out. Also, I had an online business charge me TWICE for something I purchased ONCE, and BECU credited my account immediately and then fought with the online business on my behalf.

We bank at BECU and love it. We had a little savings account and a safe deposit box at the WAMU on 15th/87th until they wouldn't let me access the box one day and asked me "does your husband know you're trying to access your box today?". They were okay until Chase took over.

I switched from wamu (chase) because of parking issues at the ballard branch to wellsfargo. Parking is not a problem at wellsfargo, but when I go into the branch to deposit my paycheck, the teller needs ID (im not askin for cash back?)then cannot do the deposit because its over his limit? Then he calls the manager over to look at my ID and approve the deposit. So I am left wondering, why a bank would put a teller in place who cannot approve a 2 week paycheck deposit without the manager. Now I go ATM all the way, way less pressure. It's all very weird when you have to justify yourself to give them money.

I use the Chase branch on 85th and Greenwood, do all my banking online, social security direct deposit...started with WaMu when they were the only bank where you could pay your bills (not online then, over the phone)so I have a loooonnnng history with them. I only go in to cash an occasional check. So this week I go in with a lousy $25 check, and the teller keeps me at his "station" for over 5 minutes trying to lecture this "little ole lady" (retired accountant) how I should use my debit card more, it will be of benefit for me...I kept telling him I use it when I want to withdraw money and do not want to pay grocery or any other bill with it. He would NOT let it rest. I finally told him to give me my $25 or get me the manager. What a Putz.

The Washington Federal just north of 85th on Holman Road is a great bank. My mom is in the process of switching there from US Bank because she got tired of being constantly hit up to invest in various financial services offers (CDs, IRAs, annuities, you name it). Also, they pestered her all the time calling to ask if she was satisfied with her service.

Another possible explanation for why Chase employees are acting so weird is because they've been told to do so by corporate management. Is it possible that Chase (more accurately JP Morgan Chase) is feeling the effects of the move by a lot of people to local banks and credit unions?

Personally, I think big banks like Chase, WaMu, BofA, Wells Fargo have gotten entirely enough of my tax dollars in the giant corporate welfare giveaway called TARP. I choose not to do business with them any longer.*

Frankly, I'd like to see a return to cash and even *gasP* checks opposed to the debit/credit/check cards. I think the freedom that the ATM/check cards give people has created this habit of overspending. And paying with cash is even faster than using a debit card.

I don't mean a literal punch in the face, I just get so frustrated with people who write checks, they are the same people who argue over an item they thought was 30 cents cheaper.

Of course the problem with debit cards and old people is they are inevitably to technologically neutered to actually be able to use it, so I'm not sure which one is actually faster.

Moral of the story is don't get in line behind blue hairs at the grocery store.

We pay cash for just about everything.

We read a book called "The Complete Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. It taught us a lot about budgeting, etc... and we pay cash for most things.

Each month we do a budget at the beginning of the month and figure out a grocery budget, a restaurant budget, and an entertainment budget. We then take the amount of each from the bank in cash and keep it in separate envelopes. It really help control spending and you see where your money goes. If by the end of the month we are running low on one of the budgets we just have to tighten things up.

jj - what Reba said - the BECU on Market (just a couple doors down from Great Harvest Bread) has staffed workers who will do everything for you except take deposits and make withdrawals - you have to do that at the ATM.

We opened our accounts at the Market St. BECU and applied for our HELC there. We also opened an "early savers" bank account for our six year old daughter (they only need $6 to open the account and it's in the child's name) there so she can put some of her allowance money in her own bank account and earn a bit of interest on it - which is helping her understand investing on a tiny, Kindergarten level.

Pokerguy - just wait until you're in line to buy diapers after being up all night four nights in a row and you are staring at that little debit card key pad because you forgot your pin number ... everyone will hate you too ;)

(what - has that happened to me???? Surely no ... =cough= ...)

In the "no one has any privacy with me" world of doing accounting I've noticed that if people are terribly in debt and trying to get out of it, it makes it a lot harder if they have all their bills paid automatically. I usually suggest that until they get their finances in order they go back to paying their bills with checks they write themselves each month and only buy stuff in stores with cash until they have a handle on what they're spending. I don't like checks at the grocery store either - unless your debit card is broken or you forgot your wallet there is no reason not to use cash or your debit card. Paying with a check when there's a long line at the grocery store seems like someone just being a stubborn curmudgeon and trying to flip off technology and anyone who is willing to change with society's changes. Even my elderly parents use cash or a debit card cause they "hate taking the time to write a check when there is a long line".

Video contains profanity and obscene language which is why it's intended for mature audiences. The power of the internet troll compels me to respond to this thread.

Back on topic, I am no fan of standing in line while people ahead of me write checks but that's hardly the biggest of problems I deal with in my life. I just shrug and wait and make an active attempt to not appear annoyed. Pokerguy looks like he needs some anger management lessons here.

My way of dealing with people in checkout lines was to hit Safeway after 11-11:30pm or at 7am. I get the checkout clerk when I am ready and that was when I was shopping at Safeway. Now that I get all my stuff at FM, I use the self-checkout system. I don't deal with people butchering my no-longer-roomate's name (still have his Safeway card), asking me if I want help with my loaf of bread or standing behind other people.

Technologically neutered eh? I mean where does it stop and you become a tech. guru enough to judge someone else? I've been with computers for the last 15 years of my life and what I know pales in comparison with/to what I do not know. (One of my guiding rules in life: The more I know, the more I do not know).

Greenwood Cousin: If you are 68, why not be the wiser man here? ..second childishness and mere oblivion..? Or maybe PokerGuy deserves a steelcage deathmatch with Cousin. Ballard High School at 3:30pm? FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. Just..wow.

Face it folks. Our entire economy for the last 30 years has been based on selling a bunch of idiot trend followers whole lot of crap for which they have no need. Banks are no different. “Want fries with that? What a CD or an IRA with that? Want room for milk? What to upgrade to granite stainless or leather? Want faster internet? Need a phone with new hotter features? Need the newest video game? It’s all the same. We live in a world where everyone’s a salesman trying to get rich and it is unsustainable as the last three years have shown. Sometimes I walk through Ballard and I get visions of rats on treadmills.

“Just exactly who thought up this idea of a 24/7 rat race anyway?”
