That is a pretty reasonable rate, my BF charges $75, but he also has a tech business and pays taxes and B&O and all that junk so he makes much less. He works with a well established guy here and there that charges $150 (does businesses mainly).

Pattr- IF you don't have a legit business (IE you have to keep your wage as is so your not paying more in taxes), you may want to try a shifting wage. Like a flat $50 to remove a virus or $20 to replace a CD drive. People seem to be willing to pay based on difficulty of task. People can't for the life of them remove a virus, but may be able to upgrade their windows or install a program but may want a little help.

I'm suprised by the complaint. Aside from babysitting perhaps, 50 is a fair rate. It's far less than a plumber, carpenter, or mechanic.

  7. Clearly I'm out of touch. I used to work at a help desk and I just find that amount pretty steep for the type of the work it is. My dad is calling me all the time for help and usually it's some silly thing that he thinks is difficult. Like the time he installed Internet Explorer 8. He hated it so much that he took it into the shop to have it "fixed." If people are willing to pay $50 or $75 an hour for this stuff then okay. I learned something new.

I promise I am not trying to fleece anyone. I have over 20 years experience in the field with the past 10 working for a certrain large software company on the EastSide.
I am certified, college educated and have a business license. If you can find a better deal then by all means take it. I am local to Ballard/Crown Hill and enjoy helping others and thought this might be a good way to earn a little money while I search for my next job.

Alot of brick and morter businesses are still trying to get a presence online as well as the myriad of OS changes, those upgrades that can confuse those who do know & don't forget those who still refuse the ms update cycle & wonder wht the PC is sooo sluggish & blue screenng them !!
yes, I'm betting there is a place for your services there- luck to ya-

Patrick, can you give a bare bones estimate for replacing a hard drive in a Toshiba 13" laptop? I bought it in 2001, when I graduated from my last round of academia. It got some kind of virus that ate most of my data and the rest couldn't be recovered. I bought a pc, and the laptop's been in the back of my closet, forgotten, for about four years. I'd like to give it to my (also starving) writer boyfriend, but we need to get the hard drive replaced. Nothing fancy, no bells and whistles, just want to get it up and running.
