So my darling daughter had the HUGEST fit today about wanting french toast for breakfast. I didn't have time to make it and won't tomorrow morning either, so I promised that we'll have it for dinner tomorrow. We might be eating out though...is there anywhere in Ballard that will help me out for dinner? The only place I can think of is Vera's, but I don't know if they stop serving breakfast at a certain time or not?

    Thanks!

Vera's closes too early. Try Original Pancake House on 15th.

Portage Bay Cafe has GIANT waffles ... but alas, they close at 2:30 PM.

I second the vote for Original Pancake House on 15th, near 80th. They're open for dinner now and serve breakfast items then. We go there with our 2 1/2 year old and he loves it. The people who work there are great with kids. They have especially yummy french toast!

Brinner is served at the Ballard Smoke Shop, they close at 8 and it's usually pretty quiet in the restaurant during the week.

You might want to also look into Hi-Life.

Everything else I can think of closes early.

You could always try the Denny's all the way up on 155th and Aurora. But that's far...

Suzaroo, French Toast for dinner is a favorite at our house! Our 3yo is a french-toast-making expert. Maybe we should do brinner together sometime...

I enjoy a good French toast casserole.

    NIGHT BEFORE FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE

1 (10 oz.) loaf long thin French bread (18 inch long)
    8 eggs
    3 c. milk
    1/4 c. granulated sugar
    3/4 tsp. salt
    1 tbsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. butter, cut into 5 pats
    1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
    Syrups of choice

Grease well a 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Cut brad into 18 (1 inch) slices. Arrange slices in one layer in bottom of pan. Beat eggs, milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla in a large bowl. When thoroughly mixed, pour over bread in pan. Bread will float on top of liquid.

Cut each pat of butter into 4 pieces. Dot each piece of bread with piece of butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Cover; refrigerate overnight, or up to 36 hours.

Place dish, uncovered, in cold oven. Turn oven temperature to 350 degrees (325 degrees if glass) and bake 45-50 minutes or until bread is puffy and light brown. Remove from oven; allow to set 5 minutes. Bread will rise to top with custard on bottom of dish. Serve with raspberry, strawberry, or coconut syrups. Yields 9 servings.

When I walked past Kiss Cafe yesterday they had a sign out front that said they serve breakfast all day.

thanks for all of the suggestions!

silly_girl: kiss cafe....it feels like a bar to me. she and i poked our heads in one day and i didn't get a very welcoming (in general? for my darling?) vibe.

haven't been to the pancakes house in years. remember when it was mcgrath's? *sigh* we loved to go get the early bird dinners with all of the old timers. and jello with cool whip on top for dessert. ha!

haven't been to hi-life. will keep it in mind. :)

wally: sounds fun! haven't had more than two people over at a time since we moved into our apartment. we recently moved from a giant house where we had 30+ people over somewhat regularly for potlucks, etc. the smaller space intimidates me. :/ (but i do NOT miss the house!)

jack: oh yum! thanks for posting that!

edotdj: is the smokeshop kid friendly? haven't made it in there yet.

  13. Jack, that's an awesome casserole. One of my workerbees made a similar thing for me not too long ago (it was a very effective and delicious incentive for me to cover some shifts for her). She made it with the cinnamon chip bread from Great Harvest and added a layer of bacon on top (cook the bacon first). Delish!

smoke shop is pretty kid friendly. there can be some salty language during hangover breakfast on the weekends but never during the week.

Jack Tar- That recipe looks so yummy! I love breakfast casseroles that you prepare the night before! Great for morning get-togethers. I made a really yummy Breakfast Strada (Stratta? sp?) on Mothers Day. I prepared it the evening before and just had to pop it in the oven Sunday Morning. :)

We noticed the other day that the Pancake House was open for dinner - does anyone know if they have things *other* than pancakes at dinnertime? And how crowded does it get? We've had some decent meals there, but the wait can be brutal with small kids!

  18. They appear to have lots of stuff other than pancakes, but all breakfasty: http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/

The Smokeshop has some pretty decent french toast. Nothing fancy, but the price is right.

The Original Pancake House has non-breakfast items on their dinner menu. We've been there 3 times for dinner and there's never been a wait. Instant seating, which is important for us since we have a 2 1/2 year old.

interesting to hear that your hash had issues. last i went there, i had to send mine back twice. i've eaten there pretty much every weekend for the past year so something must have changed. i will be sure to talk to the cook tomorrow. seems like he's not squeezing the excess starch out of the hash, just grating it and ploping it on the grill.

glad your husband liked the CFS! totally my favorite.

Our family just came back from dinner at the Original Pancake House, breakfast for dinner!!! They have a dinner menu and they also have a smaller version of their morning breakfast menu. I was hoping to order my usual, coconut pancakes, but it wasn't on the menu. When I asked the server if they would make it, they said they actually will make most anything off of their regular breakfast menu except for a couple of things that take 30 minutes, I think dutch babies or something. So even though they don't give you the full breakfast menu, you can still order most things off of their regular breakfast menu. Yay for coconut pancakes with orange syrup!

We went at 6pm on Saturday night and we got right in. If you have kids, this place is the best. If you're looking for a seniors type dinner menu, they have some traditional dinner sort of food (corned beef, meatloaf, etc). Fast seating, quick service, fresh crayons and paper, kids menu for $2.99, and good food and good coffee.
