Got a call today from my friend in Shoreline who had a "weird looking chicken" in the yard. Several hours later, he had not managed to catch it yet, although the chicken was friendly and did seem to enjoy human company. By now it was determined it was a rooster. I came to the rescue around 4:30, got soaking wet while making chicken conversation and caught the also soaked silkie chicken. We put him in a cat carrier.

We called Seattle animal control, who said to contact King County animal control (the one in Kent with the bad reputation). I called Pasado Safehaven and left a message. Ditto with PAWS. He's now listed in Craigslist's lost&found.

This bird is used to people. He loves being petted. Silkies can't fly and are strictly pet/hobby birds. He won't stand a chance against raccoons. We think that, since he's a rooster, he may have been dumped. If he were a she, I would be building a chicken coop now, but since roosters are now allowed in the city (or Shoreline), that's not possible.

Trust me, I have met plenty of roosters whose necks I did not mind wringing, but this chicken is pet quality. Any suggestions as to where to take him? Choking the chicken or assorted chicken dishes are not an option.

Silkies don't taste good anyway. Their meat is really tough. They are terrible food-chickens, even for chicken soup.

My friend owns a chicken farm up north and breeds silkies for show. If you can't find a home for the little guy I bet she'll take him off your hands. And if she can't take him (he may not be show quality enough to risk having around her hens) then she has a friend who has a chicken rescue and will take him. Email me if you can't find his home and I'll take him up there. pupplywupply at yahoo dot com

    Thanks Ballardmama!

The Chinese credit silkie chicken soup with healing powers. They sell them at Chinese markets like the one on Aurora, head, beak and feet still attached (YUK!). I will take up on your offer if a solution has not been found tomorrow. I have even thought about making him into a capon, if that could shut him up. This boy is loud!

Maybe we should cook him up and serve him to WB - she and her husband both have sinus infections.

thanks for the laugh! I can just picture the silkie rooster, crowing away, in peaceful Ballard! Probably like it used to be.

Perhaps I could borrow the rooster, and set it near the house with the kid who starts screaming at 5 am, the dad screams back, and the mom screams 'shut up, shut up'? Every single day.

Amazingly, he had a quiet night in Dave's spare bedroom.

Meanwhile, neither PAWS not Pasado has called back with advise.

Chicken soup for WB and her man ... just sayin' ...

Seriously, I'll be heading out to my friend's farm on Saturday if you need me to take him out there. You are much kinder people than me - we have a strict "no chickens in the house!" rule.

I missed the call from the Pasado lady, so I still hope to hear back from her. Also called my vet about the capon option and am waiting for her to call back. If that would stop the crowing, he's got a home. I will email you as soon as I know more!

You know ... I have a deep dark secret that I have a rooster. I got him being told he was a hen, then he never laid eggs and I caught him crowing one afternoon and he has physical characteristics of a rooster now. But other than that one time my neighbors and I have never heard him crow. Of course he also has a lot of physical problems so he's not the head of the pecking order like most roosters.

Here's a linky to the cute guy:

    Here.

And the reason he won't do so well in the house:

    Here.

Four a.m. today, the flying Walenda failcat was practicing on the headboard and fell on my head - claws, mass, and all. Five a.m. and Eisenstein was crowing like a, well, himself. Sleep sounds good about now! I'd like to find a good home for Eisenstein by Saturday if at all possible.

Like Ballardmama, a school I worked for years ago was given a chick that wound up being a rooster. After a neighbor reluctantly complained (she was so apologetic, it was very sweet) we ended up running out of options and called an Asian food bank. They were happy to come get it. Sorry if I ruffle any feathers with this info...

The rooster in question is very happy at a farm in unincorporated Snohomish County north of Ballard. I picked him up from Dave this afternoon and took him out there and the woman who owns the farm loves him and thinks he's a very handsome boy. She put him into the chicken run and he had a little scuffle with the other roosters then they figured out where everyone stood and he settled in just fine. While we were out there we got to see a Barbados black-bellied sheep and my daughter got to feed a llama.

USS Essex - actually where this chicken was found it's more like a car is lacking something to squish!

You are awesome Ballardmomma! He was found on a very busy street next to a high school here in Shoreline. I tried for about an hour to capture him and failed. Nehalennia is the RoosterWhisperer and caught him. I think this is the best possible ending for him and am pleased he's with other Silkies.
