Now days it seems that a pill is the answer for everything. I am not against taking meds if needed. However, I like to try and eat healthier and try natural remedies. For example, I would often get a sore throat when sick. I have incorporated yogurt in my diet and have found that the bacteria cultures in yogurt promote throat health (I love finding answers via google). Since adding yogurt to my diet I rarely get a sore throat.

The co-workers and I were chatting about home remedies for colds, hangovers, and what ever. So I was wondering if anyone has any home remedies or healthy eats that they use.

There are lots of plants and weeds in the area that have medicinal uses. Here are a couple of examples of plants that I use every so often.

Dandelion leaves are rich in flavinoids, which covers a myriad of issues, and many cultures use it for improved liver function.

Making a tea out of malva plant leaves & flowers helps with sore throats and mild congestion. If the flowers and leaves are just eaten plain it also helps act as a laxative.

Another note, if you want to try dandelions. Make sure that you know your plants. A lot of people get dandelions and catsear mixed up. Catsear is also edible, but I'm not aware of any medicinal benefits.

Final disclaimer. All my herb/plant knowledge was passed down via family lines, so some training in prepping and what parts to use for what becomes critical, so don't just go out there and start picking. Do lots of research first and then find somebody knowledgeable to learn from.

And, try to realize that herbal remedies are often just less processed drugs. They still can contain harmful components if incorrectly used.

    Be careful out there...

  4. Wear mini purple garlic bulbs as earrings and evil will avoid you.

Even evil beings know that garlic should only be worn around your neck.

Homemade chicken stock has been proven healthy and curative. The stories about gramma's chicken soup are true. I use lots of wings of course & think all the collagen is good for the joints.

Apple cider vinegar with a little honey works well with soar throats. I notice even when I just drink apple cider, it helps a little.

When I had a sore throat as a kid, my mom would put either Ben Gay or Mentholatum on our necks and wrap one of my dad's nasty wool socks around it. We had to (or at least we tried to) sleep with that on. Not sure if it really worked, but it didn't kill us.

I do a smoothie every morning. In addition to the requisite fruit, juice and yogurt, I also add psyllium husk for regularity and heart health, and spinach, because it's just plain good for you.

Big fan of the Kitchen-Aid variable speed stick blender for the smoothie. Blends everything to a fine mist.

  10. For sore throats, or as a preventive measure (especially used by singers/performers) Slippery Elm is very good. Tastes awful, but a half teaspoon in a glass of liquid does the trick.

I also used it, or rather administered it to my first dog who had a very delicate digestive system. I was told that it coated her stomach.

Unless you have a digestive tract problem, I wouldn't make a habit of eating/drinking blended food. Chewing and digesting the food, rather than having it pre-digested by a blender, is an important part of healthy eating. Blending gives the food a higher glycemic index.

Considering that if I didn't have the smoothie, I'd leave the house with nothing but a latte in my stomach, I think I'm money ahead.

    Good point though.

My boyfriend who hates to take any sort of drugs taught me to drink scalding hot tea (as hot as you can stand it) for sore throat. It seems to burn away all the nasties in the throat. Do this as soon as you start feeling a scratchy throat.

For colds, flu, sore throat sorta things, I drink tea made from fresh ginger, fresh garlic, honey and hot pepper. I simmer the ginger for about an hour, add the garlic for another half hour, then add a little honey and either hot red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper. It's very good for the immune system and will clear your sinuses and throat out. The fresh ginger tea is good for stomach bugs but leave out the garlic and hot red pepper.

When I was a kid when we had sore throats or cough my mom would give us a mix of whiskey and honey. I'm not sure it helped but it was something they used to do in the logging camp when she was a kid and back then I think that's all over-the-counter cough medicine was. I liked it even if it didn't work!

Since they no longer allow cold or cough remedies for small children, my pediatrician suggests honey and lemon juice for sore throats. She also said it might be more effective than some of the drugs that used to be available.
