A few times when conversations around here have turned to beer, several east coasters have mentioned the yearning for a Yuengling...good news, they recently announced expansion plans which could vastly broaden their distribution. Check it out.

Wow, awesome news if it comes here.

You haven't lived until you have had one, Rudy, if it makes its way here your first one is on me.

Here is a profile in the WSJ. I have never tried this beer but everybody raves about it. (Not edog though)

    Poker...

Is there another beer you can compare it to, or is it a one of a kind?

feh, wake me up when we get something exciting like founder's or bell's out here. yuengling is no better than henry weinhards as far as i'm concerned. better than bud or millercoors by a lot, but still nothing compared to the staggeringly awesome quality of our local brewers.

I'm with Edog. It's not bad, but it's not something I miss that much. I think it's just a bit romanticized since people can't get it outside the area.

It was readily available in DC when I lived there. Sure I drank it and mixed it into what I normally drank from time to time, but was never hit by the wow factor others here have found.

I dunno, in my mind it is pretty unique. I think a lot of people from the Northeast love it because it is such a staple there.

It is kind of like Pizza. People from Chicago swear deep dish Chicago style is the best and people from NY swear thin crust pizza that you fold when you eat is the best.

I think we just love what we grew up on. I guess you could compare it to a Sam Adams, but you can drink way more and not feel weighed down.

Now I am off to clean my bathroom.

Usually my rules for beer are that it be brewed close to home, in smaller batches than most, and have very pure ingredients. My lone exception to that is Guinness, which is brewed in massive quantities far away, but is so pure, I can forgive it.

Thats a great comparison. Its similar to sam, but does not have that loaf of bread quality.

FWIW - Sam is a great beer, but I'm so spoiled by the local options here, that if its the best thing on tap at a restaurant or a bar, I get pretty darn cranky!

Guinness, owned by Diaego (the world's largest producer of booze), is pure in what way exactly?

My Yuengling was/is Leinenkugels. Back in the day before microbreweries it was the cats meow.I admit I was excited when I saw it appear in stores here. I buy a six pack now and then but it really doesn't do much for me. As has been repeated so eloquently by edog there are way better brews available locally. Especially in the lager style we have emerald city brewering dottie's seattle lager and old seattle lager to name a few.

Agree that we have been spoiled with our outstanding local brews...but every now and again, it's nice to grab a bottle of something decent (in comparison) for after/during yard/house work.

Another little disappointment in life... sigh. I read the label closer on Black Star Beer (Whitefish, Montana) recently. I always liked it since visiting there years ago; but come to find out it is produced in Milwaukee now. =(

Meh... It's alright. People in the northeast rave about it? Keep in mind these are the same people who go on and on about how wonderful Dunkin Donuts coffee is and it tastes AWFUL.

I agree with Gem. I'll get excited when Bell's or Founder's can be found out here. Or even better, Three Floyds, but that would be a virtual miracle.

This thread made my night! I'm with Pokerguy, it's one of those things that is almost a bit nostalgic. I remember when I had my first one on tap. Ahhhhh.... It's just something that's East Coast Americana.

I would say its similar to Sam Adams but more crisp and light. But that doesn't mean it skimps on the flavor.

hmm... I'll be back in NJ for Christmas. I'm seeing fresh pints on yuengling in my future! Thanks for the info Rudy!! If it does come out here I want in on the inaugural pint!

if you live in philly, yuenling is as good as it gets as far as beer goes. but it really doesn't hold up in this town, which has WAY better beers.

This post confirms my theory. In my world DD is the best, first place I go my first morning home every time. So much better than the overpriced, pretentious crap you get out here.

those buckeye donuts look pretty good!

any self-respecting donut shop should be open 24 hours like this one. or they should open at like 2 or 3am for the late night crowd (as a certain donut shop I recall in Mishawaka, IN).

Agree with Jules that Guinness is truly an amazing beverage. It also has less alcohol content than Harp, despite it's beautiful thickness.

PG - PUT THOSE FINGERS AWAY!

Harp is a great example of why local beer in smaller batches is always the best. If you take a Harp, and a Weinhards private reserve and do a blind taste test, I challenge you to find the difference. (maybe I only feel this way because my taste is insensitive to lager after all these big NW ales?) Lager is not much of a challenge, not nearly so interesting as stout. I mean, at the end of the day its cheap beer for football, and only gets character in smaller fresher batches! (not that I know if Weinhards is really smaller batch, its just a sign of how weak more expensive beers are) Good Stout is a different creature altogether, and from a culinary perspective is almost as fundamental as bread. Guinness has done a very good job of remaining true to what stout is, granted its their version of a stout, but they've never strayed.
