I am so sorry to hear the sad news about your beloved Zeus. My heart aches for you and your family.

It is so terrible to lose a pet, but I hope you can take comfort in the thought that he is now romping around Doggie Paradise with Winston. Even though he has gone on to a new journey, he will always be watching over you.

Take care, and I'll be thinking of you today.

I'm so very sorry, MsBallard. Pennygirl is right, Zeus will keep careful watch over you all now (and, BONUS, scary squirrels aren't allowed up in heaven).

Zootie LOVED squirrels!!! Although admittedly, I'm not sure he had any idea what to do with them in the event he'd ever captured one (unlike my other two predators).

Thank you all for your kind words and messages. As many of you had predicted, Zeus told us when it was time, so we cuddled last night and I told him that he could go. He died peacefully in his sleep early this morning, but before doing so he came over to where I had been sleeping and laid down next to me, which was a tremendous gift. Something woke me up not long after he passed ... and for reasons I won't go into, I'm so thankful to have found him then and been able to say goodbye, rather than finding him later when the alarm went off.

He was a gentle giant and unforgettable friend. We'll greatly miss him.

And a big thank you to my neighbors, who helped out when I needed them most this morning to do something I never could have done on my own.

And to the rest of you, my tremendous thanks for your care and compassion. I really appreciate it.

Good thing, then, because I was wrong! There are LOTS of squirrels up there.

I'm glad your neighbors were there for you. You just can't put a price on support like that.

So sorry to hear this. It sounds very peaceful. One of my cats was very old and got very weak. That last night I slept on the sofa with him on my chest - he was purring part of the time. About 3 am he gave two great sighs and died. As sad as it was, it made me understand what people mean when they say that death is a part of life. I hope I die with that much dignity. It sounds like Zeus went the same way.

Take comfort in having known him. And bless your neighbors.

You have been in my thoughts since I ran into you at the video store. A couple of us have been asking each other regularly if anyone had any news. The fact that he came over to sleep with you was so nice. Words can't adequately express feelings at this time, but I can tell you I understand and sympathize. I still miss my Aussie buddy every day. I hope the rest of the pack are doing OK. The loss does affect them too and behaviors can change for a few days after.

I am so glad I got to meet the gentle giant at the dogpark. Ms. Beaglebutt had a quality cuddle in his name.

Oh, I am so sorry. Nelly and I are sharing a cuddle in his memory. What a blessing it is to share your life with an animal friend, and what a sorrow when they leave.

I'm so very sorry, msballard30 :( I love that his final moments were spent snuggled up next to you. What a comfort that must have been for him. I'm also glad that he got to go to Picolino's one last time with you. RIP, Zeus...

Zeus sounds like a wonderful soul. And his leave taking seems peaceful. This is such a very real loss for you, and the rest of the pack in your home. With my sympathy and appreciation for your neighbors.

    msballard30:
I don't really even know what to say to you except I care & I know what you are feeling unfortunatley. I have not been on the forum for quite awhile due to a busy schedule and learning the ropes of my new job, but, stopped by tonight just to see how you & Zeus were doing. I must have felt that something happened since I last checked in on you. I am happy that he went peacefully and that he came to where you were sleeping, indeed brought tears to my eyes. PLEASE let me know if you want a hug or just a pal going forward through this yucky sad process. I am here for you and Bella would love to romp with your brood still sometime soon. Hang in there, I am sending happy, healing thoughts & vibes your way lady! :) xo

msballard30 - I am so sorry to hear of the passing of a beloved family member. Animals are just that, and too often people forget that. I know exactly what you must be going through, and vividly remember the heartbreak. Please know we are all thinking of you.

Msballard30, My heart goes out to you. The pup that is my avatar is coming up on 18. I am home with him now and he is sooooo old, yet happy. We couldnt have asked for a better companion all these years. From the sounds of all Zeus's friends above it sounds like he was at LEAST as good a friend to you. i hope your memories of him bring joy and laughter and warmth and comfort over the years.

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement and the outpouring of support. It's been a really tough week and we miss him ("Zootie Pickles") terribly. For now, we're focusing on Ruby (avatar) and the Fatty Monster and trying to give them lots of love and to help them through this period of adjustment (Nanuq wouldn't stop sniffing all the places Zeus had been on Monday, but doesn't seem as affected, whereas Ruby is pretty clearly depressed). For now, we just need to learn to live with the new family construct and start moving forward.

Big hugs to all of you from all of us.
