I live near corner of 97th and 7th NW, near the Split End Salon.

This afternoon around 2:40PM, a young African American male (medium height, jeans, dark jacket) came and rang our doorbell. We didn't get to the door right away and by the time we did, he was already on his way down the driveway. He left, but then came back a few minutes later and went to the side of the house opposite the door while talking on his cell phone. We yelled out the window and asked him what he wanted. We couldn't see him at first and it took him a few moments to answer. He then came into view of the window and asked if some guy lived here (can't remember name he used). We said no and he left.

Very suspicious since A) he came back and B) he didn't go to front door.

4-5 years ago, some kids tried to break into my house with same approach. First the doorbell and then trying to get into our backyard.

If you are in Crown Hill or Ballard, has anything like this happened to you recently?

I'm close by you (near 9th and 100th). Some body rang my bell at about 11 AM on Friday when I was home sick from work. He was walking away by when I got to the door, so I could not see his face, and he did not turn to ward me, just kept walking away. He did not return though.

This is why it is important to, at least, yell through the door - to let them know you are home. You don't need to answer the door - just channel a really unstable person and ask:

    "Wud ya want?"

If they want you to open the door respond by saying:

"Oh, I don't think ya want me to do that" followed by a guttural laugh.

    They will go away.

And... if you are really suspicious and feel there is something wrong:

    911 or (206) 625-5011

You dont even have to be really suspicious to call the Non-Emergency line (206) 625-5011.

Just call and tell the dispatcher that there is someone in the neighborhood that does not seem to belong here, ringing door bells or walking down driveways.

They will send two officers out right away as long as there are no priority calls. Even if they dont come right away eventually officers will do an area check.

Rule of thumb, if your gut feels like something is up go ahead and call. That person may or may not be up to anything but in the off chance they are, at the very least police will ID the person for SPD records in case something does happen later in the day they have a starting point.

There were some posts over on the Phinneywood forum about similiar incidents a few months ago. You were no doubt right to be concerned - it's probably still worth a call to the non-emergency line, in case they have other reports and can use your info to establish some kind of pattern?

Not the same person at all - but the same tactic happened to me about 2 years ago. Near the Ballard Community Center. Two white men came to the door. I was pregnant and tending to my toddler at the time, and really didn't feel like answering the door for two people I didn't know. I didn't think much of it until they started walking in to the backyard and walking around the perimeter of the house. Then I freaked and yelled at them through the window and they asked if so and so lived there. I said no...then they asked if they could pull weeds for $$ (It was bordering on dark and pouring down rain) and again I said no. Then called 911.
