Nice wolfden. Might as well ask, "what are the benefits of food?"

Fiber, a myriad of vitamins you can't get with meat (specifically vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E ... oh really there are a bunch), complex carbohydrates just to name a few. I personally feel weak if I don't eat meat so I'm all for eating balanced - lots of vegetables, some fruit, some whole grains (all of these have different types of carbohydrates which are important to keep your blood sugars level and give you energy) and some meat.

But probably the most important reason - cause your mother said so!

I suppose you could just eat meat and maybe some bread or whatever and see how it goes. But over time you'll develop a bunch of health problems and that will answer your question - but in an unpleasant possibly irreversisble way.

By the way, Wolfden - awesome bear! I love despair.com.

I'm a meat-eater myself, but I certainly don't feel "great and strong" when I eat meat. More like bloated and fat.

cesar5slater- I have to add to this even though I am now in the freezing cold UK and having a rotten time.
I have not eaten meat for 20 years plus and get all the vitamins I need from veggies. So the answer to your question is you get all the vitamins you need to live a healthy life fron vegetables.
You don't have to eat dead animals! And if you choose to eat them then treat them with respect and if you want to kill them do it with love.
Don't eat them if you can't bare to see them die.
And FYI I used to be a huter and have killed and dressed many animals but chose to stop eating them when I realized I could live a healthy life without supporting the murder of inocent creatures.

I have often wondered how many of America/the world's problems might be solved or lesened by requiring a license to eat meat. Obesity...probably. Heart disease...probably. Diabetes...probably. Spiraling healtchare costs in general...sure would help. Hunger...quite likely. Climate change...certainly would help. Dependence on foreign energy...sure. Energy depletion...likley. This is just the start. I am sure there are other problems related to eating lots of meat that would be lessened.

To get the license, each person would be required to kill the meat of their choice, i.e. stun and kill a cow to eat beef, and then watch the butchering process. Maybe also require a visit to a factory farm. License would be good for five years and then require renewal. I am pretty sure a large number of people would not be able to do it and would stop eating meat. To me it seems pretty hypocritical to eat meat if you are unable to face the reality of where it actually comes from and the costs associated with it.

They are so much more tasty when they are innocent.

Could I slaughter an animal. Nope, dont care to. But thankfully there are people in the world to do the work I dont want to. I also dont want to cut people open or work at a kindergarten.

I watched a number of documentaries on the big conglomerate factory farms and such. With all their slaughtery 'scare tactics', videos and what not. Just made me hungry.

We live in a world of convenience, over abundance and waste. I know that I do my part with how I live my life to try to lessen my impact on the earth. But I know what I like and that includes meat, innocent or not.

Now I know all about the "internet" and I certainly do not want to start a battle between the vegans, veggies, and rest of us. That is not my intent. 'Cause we all know what fighting on the internet is like.

Reba, I have no problem with people eating meat, I just feel this country and world would be a whole lot better if people ate a little less of it. It's not as important as some people think, dietwise, to eat meat. You can get all of the same nutrients from veggies. The negative impacts that overconsumption of meat has on this world can be greatly reduced if people just ate a little less meat, that's all.

Apple: I agree with you. I'd be the first person to apply for such a license. I don't think I have any business eating meat if I don't have the stomach for death.

I was a vegetarian for around 8 years. I had times when I ate pretty much an all carb diet and a few years where I focused very hard to get lots of protein and veggies. I was nearly vegan (didn't eat dairy, but didn't care if there was a little whey in my margarine). Now I eat meat and the more I eat, the better I feel. I just didn't feel good when I was a veggie. Everybody's body is different. Some folks run best without meat, but I require more protein than most people do apparently.

Cesar: Take a peek at the Eskimos to see what an all-meat no veggie diet looks like. I remember at one time it was pointed out that most of the Eskimos didn't die of heart disease despite a diet high in saturated fat and meat. The answer is that most of them died of kidney disease instead - too much protein in the diet is hard on the kidneys. If you live long enough, then it causes arterial sclerosis.

As all things, a balance is needed. Taking a multi-vitamin is good, but it's not quite the same as getting the same things from a natural source. Part of the reason for that is absorption. You may think you are taking a ton of calcium, but without magnesium, you're just going to eliminate most of it. This is true for many sorts of vitamins. Although Vitamin E isn't really one of them - it comes chiefly from animal products (like eggs) and the sun. Plus, I don't know about you, but I can never be faithful about taking my vitamins every single day ad infinitum.

Mr. Pyramid: Duke duke duke of prunes prunes prunes.

Actually it's a real person (I believe) who is trying to make a living by directing internet traffic. I tracked it a fair amount and then decided I didn't care anymore. It doesn't belong here though and please note it responds to certain threads and then is completely non-sequitor in others.

    Gah.

In other news though, Merry Christmas!
