Oh wait! Millions. Or maybe Die Hard. All kidding aside, if you haven't seen Millions, that's the one. Or, no. Love Actually. Yes, definitely Love Actually and Millions.

Oh, and "A Midnight Clear"
Posted 2 years ago # -
It's probably too late to add Mixed Nuts, huh?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Its not my fav but a top ten for sure, and its more of a holiday movie. Trading Places!

Hard choice. Do you go with Silent Night Deadly Night or Silent Night Bloody Night? On the other hand Jack Frost makes for a hard choice; the MST3K 1964 Russian version or the fantastic 1997 America movie of the same title? All must-watch films I assure you.

Jubbjubb - Humbug! I call your bluff, show us your real cards!

Holiday Inn

"Scrooge" - the 1970 Albert Finney musical. He defined Scrooge for me from childhood. Also the Rankin/Bass animated version of "Little Drummer Boy." It seems to be shown more rarely than Rudolph and the others, and maybe my memory is sketchy about it, but I remember liking it when I was a kid.

White Christmas (Sisters, sisters... is now playing in my head)
Rudolph (I love the Island of Misfit Toys)Posted 2 years ago # -
Elf.

I miss Amahl and The Night Visitors. That was a long time ago on a tiny black and white TV set.

I don't think I've ever seen White Christmas. Since it's so many people's favorite I'll have to check it out!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Muppets christmas Carol (light the lamp not the rat!) And Its a Wonderful life, plus the original version of Miracle on 34th Street.
Posted 2 years ago # -
As for a Christmas Carol, I agree with others who like the Alistair Sims version. Its getting harder to watch as the technical quality of the production is ageing poorly. For me, its Sims delivery that nails it. Each and every word is perfectly placed with just the right level of emotion and expression. After him, its as if all others a just reading a script.

Bad Santa. Best xmess movie ever.

I agree with ElizabethElaine. but not my favorite. Joyeux Noel was a wonderful movie though. So my favorites are:
1. It's a wonderful life.
2. Christmas Vacation.
3. Bad Santa.
4. Joyeux Noel
5. A Christmas Story.
6. Santa Claus the movie.
7. Peewees Xmas.
8. Germlins.
9. Charlie Brown Christmas.
10. Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.
11. Mr Magoo’s Christmas Carol.Posted 2 years ago # -
I almost forgot: The Family Stone! My mum and I watch it every Christmas eve to remind ourselves that our family isn't as strange as it could be.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Die Hard, A Christmas Carol (Mr. Magoo cartoon version, although they are all good), Trading Places, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Boris Karloff cartoon version). Not necessarily in that order.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I haven't posted for awhile, but I'm a sucker for Christmas movies. These are some of my favorites (in no order):
o It's a Wonderful Life
o A Christmas Story
o A Christmas Carol (Alistair Simms and George C. Scott versions)
o The Shop Around the Corner (I concur with you, jburgh!)
o Charlie Brown ChristmasAnd my very favorite Christmas/winter video of all time is Raymond Brigg's "The Snowman". The story and the music are beautiful beyond belief.

I knew I left a couple off my list. +1 Bad Santa and The Family Stone!
Also concur that the Alistair Sim version of A Christmas Carol is by far the best/creepiest/truest to the source material.

Lots of folks love A Christmas Story -- I saw the new musical version of it at the 5th Avenue Thursday. If you like musicals and loved the movie, you'll have a blast at the show. The cast does a great job (especially the dad, I thought, who actually seemed more 3-dimensional and human than in the film) and the set is really cool. The music unfortunately is pretty forgettable, but pleasant enough while you're watching. The second act feels a little rushed. But it got a standing ovation, I'm sure from folks who love, love, love the film version.
OTOH, my favorite Christmas movies are Miracle on 34th St and It's a Wonderful Life. The Santa Clause is pretty cute, too. Of the various TV specials by far the best is Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas, and of course Charlie Brown if only for the music.

It's a Wonderful Life +1

Elliott, is 'The Snowman' something which you rent, or buy? It sounds lovely
Posted 2 years ago # -
A Christmas Story. Only because as a kid, I could have been Ralphie's identical twin.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I too love Miracle on 34th Street, but as I married Maureen O'Hare, the story has lost some of its charm.

Malia: here's a link to this lovely movie: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubeVUnGQOlk.

Just finishing up Gingerdead Man. While not the best Christmas movie, perhaps Gary Busey's finest performance??? Sorry Lethal Weapon fans (hmmmmm, 2 Gary Busey Christmas movies), guess he's a holiday icon.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

I truly love "Bernard and the Genie." Alas, I only have it on videotape. As I no longer have a tape player, this is a problem. Also, the only DVDs of this movie are in some British format that cannot be played here, apparently. Sad. It can be seen on Youtube, though.
Not a Christmas movie, a Thanksgiving movie I love- Steve Martin & John Candy in "Trains, Planes & Automobiles."

Jules...
I agree that Bernard and the Genie is a riot :-)
You can get a Region 1 (US) DVD format at Amazon.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Christmas Vacation. It somehow always made me feel that my family was normal. Also, it will be fun to watch this year given the Randy Quaid real life stuff going on. Perhaps he was not acting at all in this film?
Love Actually is another fun one, but can't watch either this year - DVD player busted
Posted 2 years ago # -
I like to watch the volume of a bottle of nice Jameson go down. While I'm watching Gremlins.

Nora Bell, The Ref is awesome! I love that line, "your husband ain't dead, lady, he's hiding!" & "Slipper socks -- medium!"... LOL
so, like I said earlier White Christmas is my favorite Christmas movie... (actually, its my favorite movie of all time. Its just too good.)
I also love (& highly recommend, although it is not a movie) "Happy Holidays w/ Bing and Frank".... its an old TV special where Bing goes over to Frank's house on Christmas eve, and they drink and sing songs, Frank makes Bing dinner, and then SUDDENLY they are caroling in Charles Dicken's time period. Its so cheesy; its awesome. It is available on DVD. There's also a CD version of it called "Christmas Sing w/ Bing & Frank", featuring all the songs (& its one of my favorite Christmas CD's).

Holiday - both the Katherine Hepburn & Cary Grant movie and the Kate Winslet & Jack Black movie.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Holiday Inn, hands down. Closely followed by White Christmas, Christmas in Connecticut and Mixed Nuts. I watch Mixed Nuts throughout the year! :)
Posted 2 years ago # -
"Ernest Saves Christmas".
Just watched it the other night.A close second is "A Christmas Story" (You'll shoot your eye out!)
Then the 1940's version of "Miracle on 34th Street"

Heh. Yeah, Melissa, The Ref is the only one everyone wants to see at the family gathering. I love when Kevin Spacey smashes the tree ornaments with the fireplace poker and says 'Excuse me! The corpse still has the floor!'

Prancer. Best reindeer movie ever.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Bad Santa
Christmas Vacationand The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. I know its a sappy chick flick but the transformation of Winslet's character hits home.
