How do you solve a problem like Maria?

Planning to attend the sing-along?
If you are really seeking info, I try not to think of other people as problems to be solved, as hard as that might be with some. And the moonbeam thing sounds like some sort of trick science question. :)

With Maria you need to be kind but firm. Give support to good behavior and consistently don't stand for nonsense. Even if it seems funny don't giggle at bad behavior.
And moonbeams are surprisingly heavy. You'd think curls with free weights would help strengthen your grip on them, but really it all start with your core -- pilates with a Swiss ball is the way to go.

My my angeline, not fond of releasing the child within?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Maybe they chould subtitle this movie "how do you keep them down at the convent after they've seen Vienna". Always hated the snarky Baroness :)
Posted 2 years ago # -
I think it should be subtitled: "Damn Germans, they can't even leave a singing troupe alone" :-) :-) :-) <------Note the smilies :-)

Is this thread about Aunt Salad's cat?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Is Aunt Salad's cat named Maria?
Posted 2 years ago # -
I can neither confirm nor deny.

Um...think doe a deer a female deer - "the hills are alive with the...." Channel 4.. Long movie... Singing children...

Very carefully...

Hate to break it to you PG but using smilies to convey that you are not being serious is so 1999; people ignore the smilies now. Speaking of ze Germans,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru2uixqA7Fk (mature language present)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oK_trZhVdk (see above warning)As for Maria, you download the source and compile it yourself. Goddamned precompiled binaries...

Well, that makes sense, Wolfie...I'm always about 10+ years behind everyone else! But since you have alerted me to this fact, My New Year's Resolution (starting now) will be to lay off the smilies. I suppose you'll just have to guess as to whether I'm being serious or not...good luck with that!

Pennygirl,
Don't feel too bad. If your typed smilies are so 1999 can you imagine how faaaaaaar back my use of <grin> goes? Gads.
D
Posted 2 years ago # -
Maria would use smilies. :-)
Posted 2 years ago # -
dsomers...
I am crushed, truly.
Nora B...
That she would, but she's sooooooo 1940's.

Lemme rephrase: People ignore the smilies when it suits them. The tongue in cheek had some mileage until recently but imo that's on its way out as well. There were smilies and then those were replaced by gifs, then lolcatz made it to the scene. For a while there, there was calm as potentially provocative threads were tempered by kitty pics. Then giant ASCII pictures took their place. It's a losing war when and where the only certainty is that people have the potential to be d-bags.
/step off soapbox.

Streaker will not stop using smilies. Because Streaker does what Streaker wants. PG shouldn't either IMO.
:-) till ah die! :-)
Posted 2 years ago # -
Streaker!
<grin>till ah die!<grin>
<grin?>
Posted 2 years ago # -
No worries there Streaker. There's a little loophole in my original statement - 'New Year's Resolution', which, given my track record, equals two days max. I will be back channelling 1999 in no time.
Posted 2 years ago # -
dsomers! Good to "see" ya. <grin>
PG. Good to hear :-)
Streaker is going down to Portlandia for a couple days starting tomorrow, so by the time he gets back into Seattle maybe your retro self will have returned. Not that Streaker won't check in here while down south.Posted 2 years ago # -
Ah man... love this movie, makes me more damp- eyed every year I watch it...
Always thought Peter Sellers would have made a much better Herr Zeller, can just about hear him say "zee Anschlust isst cominggg..."Posted 2 years ago # -
Ooh...we're doing SOM quotes!
Captain von Trapp:
"If the Nazis take over Austria, I have no doubt, Herr Zeller, that you will be the entire trumpet section."

Ah, one of my favorite lines from SOM, dsomers. :-)
Posted 2 years ago # -
These are a few of my favourite things!
The cast of SOM is on Oprah tonight. Chirs and Julia and all seven who played the kids.
(Thought some of you might want to know)
I never would have survived Saturday house cleaning (as a kid) without singing along with the reel to reel recording.
Posted 2 years ago # -
SmartsyArtsy. I watched that Oprah episode earlier today ! A must see for SOM fans:o)
You will see glimpses of and hear the real Maria von Trapp also.
The line that made me LOL when I watched SOM on komo 4 last night was when the
Baroness said: "Somewhere out there is a lady who I think will never be a nun.
Auf Wiedersehen, darling."Posted 2 years ago # -
Just watched part of the Oprah episode. While I do not normally watch her show, I will for the Sound of Music. The film is great, but the book of the true story touched me more. It is a little more boring in some ways, but much grittier in others. The afterstory about their journey to the states and getting established was great in the book.

Just saw the last half of Oprah after reading this. Thanks for mentioning. Taking my 14-year-old and some friends to the sing-a-long on Saturday night. LOVE that movie.

Streaker is strangely reminded of certain happenings on the forum by this Maria quote :-)
"You know how Sister Berthe always makes me kiss the floor after we've had a disagreement? Well, lately I've taken to kissing the floor whenever I see her coming, just to save time."

Several of the Von Trapps still live in N. VT. One daughter still sings, as do the grandkids who were on Oprah tonight. Up in Stowe VT, the Trapp Family Lodge sits on beautiful grounds. I attended several outdoor music events there and liked to go to the tea house. Either Fredirich or Kurt married a woman who is very active in doing agility with her dogs, along with a good friend of mine.
ST: Well, you are certainly close to the floor.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Gah! I read this whole thread thinking "wow, similes are out of fashion? I never knew they were IN fashion."
Posted 2 years ago # -
SA. Streaker hopes you aren't still miffed with him. Just was not having a good day last week. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Posted 2 years ago # -
dsomers: Remember before there was /me back on chatboards?
<---- jumps up and down.
ST: Say hello to pdx and have a voodoo doughnut for me!
angeline: frequently they were necessary. I remember demonstrating to newbies (censored for politeness)
F you.
F you!
F you. :D
F. You.
F you. :/
F you. >:bAll of those sound differently and the smiley dramatically changes the meaning. Even the different emoticons change the tone.
But anyways, enough of showing my age. ;)
Posted 2 years ago # -
Phoo... Can't rightly go to pdx and fail to consume a doughnut from there. Streaker would totally bring you one back and get it to you if it could somehow still be fresh. Give a holler if you want one anyways and ah will see what ah can do :-)

I’ll never watch Sound of Music again without laughing out loud recalling how Dan Savage recommended the Lonely Goatherd as the best song to have sex to. No loss since I don’t think I have every actually had the stomach to watch the whole movie.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I've never seen this movie and have no desire to. I visited Salzburg a few years ago and people kept pointing out places from the film that just went over my head.
For some reason, I dislike almost all movies with singing.

For some reason, I dislike almost all movies with singing.
How about the following movie:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)Posted 2 years ago # -
racerX...
That movie actually makes sense if you are stoned. Or so I have read.
Posted 2 years ago # -
well that shouldn't be too hard!
I haven't seen that either, but certainly the music interests me more than "doe.."
will have to put it on my list.Posted 2 years ago # -
Embarassed to admit I saw that movie at the theater - in my defense it was 1978, disco was hot, and I was an innocent college girl madly in love with Barry Gibb ;o)
But then unlike GI, I adore musicals - to each their own.Posted 2 years ago # -
Tying into the subject nicely - what about Spinal Tap?
And I quote...
"Does for rock and roll what the Sound Of Music did for hills"
Posted 2 years ago # -
Crown I also enjoy musicals but this one leaves me cold for some reason.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Ugh! I saw Sgt. Pepper. You'd have to drag me to the theater in chains to get me to see it again.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I actually enjoy musicals, but only done live in a theater.
maybe it's just movies I hate.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yes Nora, wretchedly boring as were all Beatle films. Best the lads from Liverpool stick to pop music.
Posted 2 years ago # -
ST: No worries, just tell me which one you ate and that's good enough for me. :) It's just something I must do if I get to Portland. I miss that town.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Give them a bit of credit BR - they weren't actually 'in' the film!
Posted 2 years ago # -
A Hard Days Nigh: Awesome. Help: Bad storyline done in an entertaining way. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band: Sucked balz.
I think you may be onto something, PG!Posted 2 years ago # -
Phoo: I get smilies. I thought briefly we were talking similes.
But then my fears were washed away like a rainshower in springtime.
Posted 2 years ago # -
re Beatles' movies the Beatles weren't in. I really enjoyed Across the Universe. Anyone else?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Phoo... Its a deal :-)
Portland rush hour traffic seems like its worse than Seattle. Yowza.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Streaker...
Why don't you pick one (or two or three) up for Phoo right as you're leaving Portland? They'll still be good in 3+ hours!
Posted 2 years ago # -
RE SPLHGB movie: racerX really enjoyed Aerosmith's cover of "Come Together" - to each their own.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Streaker would if phoo wants PG. But she must ask :-)
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thank you for the sweet thought (heh), but I'd rather go to Portland and get voodoo doughnuts than get them delivered. Thanks again!
Posted 2 years ago # -
"...sweet thought." surely no pun intended :-)
But ok. If you change your mind the offer will still be standing.
