Many units responding. Heavy smoke and fire from a two story residence. Several medic units requested.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Dead hydrant at 9th and 65th. Using another hydrant.
Posted 2 years ago # -
City light being requested because of lines in front of the house.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Silver: There ahead of you this time. I heard all the engines, all turning their sirens off right about my street so got up and looked at realtime 911. I can see the smoke and glow from here. I wish there was something I could do for them, but every engine and its mother seems to be there. Best I can do is stay outta the way and maybe get a few more winks.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"We need water! We need water!"
Posted 2 years ago # -
Silver: from the size of the glow, I can only assume that house is gonna be a total loss. :/
Posted 2 years ago # -
I heard something about people on the roof.
Requesting additional companies to respond.
Still haven't heard that they have water to the fire.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"Five people were rescued off of the roof, two were believed trapped inside, one of those is believed to have been rescued."
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yeah, Phoo, this doesn't sound good at all.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I hate this being down the street and I can do nothing.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Engine 19, "Are we out of the building?"
"All units - withdraw from the building at this time! I want everybody at least on the street!"
"We are going defensive!"
Posted 2 years ago # -
"We are doing a roll call!"
"Engine 18 - all units accounted for!"
Posted 2 years ago # -
Did they find the last person? Please tell me they're pulling back because they found the last one.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Requesting a "211 alarm" - not sure what that is.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I don't know, Phoo.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Requesting numerous ambulances.
Posted 2 years ago # -
In that case, it's an even bigger fire than I thought. I thought it was closer to the south corner.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"All firefighters out of the building."
Dispatch: "Do you have all individuals needing rescue out of the building?"
"All civilians accounted for....Two ALS, six BLS" (Note from Silver - I don't know what that means."
Posted 2 years ago # -
"No exposure to other buildings."
Posted 2 years ago # -
Silver: there are a large amount of vehicles parked right on 64th around 9th. Perhaps they used the hydrant there.
Posted 2 years ago # -
BLS = Basic Life support
ALS = advanced life support"BLS is basic life support, stuff like minor illnesses, broken bones, nosebleeds, stuff that won’t kill you right away. ALS is advanced life support, heart attacks, trouble breathing, trauma, stuff that you need to get to the hospital pretty soon for."
Posted 2 years ago # -
I hear the ambulance coming.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"Gas is secured to the building."
I think this means that they have turned it off.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks, Phoo - I looked it up, too!
Still waiting for an ETA from City Light.
Posted 2 years ago # -
There is movement of at least one of the vehicles. It was on 11th, not sure if it was going to the backside of the fire or if it was just turning around.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I just edited a post above about the number of ALS and BLS patients - there were actually 8 patients total: 2 ALS and SIX BLS.
"Let's not put your rig under the power lines - let's back it up a bit."
Posted 2 years ago # -
My street is now smokey and I can hear them applying water to the house.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"Requesting a sanding truck from City Maintenance."
(I just remembered how cold it is out there - all this is going to freeze! Duh.)
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm hearing the first ambulances leaving the scene.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Ah, that means the one on 11th must've been going around to get the back. I can imagine if they were rescued off the roof, they are at least gonna be checked over and probably had a rough trip to get up there.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"Live fire is knocked down on A, B, C and D side. Still heavy smoke from both floors."
"Operations - we still have heavy fire on this side."
Posted 2 years ago # -
Silver: Funny, I saw a sanding truck like 15-20 or so ago, but it looked like it was milling about. Slowly cruising down 11th (away from fire)
Posted 2 years ago # -
"City Light was a ten minute ETA about five minutes ago."
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hey silver, on realtme 911 I am seeing air units being dispatched. Have you heard this?
Posted 2 years ago # -
WHOOPS, scratch that. Air260 means something else entirely.
"2 Mobile Air Compressors (AIR240 & AIR260)"Posted 2 years ago # -
Yeah, Phoo - they supply the firefighters with air.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I live on a street the fire trucks use to come back to the station on on 15th and Market. All the sirens woke me up and so far I have heard and seen 3 fire trucks returning to the station in the last 10 minutes. Does that mean the fire is under control? And, as stated many, many times thank you Silver for your posts!!! I always know I can count on you when I hear tons of sirens.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Additional companies are being staged.
It has been about 45 minutes since the initial dispatch went out on this fire.
Posted 2 years ago # -
You bet, johnnycat. I think they are rotating personal out so that they don't get fatigued.
Posted 2 years ago # -
There is still heavy fire on at least one side of the building.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Not as much radio traffic now, but still no sign of this fire being under control.
Posted 2 years ago # -
A metro bus has been requested to help with rehab. I think this is to help firefighters that have come off of the fire to keep warm. If any of you have more information, please share.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Metro bus is on it's way. They are being instructed to approach from 15th to 65th.
Posted 2 years ago # -
DOT sand truck has arrived. They are being requested to come in from the north and get as close as possible.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"We have fire under control."
Time since dispatch: one hour, one minute.
Posted 2 years ago # -
There is now a story on the front page of MyBallard.com with a photo of the burned out house.
What an awful night for those poor residents.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"This fire is in a smoldering condition. We aren't going to call it a tap fire for a couple of hours."
Posted 2 years ago # -
There is a big chopper hovering near 65th/11th and boy is it noisy. Emergency vehicles still present in some form.
Posted 2 years ago # -
that big old clunky chopper woke me up, not the emergency vehicles. Man, it is loud! I knew Silver would have the story.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I agree Alonzo Neighbor--sounds like the beginning of a M*A*S*H episode over and over...
it would seem that the SFD has issues with water at many of these scenes. either the pressure is inadequate or the hydrant is 'dead' as noted above.
maybe they should go around testing things periodically? I would hate for them to arrive at my house to fight a fire, only to find the hydrant is merely a lawn ornament with no connection to an actual water pipe.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hey "Great idea", they actually DO go around testing fire hydrants. ALL YEAR LONG! But when you figure how many hydrants compared to how few fireman, how many fire/aid/rescue/accident/power/snow/ice/etc. calls they get AND how a "dead" hydrant can have many causes, I'm sure the lawn ornament at your house is just fine. Glad to hear your concern for the 8 people rescued from this house too.
Posted 2 years ago # -
What was that noise?!
Apparently the biggest helicopter they could find. TV news wasn't giving any location (just 'Ballard'), though, or much real detail at all. So thank you, Silver and Phoo! Knew I'd find the scoop here. Glad everyone got out okay. Shame the house will be a total loss.
Posted 2 years ago # -
ronnyj--
I believe you that they test them "ALL YEAR ROUND"but do you know what this might amount to--
how often is each one actually checked?
every 3 years? 5 years? 10?hell, I'll go out and check my own hydrant if it makes things easier.
I am glad the eight people got out ok, especially the grandma on the roof.
Posted 2 years ago # -
About that helicopter - I watched all of the local news channels this morning to see if there was some kind of footage taken from the air and, surprise, nothing. There were news crews on the ground, telling us what we already knew from My Ballard! Good to hear everyone got out ok, but what a horrible way to end the year.
Posted 2 years ago # -
So glad to read here & all the news reports at the time of the huge balze, that everyone was out and safely to hospital.
To Alonzo Neighbor - There was helicopter coverage on KIRO7 news at the time of the fire. I too heard that thing hovering so low I thought they were landing on the scene!
At the time of the fire --- well in the major part of it, all news networks were covering it many times. I saw the "yellow jackets" (KING5) arrive before anything hit the air. I was reading all the posts here to find out what was happening.
As I was going back to bed about 6:30/7 something a.m. another fire truck was approaching with lights and sirens, I hope none of the firefighters were hurt. About 4 trucks had left up to that point - saw the metro bus arrive and the SDOT truck leave.
Woke at 9 something a.m. to sirens again, not sure going to the fire or leaving, but even now looking out that direction I can still see a considerable amount of smoke and NW 65th is taped off ad another fire truck arrived (no lights/sirens) about 20 mins ago - well that truck just left.
It was horrible in the dark I could see flames higher than the telephone lines out there many different times.
Once again, I'm so glad to know that no one has lost their life - hope the injured recover well.

greatidea: EVERY hydrant is tested EVERY year. The issue was that it was 23 degrees when they responded to this fire and the extreme temp affected that hydrant. My husband's helmet was coated in ice. The SFD did an outstanding job.
Posted 2 years ago # -
"Thank you!" to all of the personnel--firefighters, medics, ambulance drivers, metro bus driver and others--who worked to make this story and thread have a happy ending. May the eight people who escaped heal quickly and completely.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Silver - I consider you a neighborhood hero.
