Awesome. Great win...Italy is looking to hit their stride at the right time. Spain's quality was lacking against Portugal, Italy was superb today. Two recent World Cup Champions against each other in the final. Yes please.

Addressing something Eric mentioned before the England Italy match:
i can barely watch italy play, with the histrionics, weeping, etc. yes i know every team does this to some degree but italy has it finely tuned for sure.
As an insider I will admit in the past I did at times shout "knock it off" to the TV when the "gamesmanship" was on full display. However, I really haven't seen that from the Italians this tournament. Is that just me with my Azzurri-colored glasses? Or have those of you who watch the games noticed the same thing?
Posted 11 months ago # -
I've noticed the same thing Rudy. Actually, it seems like a lot of teams have dropped the drama.
Posted 11 months ago # -
As screwed up as American football is, I love how clean, rare, and honest the drama is. Well some guys get out of hand with touchdown dances, and partys after big hits, but overall I think the explicit brutality provides a healthy outlet for emotional release that keeps things to a minimum.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Translation of that last sentence please Sir :-)
Posted 11 months ago # -
I mean, the intensity of raw, legal, and explicit contact of football is a pressure valve and releases energy that would otherwise build up and lead to the kind theater that IMHO is only found in football.
Does that clear things up for you?
Posted 11 months ago # -
That's a Thursday sentence if I ever saw one :-)
Posted 11 months ago # -
rudy, i agree with you - the england match was the 1st i'd seen of them in a while and they looked very strong and played admirably. i even thought, "hmm. this isn't the whiney diving squad i remembered...". i readily admit this! (and conrats btw, i'm sure you are beaming)
PG was quite accurate in her prediction! nice work.
i bet a lot of people lost a lot of money betting this one!
Posted 11 months ago # -
Why thank you eric :-)
Posted 11 months ago # -
I feel this thread is due for another post but am not sure what to say.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Do a Thursday post - mention how pissed off you are that Germany didn't dismantle Italy. That would work.
Posted 11 months ago # -
I'm not pissed off though. I thought they would win but was not vested in it.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Well then talk about Landycakes. That will get everyone going.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Penny, you are great for working "Landycakes" into this thread.
Not many people had Germany losing for sure. This may have between the last hurrah for this group.
Posted 11 months ago # -
My pleasure Rudy. Nothing like a good Landycakes mention :-)
Posted 11 months ago # -
I am officially done with "footy". Pansy sport. It takes a REAL athlete to play Paddleboard Soccer. Wont see flops here
Posted 11 months ago # -
Ok Italia. Time to wrap this up.
Posted 11 months ago # -
I plan to sit with the little one and watch the match with her. She is asking who to root for since we are both new to it. I have been getting into it the last few weeks.
Posted 11 months ago # -
tell her to root for Uruguay.
they're the best.Posted 11 months ago # -
I think she's an Italia supporter BH.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Hmm. Not quite going to plan so far.
Posted 11 months ago # -
This is not how I drew it up. Spain looks unstoppable today.
Posted 11 months ago # -
tough so far for italy.
ok, why does the lead announcer pronounce "barcalona" as "barcaloner"? this is troubling me.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Wasn't expecting that. Next up Brasil 2014.
Posted 11 months ago # -
PG
Sorry she chose Spain when the match started and was in awe with the header for the 1st goal. The bloke from Italy didn't look to happy afterwards.
I will be signing her up for soccer soon and we had a great time watching.
CheersPosted 11 months ago # -
Tough loss, Rudy. Maybe your guys can round into Championship form for 2014. I mean, it would not take much.
Posted 11 months ago # -
"ok, why does the lead announcer pronounce 'barcalona' as 'barcaloner'? this is troubling me."
I have no idear eric. maybe one of these Warshingtonian British ex-pats can shed some light on this. I know President Obamer would not approve.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Nope. Can't help you out. He sounded normal to me.
Posted 11 months ago # -
Nothing you can do there...Spain was outstanding. Nothing was going to go the Italians way. On to the next!
Posted 11 months ago # -
That's the spirit Rudy!
Posted 11 months ago # -
video replay finally!
no more debacles like that England/Ukraine game! (or Germany/England game for that matter).

ZA-KU-ANI....!!!!
Never seen so many adults get teary eyed at one time. Myself included. That was just awesome to witness
Posted 11 months ago # -
That was special. Zakuani is pure class.

Sounders still tied 0-0 at the half. haven't scored against Real Salt Lake in 4.5 games. the last four games pitting these teams have been 0-0.
should be a good second half, especially if someone scores.

anyone see that guy with the bloody head? what happened?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Prolly got hit in the head... Duh.
Posted 7 months ago # -
yeah, but how?
pinched maybe??
looked pretty innocuous in the replay. then suddenly he was bleeding like a pig all over his face.I thought it might be fake like an old WWF wrestler with packets of ketchup up his sleeve.

This is why I just can't get into "football".
Posted 7 months ago # -
Probably a good idea Ernie. The thrill of the game is when it is deadlocked at 0-0 at 89 minutes and you pray for a goal. Low scoring matches are better in "football"
Love the quotation marks by the way. Were you trying to make a point?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Just making the point that if I called it soccer, which is what it's called here in the US, pennygirl would be along to call me an ass in short order.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Wouldn't have done that at all Ernie. I would have probably asked why you were bothering to post in this thread. If you visited here before I must have missed it.
Posted 7 months ago # -
I must admit it was worth the wait.
when you haven't scored against a team in that long, it's like a slow build-up and and amazing climax when it finally happens.
Posted 7 months ago # -
I doubt I have posted here, but with 700+ posts it's hard to know for sure.
Anyway, carry on, I'll pray for a Sounders goal!
Posted 7 months ago # -
Damn! I've never had a prayer answered so quickly! Might be something to this footie thing after all.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Told you!
Posted 7 months ago # -
Super Mario showed us why we got him! Just a great goal and while it wasn't a pretty game (wind will do that), it could not have been a better result. Bring on the Gals!
Posted 7 months ago # -
I know I'm late to the game...but I'm still in awe of that goal. Anyone else would have taken another touch there but Super Mario didn't hesitate and what a reward! I hope they can come out of LA tonight in a good position for next Sunday. It's going to be a fun week.
Posted 7 months ago # -
huge moment for the Sounders tonight!
insane goal for the win at Salt Lake...
was very sad to see Salazar ref the DC-HOU match. i really really hope the Sounders can avoid this guy.
Posted 7 months ago # -
not a good moment for the Sounders!
ugh! 3 -nil.
Posted 7 months ago # -
What a goal by Ibra today! Gotta be up for GOTY hands down. Just sick. If you didn't see it, go watch it now on youtube. Hart punches the ball as Ibra is challenging. Ibra chases it to the 35 yard mark or so, turns on the ball, and does a bicycle that goes up high and drops into goal.

Pele
Posted 7 months ago # -
SEdholm...there are few players who would even ATTEMPT that let alone score off of it. Unreal.
Posted 7 months ago # -
that was quite a goal!
if you look at the close-up, it appears the goalie headed the ball instead of punching it away (which I would guess kept the ball a bit closer than he wanted):

Yeah I didn't see until I saw it off my phone that it was a header, but it was insane just to try it, but to land it and being your 4th of the day??? Wow.
Posted 7 months ago # -
I took another look and the keeper was outside the penalty area, so had no choice.
I'll bet Brad Evans would've tried it! (doubtful w/ the same result)
they're saying it's the best goal of all time in some circles..
Posted 7 months ago # -
Is this a big deal, or is this guy past it?
Posted 5 months ago # -
Yup, replace one aging euro star with another. I gotta hope we do something big. We have been poking around La Liga quite a bit apparently.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Frank Lampard isn't past it.
