Many of you on here have read of my fondness (addiction) to Diet Coke - how I tried to go to one a day and couldn't do it, and later how I couldn't switch to carbonated water. So the doc put me on a new med this week, said it had a low side effect profile, shouldn't have any problems with it. Tuesday, keep opening Diet Cokes and not finishing them, didn't taste right, must be a bad batch. Wednesday, Thursday, opened a couple, didn't drink them, figured I'd come down with something that was throwing my taste off. Friday I take a big swig of icy cold Diet Coke and gag it tastes so bad. So, the light dawning, I googled the name of the medication and the words "side effects" "10-15% of patients will experience that carbonated beverages taste bad." "Carbonated Beverages taste bad" What the h*ll kind of side effect is that? On the good side, I have made it through caffeine withdrawal.

That is a strange side effect. But, there are certainly worse ones.

Should I dump some Coke stock? ;-)

Hmmm....maybe I don't know all the problems associated with this, but being addicted to Diet Coke doesn't seem that dire!?!?!

That stuff is the devil. At least with other non illegal crutches, you aren't dependent every minute you are awake, your heart rate doesn't go through the roof, and you don't run the risk of losing all your teeth. Sugary (whether real sugar or not) drinks are bad.

Without my Diet Coke this week I fell asleep at two (Yes TWO) early morning meetings - and it was noticed at least once!

Arghhh! You are an official addict! But I bet you don't get as much crap as people who are addicted to 'other' stuff :-)

  8. wow Cate, I assume the only reason it was prescribed was to get you off the aspartame poison :)

Would it have the same effect on carbonated water? Is this why you didn't want any the other night?

Would you tell the name of the medication?

  9. Aspartame is poison. Behold....

What helped me kick it was switching to iced tea.

I can drink Diet Coke until the cows come home, morning, noon and night and it doesn't do a thing to me - it doesn't perk me up, doesn't keep me awake at night, no rushes, no elevated heart rate, no headaches or "cravings" if I don't have any. It's just damn yummy!

How about beer? Does beer automatically taste bad now?
The side effect is funny enough to be a great practical joke on any soda afficionados, if it weren't illegal I'm sure.

I used to be a regular drinker of diet coke...finally just stopped drinking it one day and I think in that first week I lost 10 pounds. Bloat central, not to mention other undesirable side effects. Every now and again I've succumbed to the evil ways of aspartame. Last Friday I drank a diet coke and suddenly I was as puffed up as puffed up could be...even my underpants were tight (not to get graphic or anything). Sheesh...who knew?

I, too, love my Diet Coke. But I have cut back drastically from last year. Not a real conscious effort. Just gradually happened. Last summer I found I'd had like six while at work and then got one on the way home. Now it's maybe one a day. I tried last year to go off it cold turkey but I missed it. Glad I don't puff out like you do Nora Charles. I drink the caffeine free kind when I can. Summer time I love my Arnold Palmer's -sugar free version. Now that I could drink buckets of, if I ddin't watch myself.
